Keeping Carbon Out of It

In an effort to limit the amount of carbon dioxide that they contribute to the atmosphere, some manufacturers and industrial processors are looking to carbon capture and storage methods. But how does it work? Gaseous CO2 is captured before it is released into the atmosphere and compressed into liquid, then pumped into rock at the ocean floor. Many scientists see this as a promising solution to handle our excess of greenhouse gases, but some questions still arise. Where are the best places on earth to store CO2? Can all industries afford to do it?

The problem is really one of keeping it there. If it were to leak out, the results would be calamitous. In that respect, combustion waste and nuclear waste are in the same category.

Why not sell it to the carbonated beverage industry? I have wondered about this whole carbon capture issue when we all know ( maybe "we" don't) that the carbonated beverage industry as well as the industrial gas suppliers sell the stuff to soft drink, aerosol spray can manufacturers, and sparkling water distributors. ( and too many other users to list)

I don't know how much CO2 is made deliberately each year but if CO2 is such a problem to "Global Warming" why hasn't it's sale and distribution of it been banned? Too many people like their coke & beer???

Anyone know how much CO2 is sold each year???

Yes, A forest is excellent in absorbtion of Co2. The cement industry is one of the largest polluters with the cement manufacture process. Recent proposal from the UK suggest that since concrete absorbs Co2 so well, we build concrete structures to absorb it. To think of all the years we have been trying to prevent carbonation/corrosion of concrete structures? Go Figure

The only purpose of burning in the first place is to generate energy. Is the whole thing not futile if we have to give back all or most of that energy to compress the CO2 to these high pressures? Or if we turn the CO2 into byproducts that release CO2 when used?

studies have been made to remove the CO2 from coal fired power plants. the amount of capital will cause the plants cost to increas 50%. THEN INORDER TO EXPORT 1000mw, The plant will have to produce 1500MW. The CO2 can be compressed to 1000 psi and injected into formation. The formations are rare and would limit the location. The above reference use of CO2 sent to the bottom of the oceans is problamatic, The CO2 could come back and create another set Bermuda triangle incidents.

It seems that deforestation of the planet is the biggest mistake we can make. After all, its the world of plant life that has created this atmosphere from a toxic abundance of CO2. Why spend money on capture and store when we can capitalize on agricultural solutions that consume CO2? Surely we are no where near the limit of how much plant life this planet can accommodate!!!

Long after mankind is extinct, green plant life will be here to restore the planet.

I thought that I read here that CO2 pumped into greenhouses increases production, or growth. Could the CO2 be collected in low pressure ,high volume floating dome like the storage tanks that store natural gas. When I grew up there were huge tanks that had floating domes that rose when they were full, and shrank when they were lower.

If greenhouses were constructed next to CO2 producers, the gas could be stored at lower pressures in the tanks, and continually allowed to pass into the greenhouse. Twofold benefits. Lower CO2 emissions, and a salable product from the greenhouse.

I have recently read that a highly productive soil is found in the Amazon and the main reason is that it contains high levels of carbon.

If this is so the best method of fixing carbon would be to convert biomass by destructive distillation or straight carbonisation (as used to make charcoal). The resultant carbon, unless burnt, would then be removed from the atmosphere and the environment and used to make our soils more productive.

So far as I am aware almost all plastics are produced from fossil fuels so if, instead of or as well as recycling, all waste plastics were fused together inert lumps/blocks would be produced - these could be stored indefinitely in outlandish sites - shoved down old mine shafts (available to the science of the future) out of harms way and so remove this carbon from the environment.

There is a project here (South Africa) which converts old paper and old plastics (mixed) together to produce a highly durable timber substitute - encouragement of this could only benefit us all.
