The following is 'OFF topic'

'Architraves are a pain to paint'

As the topic is 'off topic posts', the following is 'ON topic'

'Architraves are a pain to paint'

I hope this clarifies the matter.

Del!!! How could you!!! Posting such an off topic message to a new-bee who is innocent as to the proses of CR 4 Daily!!! After all, the poster had very little experience - I mean he has only posted 337 times! My God! He's an innocent!!! And you, with your high jinx, misguide him and confuse him!

Why for goodness sake! He might go to another posting and have no idea whether he's off-topic or not!

Hanging's too good for you! Burning's too good for you! You should be torn into itty-bitty bits and buried alive!!!

That happens to me all the time. I always knew someone was to blame, and now I have an answer. It may be the wrong answer, but I just don't care. Can't we nail him upside down first or something like that ? Yeah, let's all hunt him down. Get him trapped in a corner with big pointy sticks. I wants his toes because Winter is approaching and my gloves have holes in the fingers.

At the risk of being pedantic...

I think it's point 'ed' sticks I should be trapped with.

If you tried to trap me with pointy sticks I'd simple ask them to point the way out of the trap... (or would that need to be point 'ing' sticks).

I think this is becoming pointless....

No, no - I meant get you trapped in the corner while you're clutching pointy stick ! I'm sure I'm just complication things here. Hows about I go for some kind of conspiracy angle next ? Just to further confuse, I've always been off-Topics. I like Mars, or that snack ' you can eat between meals.

I'm sure the voting system can function to enable people to give opinion on 'Off-Topic'. I'm going to hide my drivel here by checking the box for 'Off-Topic'. Sometimes when I see a post that is 'On-Topic' and good I cast a 'good' vote for it. Occasionally posts the don't address the Original Question can be good, so I vote for those on occasion as well. Some completely nuts questions end up having useful comment, so the whole issue does get a bit complicated.

Re: Off Topic Post

The 'Off-Topic' issue is like trying to decide if something has enough technical merit to be asked within CR4. Somebody would have to be a bit pompous to suggest a 'height-bar' on that. I don't mind any Science/Engineering question (so long as it's not someone looking for a homework cheat), or disingenuously seeking to subvert discussion to Religion/Politics. Having stated that, I am somewhat whimsical about which discussions I'll partake in. The general 'mood' of CR4 changes throughout the week. The 'CR4 Feedback' forum is there ( in my understanding) to addresss any matters about how the whole thing works, and give a place for general comments or requests for futute features.

Unaccredited chunks of Wiki that get spliced in annoy me slightly

The Spell-checker is great, even if it does have (obviously enough) American spelling tendencies.

The vermin question is far to complex for any analysis. My best guess is that it's some sort of fuzzy-logic thing, or perhaps the result of a butterfly flapping it's wings and introducing chaotic effects around the globe.

'Architraves are a pain to paint'

I asked around in the tearoom.

Architraves - It sounds edible - on topic

Pain - was told of pains in places that I did not know even existed - Always on topic.

Paint - Paint can be off colour but always on topic - on topic

Most sentences are on some or other topic. Therefore on topic.

I turned off the off topic filter awhile ago.

If you reply to a off topic post, you're set to "OT" by default.

I also joined just because, I'd just gotten an internet connection for the 1st time & needed to explore all the little nooks of different editors [wrong thread, no check box for that!]

& Del's post was an example

I also like to work on my stream of blather writing skills

Maybe there should be a section devoted to the brits [ present & former colonies ]

or maybe an entire OT section

I keep waiting for a political section to appear, after all who better to design a solution than the technocrats.

I can see by when the replies started to arrive, who waites for the daily digest & who surfs around the site.

Daily Digest - I remember that. For some reason I don't get it any more, although CL says it's being sent and my IT controller says it's not being blocked... <sigh>

Now I just stalk a few dodgy characters and see what turns up. No time to surf properly.

And FYI Garth, the DD arrived in my mailbox before I did, so there was no waiting involved .

Now, is this on or off topic? Let the public decide!! Vote now and you could win...oops, that's not allowed in the UK anymore!!

This post is officially off-topic

.. and if a couple of dudes could have gone off the track in that race it might have gotten better. I can imagine the coded race message for 'slow down and let Hamilton through' - Almost as much as I can imagine the sudden failure of the comms systems; "Well, I thought you said don't you get past it".

I'm going to mop the kitchen. One day I'll achieve fame. If not, I want some of Del's 'Infamy, Infamy'.

ps, nah I think it was just tough. What I really want to know is what did that guy hopping in the pit have to say - 'my *$£"^*& foot you brillcreamesque car-driving *$£"**d' or something like that. Next time ( If Hamilton doest get all teenage and quit sulking)! I'm young, dynamic,good-looking, can cut through Milton Keynes like you wouldn't believe, and I rarely wear a base-ball cap.

I do a pretty good off-topic as well.

Political Science Section is what you mean. Right?

What do you expect to be in the Political Science Section?

Weapons technology would qualify as part of the topics under the title according to Machievelli in Art of War.

Since my wife isn't in the house I can't spell anymore.

There are many colleges and universities that have Arts and Sciences buildings.

A technology created does tend to make one wonder what good it is.

Power, and lots of it to waste on the arts is what enables civilization.

Today I am thinking of a very good looking cell made of a 5 gallon glass jar and a rusted pick head and saltwater and a string of beercans run to a flashlight bulb illuminating a picture of an atomic explosion superemposed on a picture of a detective with a flashlight looking for clues on a bloody floor.

A truly off topic post is one that has no connection whatsoever to the titled question or discussion post.

For example say I ask, Have you got, or do you know of a great robot?

And you write back: I named my Horse No Name and he has three legs.

That is off topic.

Say I ask: What is a great robot? and you write back, Romba the vacum cleaner.

That is on topic.

Say I write then What affects on civilization does Romba represent, and what will its presence in our homes do to our culture?

This is an interesting question to address and worthy of some thought that is not about purely creating Romba, or anyother process or machine, but addresses intended and unintended consequences of what we do with the Science we mess with for fun or profit.

Hence my sence that off topic and political science categories are worthy of delineation so youth on CR4 will learn to focus and understand the difference.

As it was when I flew planes around by myself, I repeated back to the controller my instructions so that they knew I understood the directive coming from my question for guidance.

Say I call on the radio the traffic controller and ask "Am I cleared for landing?" and they answer, "The Boston Red Soxs have won the World Series."

Now that is an example of off topic.

In a discussion about intalling sheetrock including judgements about good robots to deliver to the site the material to be installed, if I include a paragraph about how people get injured installing sheetrock, I am still on topic as far as I am concerned even if I mention practical psycological considerations related to operations of interface between people and machinery to accomplish a task.

Welcome Transcendian,

The request for a definition was a way to get the ball rolling & to elicit some comentary about the rating system.

Here's another frivolous discussion you might enjoy.

Political Science

I would expect lots of sprited exchanges about potential improvements in the organizations that determine the amount of freedom we enjoy.

Many of the threads take a political turn, since taxes & regulation, determine which technologies win [or lose]

Political Science

What, may I ask, is so scientific about politics, one of the most whimsical, arbitrary, and corrupt occupations invented by man for man, with almost nothing else on the agenda?

- Is it the empirical research of what politics are or should be?

- Has the on going research produce a change in the above?

- Was it ever expected to produce such change?

- By whom, and to what end?

Without referring to Wiki, may I suggest that PS is separate and distinct from BS and it does have a (somewhat) erudite following. Misled as may be, PS does rule the world, in spite of RS (real science). However, hope is on the horizon! With proper BS, we may sway the PS to RS. (not likely to happen in our lifetimes though).

Anyway, even if we could, it would make no sense! What would a world look like without PS, BS, & RS?

Kinda like a definition of war:

War is peace (on our terms). Now that's real PS!

No comment about your discussion.

Just a comment on your current tag. "What's the most perfect curve you can come up with? "

Re: Off Topic Post

Alright: A Story

It is on topic and off topic since the relationship of women to physics and science is confusing. It is easier to understand when we study war.

We Linemen knew a pilot for Toro Lawn Mowers who flew the salesmen in from somewhere to sell lawnmowers in Fort Lauderdale.

He was a real straight laced Babtist Country sort.

One day we were cleaning and fueling the plane and came across Playboy and Penthouse magazines in the plane.

"What's this Earl?"

He looked at us with full relaxed conviction and said, "God never made anything more beautiful than a naked woman."

The off topic is nearly too discomfiting to go on. It is like a Friends Meeting that devolves to an uninspired by God gossipfest. In the Quaker thing across from the Episcopal Church they go back and forth in Gramercy Park.

The Seasons do ground us. Why write anything in relation to a question or discussion that has a title that is Off Topic?

We can say that a personal comment about the person asking a question or positing a discussion is clearly off topic.

But what if we say a man's angles are as beautiful as a woman's curves?

Where is the balance?

Where does the apostophie go?

My little understanding of Philosophy does recommend Aristotle's idea that in a discussion every word must have one meaning, since otherwise the discussion will never come to resolution.

I said earlier in some writing somewhere in this discussion or the other two related ones, that I fully agree with some strictures since really they just make sense.

My humble suggestion is that it would be nice of CR4 to allow for a mind and experience soul such as myself to at least feel comfortable to make a comment respectfully about a subject greater engineers and scientists than ourselves are discussing.

I even feel bad because as a movie electrician I don't even think about anything but watts and amps and have trouble with little amounts of electricity discussions.

I would really like it if a political science category of participation was allowed, partly because the site is so wonderful, and such comments would seem to refine discussions for all involved.

Getting back to the curves of women as superior in the Universe in the off topic category, this is true in general, it is a lucky man who has curves attractive to women and men.

We all admire people who are going somewhere, or have been somewhere. The ones that go around in endless circles of the same sad thing, disturb us.

Huh? That's gobbldygook!

Now:

"But what if we say a man's angles are as beautiful as a woman's curves?

Where is the balance?"

First of all, there is no balance. If things were balanced, procreation would not have occured and the human race would have perished long ago. Don't jump on me about the perspective from a female's point of view. The "angles" of a well-toned, firm male body may be aesthestically pleasing but they can NEVER hold a candle to a well-toned, firm female body. Thus I state emphatically, the well-toned, firm, healthy (and yes, probably under 30, but I know someone's gonna jump on me for that one) is undeniably the embodiment of the most perfect of all curves in the universe.

Having that being said, there's a song in Hebrew going like:

To the fly-male, the fly-female looks absolutely divine in figure,

To the porcupine-male, the porcupine-female tops the beauty contest

To the camel ...

You get the picture

nO Science involved that would problem, the only RS involved is a bit of compare & contrast. That would be history though. What would be the replacement social construct? The only way to get good work, is by people getting paid. Everyone gets paid, how can we pay directly? The indirect system we have now, leaves no choice but corruption. Expecting public servants to do the right thing, for a warm fuzzy feeling is not realistic.

Ok. How about them, while in some official capacity, to be all being paid the same amount (which frankly should never be more than the average salary on the land) as each other, so that they get to feel, financially, that as long as they are public servants, they should be given the same amount and in limited term of office, to prove their net worth to this trivial thing called "Public Service" only now turned from some euphemism into a real service, not a self-rewarding career for heavens sake!

The current system only encourage shady characters to prosper in a fake environment of so called "Public Service" to pretend, embezzle and abuse authority to the very limited end of gaining some personal fortunes, in direct (Bribe) or indirect (granting government contracts, in return to some more bribe, be it money franchise rights of jobs to relatives) forms of corruption.

I'm sure there's nothing in the above, you hear for the first time.

- Did I just invent all this?

- Do officials avoid wasteful use (or abuse of) tax payer's money?

Yuval

Good start, term limits are a double edged sword.

The argument for is to keep a person from forming their own little kingdom.

The argument against limiting the term, would center around the complexity of the issues to be dealt with & continuity of direction.

A future government blog [ nod to Masu ], would be nice!

"The argument against limiting the term, would center around the complexity of the issues to be dealt with & continuity of direction."

How about this:

An electorate takes office halfway through the sitting person's tenure and shares, somewhat limited, power and decision making with that person. That way, some sort of continuity of direction would be addressed. Sort of like a temporary vice president that then becomes king of the hill.

Food for thought?

Johnjohn,

More good stuff, effective transitional stratiges will offset the downsides to term limits. Another troublesome area is the old guard domination of house & senate commitees, too much quid pro quo, leads too much wasteful spending.

Having better methods is a small part, effective marketing to build the necessary ground swell change will require.

Cold when you hit that first frigid teeth clencher, but, as you say, the water's great!

Speaking of that, back in the sixty's when "health clubs' became popular, they usually, (here in the States) had a dry sauna, a hot whirlpool bath and a frigid (just above freezing) pool. After an intense workout, I would spend a little time in the dry sauna (after a cooldown) and absolutely enjoy that COLD pool. Many folks thought I was nuts (still do, but life's fun). Sometimes you just gotta push things a little (just to get those around you to wake up and do a little more than smell the programming keyboard (roses).

You know what Kris, I've built five acoustic guitars and I love each and every one on them. I play a little Country & Western music and ascribe to higher "notes" such as Classical guitar. Off topic, I know from Off Topic Post, so I guess I can just throw anything in here. The point I'm trying to make with the guitar thing is that I'm just following your lead to just throw somethng into the pot. Care to raise the ante?

Life's good aint it? ( I'm just listening to Sachmo singing "What a wonderful world")

Care to raise the ante?

LOL

Years back I went for my first ever sauna. My friend (who was more versed in the ways of the world) said to me " Over there Kris... it's the 'plunge-pool', just jump right on in quick" . I thought the world had ended ! A wonderful world ? Bloody hell yes, but I was anything but chilled out. I've never yet experienced something that shocked me so bad. When I eventually dragged my convulsing body out, he was stood there with this annoying grin on his face. The b*"^*"d. Being thrashed with a bunch of birch sticks would have been pleasure by comparison.

Diggin' deep in the archives are we? I'm flattered that you would call it blather, it elevates it from its true status as drivel. But converting drivel to blather without a current chart, I would have to guess it's 1.0 drivel which, at the current rate of exchange works out to about 0.89537828 blathers.

Maybe there should be a section devoted to the brits [ present & former colonies ]

Yes, but one already exists , it's called Australia. Oh sorry , I thought you said penal colony.

Sorry, I thought it said "Off yer trolley Post" . I must go see the Optician again. His name's David, btw. Does a retinal scan if you want, and will even let you have a copy for 10 quid. I'm too tight to lay out that kind of money, but it does have a certain 'fun' appeal. I was a lazy bugger yesterday and didn't get up until late (recovering from a shopping spree on Friday), so my sleeping pattern is out of sync. The upside is that I still have the Jumbo Crossword from Saturday left to do later today. This is the ramble thread, isn't it ? Anyway, it's still pitch black outside, and there isn't much going on. I'd like to crank up some music a bit, but it would upset the neighbours at this hour. In all this x-mas mayhem I don't even know what we're having for the usual 'Sunday Roast'. Hope it's lamb. They're very cute, but just so tasty. Garden's a bit of a state, but it's too damn cold to do anything at present (not that I like gardening much) and.......................................

Did you say retinal or rectal scan? I know a chap that will pay YOU 10 quid for a rectal scan, Very thorough. I'm just saying.

And why are you futzing around in the garden, when you should be working on THE MOVIE? You wanna play music, come up with a score, some theme music, need to be securing the rights to some tunage. How about working in Yakkity Sax by Boots Randolph?

Or maybe you could fire up the couch over in casting, that seems like that would be right up your alley, I mean whilst you're hanging around the frozen food aisle you could be handing out your Big Time Pinewood Studio Producer cards. I' m just reiterating.

Eyes wide shut. -You are pushing it as far as humor and usefulness in the mix of thinking as far as I judge your comments. What really are you contributing? What does the pair of docs explain? Put some tits in your eyes and go to bedlam till you get a life and put something in the threads other than cryptic bellyaching.

Eyedoctorpictures of surgeons on the phone means nothing to me and is not even worthy of Off Topic.

Oh! For heaven sake! How I have sinned, posting something that you judge worthless or just don't get! So, like I guessing you're 5 years old or something? Perhaps it's because I didn't hand out the 3-D glasses - or could it be you just saw a doctor and he didn't give you a lollipop?

Whatever I did to raise you ire, please forgive me.

"Prominence" means you must have tighter upper lips in order to succeed another prominent whatchamacallit. What can you do?

- You cannot win the game

- You cannot end in tie

- Heck, you cannot even quit

I hesitate to say this Transcendian, but I think people who've made posts totalling 2722,1922, and 3481 disagree with you. Being prolific doesn't make any of us experts, but it does lend some credibility to a view that your wording is a bit 'off' so to speak.. Tell us a frivolous joke or something, then we can all smile again. How about this, which I just noticed - Cant sir dance ? Oh, OK, sorry- that was a bit personal (and probably not even that funny). Feel free to do the same back.

Well ya got your C-note, your Benjamin.

Regarding things dangling, the way I understand it , this is English, not Latin , so no real rule on letting your freak flag fly or keeping your participle from dangling..

And what is this "FZ" the kids are yammering about?
