Ripped-Off By Retailers

12/26/2012 2:41 PM

Rant of the day: More and more we are noticing that manufacturers/marketers are scamming us in stores. A product that you have been buying previously may still be the same price but there's less in it now. The manufacturers hope you won't notice the subtle changes in container shape or size - they take us for fools. My wife recently bought some very expensive face cream. On opening the fancy cardboard container, she found that it was mainly empty space - the actual product occupied less than 20% of the available volume. It was designed to deceive. She got a refund. Won't buy that again. An ice cream carton with a fake bottom that is indented about 1 inch. A recent purchase of Arm & Hammer laundry detergent says "Bonus - 50 loads instead of 44." On pouring it out, it was obviously of much lower viscosity than previously - merely diluted with water, I would say. "Farmhouse Bacon" with a narrow slot down the packet showing only the meat. When you unwrap it, you find it's about 80% fat. The packaging is deliberately designed to deceive. Northland Cranberry Juice - colorful pictures of cranberries all over the label. No other fruit shown. When you pour it out, it's pale brown. Read the small print - it's made from pear and apple juice with added cranberries. I was so incensed, I wrote to the BBB about this one, giving them the town where it's made. Months later, they replied with "unless you can give us the exact address where this product is made, we will not do anything." Toothless! You have to wonder what's going on with gasoline. Do we really get the gallon we pay for? Hopefully this one is tightly controlled.

I know there's plenty more. Do any readers have any other examples? It would be useful to compile a boycott list.

I don't know if anyone would click on the link in the "7 Ways..." article below the picture of John Watson, in small letters -- "Theoretical Psycology," but it yields this link. Dry, but interesting, nonetheless.

Remember the store chain that played subliminal messages that were embedded in the music? That was quite a few years ago. How do we know it's not still being used?

there are people who specialize is "product appearance". they might take 2 hours to prepare a very carefully constructed hamburger. the'll take great care burning each grill mark exactly where they want it. they have tiny spray bottles to spray just the right size droplets of water on to lettuce. they'll painstakingly select just the right firm tomato to slice a single slice from. they get all the lighting just right and take photos with a high end camera on a tripod. of course when you actually go buy a burger from the place it gets slapped together by someone with pimples making minimum wage and they(the burger) don't remotely resemble the ad photo! they call this....marketing, get used to it, it's about sales and profit, not integrity.

Actually allot of the pictures are fiberglass or plastic of the hamburgers. But I was at a McDonalds in Manitowoc Wisconsin, where the Big Mac looked like the picture.

They also use white glue instead of milk when taking pix of breakfast cereal. Watching a cooking show this past year the cook commented on the pictures in the food network magazine. They pointed out how great the turkey looked and the fact that the picture was taken with in a few minutes of coming out of the oven. Then they showed a picture of the same turkey taken 30 minutes later and it looked dried out and shriveled up. Some foods just don't look stay picture perfect for very long.

Well look at this retailer rip-off

How Fitting.

I'll have a foot-long 11" sub please .

I think it's a government conspiracy to try desensitising the taxpayer to reduce our spending and government defiecit....... you know, "Figures don't lie, but liars can figure"

I have to stand up for Subway here.

It might be 11" long, but they bake the bread in house, so I'll forgive a variance.

Plus, it's about the best, least expensive lunch you'll find...........especially the monthly $5 foot long.

No problems with Subway.

Weight the problem of obesity we have in this country, I don't consider it bad. I loved their flatbread. And in all the fast food. I think it's the most healthiest.

Turkey and ham on flatbread, with chips and a bowl of cream of broccoli soup for under $10.00.

But does that make it right?

When I need gas to get where I'm going and where I get it its good quality. I buy and paid for 10 gallons and only get 9, no that's not right.

I'm just not convinced that it's an intentional rip-off. If it is, there are a lot worse out there.

For anyone that's worried about 1" of bread, they can more than make up for it with some extra black olives.

Did you see those ridiculous TV commercials from one of their competitors?

The ones where you're supposed to be disgusted because Subway's meat is cut by machines?

I still can't figure out why having someone's hands on my meat would make it better.

Never mind.

Bought a 15 oz (or maybe it was bigger) wide base coffee travel cup at a Thornton's gas station. First fill up of coffee was free. Later that day I tried to pour a 12 oz can of soda in it and it would not fit. I really doubt the soda people gave me more than I paid for.

Needed a drain pan to do an oil change on a Case 1450 loader/crawler. Sump held around 8 or 10 gallons. Bought a feed pan from Rural Emperor (Rural King but everything is made in China and they don't have kings). The pan was around 15-18 gallon capacity. Could not hold all of the oil. I thought the dealer told me wrong on the volume until I put the old oil in the jugs the new oil came in. Maybe they expect you to over fill feed pans and that is where the rest of the capacity comes from. I always thought that capacity in a pan or bucket was level full or even a little head space at the top.
