Re: Caption This for 01/17/14

So is it a barrel sculpture or a Photoshop job?

Given that a number of the barrels are cut off on a fixed plane or appear to be protruding from others plus others are sitting in positions that would make them unstable I have suspicions that this is either a faked picture or a deliberately designed and organized pile held together by welding and other such methods.

It must be photoshoped. There is no shadow from the cross or that red pipe to the left (compare to the tree).

You're right. The different light source angles are wrong. Plus, there are the partial barrels on the right and left which disappear into the background image at the bottom plane. Various crush points show up as edited when run through rudimentary error level analysis.

Still, fun.

I don't know if it is photoshopped or not, but I disagree with your reasoning. The cross is in line with the sun and hides its vertical shadow, but the shadow under the arms is visible. The red pipe has a shadow on its right hand side, there no gap because it is close to the wall. The parallel lines converge as they should, they should eventually converge to a point on the horizon.

Oh, so you think it's normal for the pipe and the cross to have a shadow on the right, while the tree has a showdow to the left? So this was taken on a planet other than earth where there are two suns, and they blocked the light from one to the pipe and the other to the tree. I see. Your reasoning makes much more sense than mine.

Think perspective.

The sun is so far away that the shadows are parallel, but the wall is further away so the shadows appear closer together on the wall. The shadows on the floor demonstrate this.

Van Gogh's, "The Bedroom" is famous for perspective. Van Gogh Museum

You can disagree with my reasoning all you want, which is why I included the error level image...for all those doubting Thomases.

This image hardly has ANY original content.

Plausible story: A man living peacefully for many years was inundated with inspectors knocking on his door about complaints of a messy yard from the recently built apartment house next door.....After a full year of this harassment he decided to get even by building this sculpture....When inspectors arrived they could take no action because the man claimed that this sculpture was considered art which he added to his property in an effort to beautify his yard for his complaining neighbors....The neighbors have banded together in an effort to buy the sculpture, and to date have offered $6000.00....but withdrew the offer when the man exclaimed,"Just wait till you see the next one!"....

The Hanford Nucular Reservation in Washington State takes advantage of the rule for locating hazardous materials 10 feet from the closest structure, with a minimum 5% grade for "positive drainage". The Holier than Thou attitude is clearly evident.

Re 21, 24 & 28. I like the idea of a contrived image.

It is the same scene taken at different times of the day (with a shift in the Sun to account for the shadow angles) where the left and right halves are joined down the middle using a digital photo-stitch technique. All good fun.

But the underlying business is recycling drums to supply 'blanks' to the Pan Am steel Band.
