So Who ARE You, Anyway?

03/03/2011 5:23 PM

A while back I posted a thread explaining my avatar, and asking about other people's avatar choices. Heres a link: Avatardiscussion

Now that the forum rules on guests and multiple identities have changed, I think that the first job in rebuilding our community might be facilitated by reacquainting ourself with the personas and personalities that remain.

I'm Milo.

I put my location down as "dancing over the abyss," because I take an existential joy approach to my life. I am from Ohio,USA, but travel extensively so "where" doesn't best describe me very well.

I started in the steel mills in the labor gangs. Put myself through college, and stayed in the mills after I learned that starting pay for newly minted chemistry graduates is a small fraction of steel worker wages.

I worked as environmental engineer, lab foreman, plant metallurgist, and quality director before becoming a plant manager then heading up quality and development for an entire division (half of the company!) I've been involved with shutdowns, startups, bankruptcies and everything in between.

I've written hundreds of articles, thousands of posts here on CR4 (knowledge retention is Why) and after learning this online stuff here, created my own blog for my trade association- speaking of precision- which is mirrored here on CR4 in the Manufacturing Section.

The first thing that I consider whenever I post either a response or a topic, is that what I post "in the first place does no harm."

So i can be a bit "Fascist" if someone starts talking about dangerous practices. Or giving advice that they clearly know nothing about.

I'm into "Sensemaking."

I post to assure knowledge retention and to make things better for people who might need to know what I know.

So.

Who are you?

Why are you here?

Tell us why you picked the avatar that you did.

And what is the thing in your heart that is the basis for what YOU share?

Hey guys. I wasn't looking to start a sub thread. There seems to be enough interest in the nature pictures, that I started another thread here.

Is it roll call time yet? So far we haven't heard from Abdel Halim Galala, English Rose, JohnDG, Moronic Bumble, PW Slack, PennPiper, JRaef, msamad, Winfield Hill, netmaker, and a host of others....

If the building burns down, I hope these unaccounted-for folks escape. I would don a gas mask and chem suit to go in and get these guys out....

Ohh! not yet the time for roll call.

This post made me to think... who am I? why I selected this avatar? Not yet sure about anything.

Engineer... is it my identity? Or son, father, husband as some one says is my identity?

May be I selected my Avatar because, I think, we are like flowers... give fragrance for some time and we are going to bloom away!

Who are you?

Not an Engineer by any definition, Age 39 year, Entrepreneur, Never went to any college, Schooled in sub Himalayan town, Joined motor manufacturing industry at the age of 19, progressed and virtually worked in all area includes managing, My primary job was product development and prototyping, Beside that worked in the development of plastic and metal tooling, Establishment of quality system, establishment of statistical process control, etc, Left the job at the age of 33 to do something of own, and since then I am sucked with it, Little but our products are being exported, And that keep me happy all days,

Why are you here?

I believe CR4 contributes lot in my/our life specially when it comes to improving subject knowledge, upgrading online behavior, Knowing cultures, improving English, and sometime little bit of sense of humor, I wish to have little more tolerance toward new members and I am trying too hard for it, But at the same time being little bit of blunt with too poor poster is not only good for that poster but also for forum,

Tell us why you picked the avatar that you did?

That's what my wife told me to do so,

And what is the thing in your heart that is the basis for what YOU share?

Re: So Who ARE You, Anyway?

Who am I?

I am a 53 year old audio/broadcast engineer. I have spent most of my working life as a broadcast engineer designing and building studios and studio equipment. I have also installed AV systems in churches and cathedrals and regularly mix the sound for services and special events.I started with 6 years as assistant to the world's foremost mixer designer.

I had an interlude as a test engineer in a Westinghouse company building traction and power supplies for the railways, navy and power stations. This was an interesting change from the low power and low voltage world of audio.

I spent nearly 25 years in an international broadcast agency mostly working in the developing world travelling and building a variety of studios and facilities mostly in the developing world. In 2009 I was laid off in a restructuring set up my own company.

I am now building portable broadcast equipment for disaster response agencies and community radio.

Hobbies include a great interest in railways, a hope of building a model railway one day and possibly manufacturing a range of electronics for this market, photography, reading and archery (at a very inexpert level).

Why are you here?

I am fascinated by a wide range of subjects so I can broaden my knowledge and occasionally contribute in my own areas of expertise. I am always looking for inspiration from other fields and technologies that can cross-fertilise what I do.

Tell us why you picked the avatar that you did.

I haven't yet picked an avatar but I picked my CR4 name because I enjoyed the nonsense poems of Edward Lear especially the "The Dong with the Luminous Nose". Thought this might cause a few problems with spam filters so settled for something a bit more Boring.

And what is the thing in your heart that is the basis for what YOU share?

A fascination with technology, science and history, a deep concern for the developing world and my underlying christian faith (even if that is off-limits for CR4).

Re: So Who ARE You, Anyway?

03/07/2011 1:00 PM

Me? I'm a paper pusher in the international freight moving business. More precisely I'm a customs broker in Canada for over 30 yrs now. What is that you ask? It involves a bit of law (over 600 pieces of legislation touch on importing and exporting regulations), it is a bit of banking (many different ways to establish the value of goods being imported) and it is a bit of everything else. Sitting on my desk is the TARIFF book. 18,000 different tariff items and everything in the world has 1 and only 1 correct tariff, from live animals to nuclear reactors, from carrot seeds to N-L-alpha-Aspartyl-L-phenylalanine methyl ester, everything is in this book and my job is to apply the correct tariff number of my client gets a fine. Becoming an expert in classification now means I don't have to spend my time moving the same old stuff every day I get the fun job of researching new and different products to determine classification or writing legal arguments about why the number I used is correct and not the one the customs officer says it is. I get paid to learn stuff.

Before all this I studied some physics in college, some biology, played rugby but majored in poker and beer. That would be my main regret I would have to say. I'm incredibly curious and a voracious reader when I can get the time. Currently however a lot of my time is spend trying to save my recently purchased condo from destruction by the other owners who are a tad uneducated (polite term) in the matters of home ownership and maintenance.

My wife and I try to make time though for our major hobby of being hobbits (or dwarves or elves) in Middle Earth via Lord of the Rings Online computer game.

Why am I here? I often need help understanding the technical terms used in the tariff. I can't remember exactly what question I was researching when I discovered CR4 but I do know I immediately registered and bookmarked the site. You folks have all been a huge help. I also enjoy all the general chatter and the wide variety of topics that are covered here. This fourm is populated by a much more intelligent and logical bunch than most.

I also hang out here as I have always been in awe and envious of people who can actually build stuff that works. My wife who tends to "wing it" with the home improvement projects will never let me forget the first wall I built in our fixer-upper house back in Quebec. I drew out the plans, measured meticulously and bought all the materials. How the h**l was I supposed to know that a 2x4 was neither 2" nor 4"? Sure my father in-law was a professional carpenter and had taught a lot of his skills to my wife but my dad was a banker. Why call it a 2x4 if it ain't either. As I said she is still laughing. I've learned a lot since then but still will never call myself "handy". So I have tremendous respect for people who can actually do stuff.

There is also a great deal of humour hear that helps break up the day.

My Avatar? I like cats, have 3 (Gandalf, Frodo, and Aragorn, Pippen passed away) and it was cute. I didn't put much thought into it. My name Apothicus has been my online moniker for years and if googled will send you to several on-line game references and other posts made by me on various sites. It seems that someone else has picked it up recently so it is no longer uniquely mine. I actually held a trademark on it for a couple of years when it was my own company's name.

What do I share here? I say very little on the technical threads but have quite a bit to say on the more political or general threads. I was 13 when Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon, I remember it well. I though then that mankind was finally climbing out of a deep pit of ignorance and was setting forth on a glorious new beginning. 13 year olds can be pretty stupid! I firmly believe that if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem so I do what I can to try and get discussions going on us all moving forward again. I always enjoy a good debate and I hope I may from time to time give someone else something to ponder. I also recognise the need to constantly test my own ideas against those of others. Without that reexamining and testing of opinions there is no foundation for the opinion at all.

All in all I find this site a constant source of information, education, humour and discussion. What more could you ask for from the internet?

Who are you? I am a husband, father, and son as well as a mechanical engineer. The first and last ones are the only ones I had to work hard to become and all of them I work hard to become better at. I have been in the flight simulation field since 1984. Along the way I spent a few years designing medical equipment.

Why are you here? To learn and become better informed, to share/educate others, and to communicate.

Tell us why you picked the avatar that you did. I am a fan of the British Sci-fi show "Dr. Who". Perhaps you've heard of it. If not, the picture is that of the vehicle of choice of the Doctor (the main character of the show) called a TARDIS. The Doctor is a Time Lord and uses the TARDIS to travel in space and time. TARDIS stands for Time And Relative Dimensions In Space.

And what is the thing in your heart that is the basis for what YOU share? I am not sure if I know. Perhaps the essence of my collective experiences.

Re: So Who ARE You, Anyway?

I graduated with an associate in electronics in 1969... one term short of a second associate in electromechanical engineering... ("Computer Science" did not yet exist) and a year short of my Bachelors. After graduation, I moved to Silicon Valley. I married a gal from hign shool but in 1985 she wanted out. In Silicon Valley, divorce is considered to be an occupational disease. After the breakup, I came back to the Northwest. I wrote Engineering software for some time, but it is hard to market without a big budget. I should mention that Amateur Radio is a hobby (NW7L). I got interested in radio direction finding, so I got started developing antennas to do just that. Since then I have expanded the antenna family to various types working from 120 MHz up to 500 MHz. 13 years ago I met Shawna (who is also a Ham) and also is divorced. Somehow marriage (at 64) does not have the importance it did when I was 25.

Why am I here? Two primary reasons. I have learned more, in more disciplines, here than I ever would have investigated on the outside. Also on rare occasions I can help answer questions for other people. I must confess though that I usually let CR4 simmer 24 hours befrore opening it.

My avatar? It happens to be one of my toys. It is an extremely wide bandwidth yagi which operates from 420 MHz to 450 MHz. This thread inspired me to finally select one after five years.

The basis? Back at my first job, I became good friends with the production manager. He was a very down to earth guy who was always ready to help me with whatever problems I had, job related or not. In fact it got to be down right embarrasing because I knew I could never pay him back. So I decided I would pay him back by helping other people in the same way.

I've chosen this avatar for 3 reasons:

1) It was one of the existing avatars offered by CR4 and I was too bored to find a new, personal one on my own.

2) I liked that.

3) It looks like a work of Art. And it expresses me because -beside the Science- my other love is the Art.

Crow- Its been my name since I was six. Had the picture a long time -don't remember exactly where it came from.

Mechanical engineer from Lake Superior State College, with a specialty in metals technology. It closed and is now LSSU.

Got drafted right out of college in 68. I have never worked as a mechanical engineer. That is now my hobby out of the garage.

After the service worked at Sandia national labs as a photo-lithography engineer- don't know how I got the job. I applied for a different job. Moved to Signetics after a few years and a couple of years later moved to Intel. retired from Intel in 2001 and now teach electronics/vacuum/plasma part time at a community college and help keep all the equipment running in all departments.

Why am I here? to share what little I know of course. I have no interest in getting good answers. That would require getting up early and trying to among the first to answer. I have learned a lot by reading the posts of many of you. Thank You.

Interesting experience. I have a question. With your experience in vacuum technology and having worked at Intel....do you think that science can be pushed much further to get smaller. Or will a new approach needed to go to say, nanotech, graphene, etc?

The industry will get a lot smaller. There are several technologies available to do this this and probably several ways will work. I think the slower e-beam technology has already proven itself. Optical transistors are a good probability for CPU chips. Because of the waste products produced in making some of the carbon nano devices I don't see that as being in the near future for chips. That will probably come first in other related technologies.

The semiconductor industry has been in the nano range for years already.

I am watching to see who comes out with the first commercial solar cells using the wave principle of light versus the photon principle. We now are able to create wide band antennas small enough for the low end frequencies of visible light. This will jump solar cell efficiency by quite a bit.

I thought that Livermore Labs was in California.? Sandia is in Albuquerque, New Mexico on the airforce base. I was not there long. The rules for civilians getting on and off base were tedious on a good day and you slept in your car on a bad day.

Yup!! but right across the street from Lawrence Livermore is a branch of Sandia... or at least was back in the '70s. When I was down there a year ago, they had blocked off the road between the two establishments so they might have combined the two... who knows.

Who are you?

This is an interesting question because many times we confuse what we DO with who we ARE. I teach a class at church for Junior High Boys and I've asked them what they want to BE as they grow up. I used to get the usual response of "engineer, pilot, farm, etc., until I helped clarify to them that those are things you DO, not who we ARE. What we DO is not nearly as important as what we ARE, people of integrity, honesty, honor, trustworthiness, principled, hungry students in life. How hard we work at what we ARE will ultimately be reflected in how well we perform at what we DO.

I am a husband of 35 years, the dad of 3 adopted kids, not hardly kids anymore, graduated in 1976 from Central High School in Omaha, Ne., like to hunt deer, play sports (but haven't done too much of either of those lately, due to time priority changes), have a couple of home based businesses (Christmas Tree Farm, fruit distribution community), active church member, member of TEAM (Leadership Development), carpenter for 30 years, facilitiy manager, avid student of influential leaders in history.

Why are you here?

I am here to have significant impact in the lives of the people I meet. I want to help impact our society. We have a huge obligation to leave our country better than we found it. We do that by influencing our families first of all, then business, church, work and communities, with principles on which our country was founded (free enterprise, capitalism, hard work, personal accountability, responsibility).

Tell us why you picked the avatar that you did.

My avatar is people honoring the flag of this great country of ours. I value it highly and like a number of our previous Presidents, see the United States of America as having a destiny that can better the world. The world has benefitted greatly because of who and what we have been in the past. We aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but we have had very significant impact in the world for our short time since being established and can once again lead well as we remember and follow those principles that made us great.

And what is the thing in your heart that is the basis for what YOU share?

I enjoy learning, growing and encouraging others to develope a hunger to learn and never be content to stay where they are. Others are depending on them, and those people will either suffer or benefit because of who we ARE.

A little addendum to my WHO ARE YOU response.

I am here at CR4 to learn. John Maxwell says "if you want the right information, you have to ask the right questions." The mechanical side of operations is not my forte/aptitude/strong point, so I need to get better in that area. I've got some great guys who are good in that area and they take great care of all the HVAC systems, but I need become more capable too.

There is much experience and knowledge available here and I appreciate everyone's willingness to share that with others.

I also enjoy the discussions that get into the philosophical side of government, economics and why people do what they do. For the most part this communication of ideas takes place in a congenial manner eventhough opinions vary greatly.

Re: So Who ARE You, Anyway?

I am amused that a couple of people had to add their two cents worth even though I tagged it with the standard 5 points off topic.

I posted it out of frustration, I saw people trying to separate "Who I am" from, "What I am" in ways that seem illogical to me. "Who I am" is an identifier, name rank and serial number; "married man, father of three" seems to me to be part of, "what I am".

Who I am, passingtongreen, contains a typo, I typed it late at night with the light off. It was supposed to be paddingtongreen but I missed the slip up.

I am a widowed structural engineer, father of three beautiful daughters and four beautiful grandchildren with two more on the way. I was born in London, in the Borough of Paddington in 1935, bombed buildings were my playground. my pleasure, when I walked my dog was picking up shrapnel from the previous night's raid. When I was thirteen, I suddenly gained a deep insight and love for algebra and from then on was near the top of the class in math.

There was a need for oil refineries all over Europe. Although American companies had all of the expertise, they could not be payed in dollars because nobody had any; any dollars were bought by the various governments so that they could pay back war loans. The answer was that they bought small English companies and sent over enough people to lead the British engineers and designers who were paid in the local currency. I started as a clerk, attended Westminster Technical College one day a week to earn my Ordinary National (perhaps we should have a thread explaining this path that existed before they built many more universities). I did my two for the Queen and in 1966, took a nine month contract here in Philadelphia that included a green card. One thing led to another, I met and married an English girl. We bought a house, had our daughters and, one day, realized we were here to stay so we applied for citizenship.

The company I worked for pushed me up the ladder to the point that I needed a license or be downgraded with a drop in pay.I documented fourteen years of experience, took the PE on the Friday and the EIT on the Saturday, and passed. EIT was scary, computer science and math models didn't exist when I went to school and I never touched the black arts of thermodynamics, against that, statics was a breeze.

I have been retired since my wife died in 2002. One day I wanted to know if a meniscus changed its name when it turned from concave to convex, as when you continue to pour a little more water into a glass after it is full. The web search led me here to CR4. I have taken the web test for Myers Briggs personality types several times and it comes out to INTJ, a rational thinker. I stayed because there are more rational thinkers here than any other site that I know.

The "heart" question is not one for a rational response.

I'll read the balance of your post later, but in the meantime:

"I am the Walrus"

  • Ignore
  • Decide "it's a good answer"
  • Decide that the statement is Off Topic
  • Decide that the statement is On Topic (but we didn't know you were a walrus, so we're undecided about the "GA" or the "OT")
  • Any/all of the above.
  • (you can make them up as well as any of us)

What would you have done?

BTW - In case you hadn't gathered - I was one of the members who added an OT mark.

Hi Everyone

This is Ruby.It is the first time for me to introduce myself in English.I'm not very good at English. But after read all of your comments.I want to have a try.

I'm Chinese girl who graduated from one foreign language university last year.I major in Japanese when I study in school.I like smile and singing.Everyone like to chat with me because i'm always happy. So my friend like me and would like to play with me.They said Ruby is a very nice girl.I think the life is short,so we must try to be happy everyday.

Now i had graduated from school, and start to work as a sales manager in Panther Digital Tech.Co.Ltd.Everyday,i try my best to find customer and keep learning English.I want to make more foreign friend and hope can learn more from all of you.

Why i came here?Very thanks for Doorman. He introduce me to come to this thread.I read all of the comments here. After read,I felt calm down. There are many "Teachers" here.I feel happy and luck at the same time.I found that some of your had retired.I'm inexperienced and young.I just want to read your writing and learn from you.As you said, you come here to learn and teach. But Ruby have no right to teach. But i believe one day,I can teach the younger too. What is experience? It is Timing+pain!I will pain more, cause no pain no gain.

The first time i choose my own picture as avatars. So this is inexperience for me.So i change it into my company's products. www.clcctv.com

Have a good day!

Welcome Ruby, it's good to have you here.

I wish I'd seen your avatar before you changed it, I like to see what people look like. Several people have their own image as their avatar or something that reflects their interests.
