Yes, We Scan

Posted June 26, 2010 7:23 AM

A recent airport incident highlights the controversy surrounding new high-resolution body scanners now being installed in many airport terminals. Although some see the new technology as the best way to intercept air terrorists, others see it as crossing the line in terms of personal privacy. Do you think the new technology is worth the privacy trade-offs? Can it effectively identify hidden bombs and/or the materials for making them? And are those who oppose it over-reacting on privacy concerns? What are the alternatives?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Data Acquisition, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Data Acquisition today.

Everybody has an alternative: Passangers can choose another transportation or cancel the trip, and terrorists can select the airport terminals as their targets, rather than the planes.

Wanna stop 'em? think alike !

How can the government be viewed as anything but a bunch of wankers when they let a subcontrator try to avoid public scrutiny by invoking the magic words "National Security"

Scan away. I am averse to being in airplanes that blow apart in the sky.

I don't think there is anything in the constitution that guarantees us the right to fly in privately owned airlines, on our own terms. If I had the choice to fly with airline A or airline B and A scanned but B didn't I would choose A. Once I am safely back on the ground I can be a private as I want. I think that a privately owned company should have the right to protect their multi-million dollar investment and carry their passengers safely.

Come on, it's an airplane ride, not a life sentence. Seriously? People would rather risk biting the dirt at 600mph than to be scanned? I just don't get how this is a "privacy" issue at all. Nobody cares what your packing between your legs unless it's a bomb.

Totally agree.

And if the reason they don't want to be scanned is because they possess a bad (fat) figure, then they should lose some weight!!!

The plane will fly better too with less weight onboard!!!

I agree that It's a small price to pay for the privilege of an airplane ride

I also think that the company doing the work should have to undergo a bit of scrutiny, considering tax dollars are paying for the development.

I call Bullshine on the claim that all images will be deleted immediately, should there be an incident the 1st thing that will happen is a review of the passenger in questions scan. Once again I don't see that as a problem.

What other bits of the process is the company misrepresenting?

Flying is a privelege, not a right. There are no limits on the providers of that privelege to what they can do to make it safe. Scan away. When I have to ride a plane, I prefer to get to the other end of the ride in one piece. Ride the Greyhound if you don't like the body scanners.

Besides, if anyone wants to stare at MY goodies when I get on a plane they are just plain sick! After they see the next 5000 johnsons they won't even remember what mine looked like. Don't think for a moment that there isn't someone out there better or worse looking than you that will take the dirty thoughts of you right out of the viewers head for the next couple minutes, until the next better/worse one comes along.

Do they work? I don't know. I think the biggest problem we have is we underestimate their determination to adapt and come up with something new to kill us with. The best guard is people all watching and ratting out the sweaty guy who looks like he is about to meet Allah! I know everyone cries about "racial profiling", but the best thing to do is keep ones eyes and ears open for suspicious looking folks. Most "suspicious" people are feeling guilty about something, and if they are ratted out as a terrorist, and they are searched and found to be in possession of crack, then they belong off the plane anyway!

Flying is a privelege, not a right.

That priveledge becomes a right once you purchase a ticket and agree to the license implied.

if anyone wants to stare at MY goodies when I get on a plane they are just plain sick!

Why would anyone be offended by an image that isn't any more revealing than an X-ray in a doctor's office.

It's terrible we have to 'at times' to get our feet off the ground, but in those times we must feel as safe as we can..The body scan is a safety measure that will make the most of us 'think' we are a bit more safe..I'm in favor of a detonation room equipped with devices to set off the most simple and educated explosive devices..If they do feel that their right to privacy is being abused, let them set 10 min. in the little room..barring cleanup time when everyone has to be scanned...

This is a no brainer-scan, scan, scan. Many years ago I worked on Forward Looking Infra Red, FLIR equipment. The black and white display showed the temperature signature of everything including people. No matter what anyone thinks, these displays will not show the people naked. I don't care if the examiners see my true outline or absorption differences, the airline pilots flying the plane have the right to be assured that the passengers are not carrying weapons or explosives. We should use all the tools that permit the airlines to facilitate prompt departures safely. Use the most reliable lest expensive instruments that get the job done. If biometric identification and reliable background information are available, use those too if they expedite the process. We live in a society that is sooo PC, get over it.

I am for all this scanning as long that a similar procedure is applied to employees and vehicles coming in the airport from the back door. If stringent security measures only applies to passengers, why bother?

Scan or walk through naked - I could care less.

Flying is never a right - ticket or no ticket. When you bought the ticket you agreed to 'do the necessary'.
