A Temporary Sabbatical - Off To Iraq

08/26/2008 11:27 AM

Just wanted to drop a line to everyone one and let you know that this Friday will be the last day I check this forum for about a year or so.

I will soon be reporting for military deployment and after a couple months of preparations I'll be in Iraq for about a year.

And although I do not post often to this forum, I do read most all the threads and thoroughly enjoy the insight, knowledge, and entertainment you all have provided since I've been a member.

It's been a pleasure.

Take care and I'll be back soon.

JavaHead

Say hi to my brother when you get there. He is on his second vacation with the Indiana National Guard. I keep a large outdoor flag hanging over my desk along with a "Bless Our Troops In Action" yard sign. I do this to remind me every day where he is along with others from my community and country. I will remember and pray for you as well.

As for the internet, my brother said he and a few others chipped in to have a connection put in their condo. The service is slow and sometimes not available. I guess it depends where you end up on how well the Internet is.

A soldier makes the ultimate sacrifice,

He does so, that those less willing or unable don't have to.

Courage and valor are his allies,

In battle he is abound with both.

He suppresses fear, for it is his greatest enemy.

He does what he must, for he knows it is right

Whilst some of the lesser may lack the vision to see it,

His work is noble,

and it is cherished and apprediated,

by many more than he may know.

Godspeed, my friend.

May your brothers have your back and the angels be your shield.

Come back safe, brother.

Ian

Proof that there really are idiots out there. You have your right to your opinion, and I respect that, but don't disgrace those that have, and will, fight and die for your right to that opinion. And next time, sign in like a man (just don't tell your mom).

No Ferris, I think it should stand, only because of the excellent response from The Duck. He writes:

"The Russians did by building a memorial to them at Kursk.

Soldiers are soldiers. Wars end".

I too, was upset after reading the "guest" post. I spent time thinking of an appropriate responce. However, The Duck beat me to it. That's good, because he summed it up with eloquence and an economy of words, that I could not have.

That post is not appropriate in this thread. To make such a comment under the spineless "guest", is a discredit to yourself, to "guests" everywhere, and a real good reason for other guests to sign up. Then, you won't be confused with this coward.

soldiers are soldiers no matter where they are from. all are defending what they think is right. as long as they served honorably and died with honor, yes all soldiers should be honored.

Re: A Temporary Sabbatical - Off To Iraq

08/27/2008 12:02 PM

My comments here are mine and mine alone. They are based on 26 years military service, active and reserve, and eight years working for a defense contractor supporting military units. Parts of this you may find humorous (I hope) and parts may be disturbing, but not offensive (I hope).

First of all, I wish Javahead a year of boredom. Given the area that he is going to, boredom is to be preferred to the type of excitement that occurs in combat zones. It is certainly safer. But if you aren't bored, Javahead, I certainly hope and pray for your safety.

Secondly, I deplore the fact that we even have to send anyone into harm's way. I wish the situation over there did not exist. And I am not putting my head in the sand here, but I wish our leaders could find ways, could have found ways, to resolve issues without resorting to force.

Thirdly, please don't blindly glorify soldiers. They are human, not superhuman. Not everyone enters the military with the idea of service to country. If they only enlisted for noble reasons, we wouldn't have to offer such attractive enlistment/reenlistment bonuses and offers. We have a military prison at Leavenworth. Needless to say, we don't send the heroes there. Reading posts like IanR, you could think that the Army is made up of "Horatio's" guarding the bridge.

Finally, as pointed out in other posts here, honoring military service is not enough. As Clausewitz said, warfare is an extension of politics. Military service, no matter how honorable or valorous on the individual level, is ultimately the fulfillment of a political agenda. There have been many brave men and women, highly decorated, who have faithfully served corrupt or even perverse causes. Honorable service can serve a dishonorable end.

Thanks you all for listening/reading my discourse (or diatribe, if you prefer). I am sure that Javahead is going out of a sense of duty and will perform honorably and well. Hearing news from "downrange" from Javahead would be very, very welcome. And we can support as well.

In closing, just let me wish Javahead Godspeed and safety again, and offer two pieces of advice which always stood me in good stead:

1. Never volunteer.

2. Never share a foxhole or defensive position with someone braver than you are.

I hope we hear from you soon, Javahead!

Re: A Temporary Sabbatical - Off To Iraq

"Thirdly, please don't blindly glorify soldiers."

Please, don't be so quick to make that assessment of my statement.

I don't just blindly glorify every one who enlists in the military. I am fully aware that there are those in the service who have enlisted for the wrong reasons. That is what article 15s and Leavenworth are for. I am referring to those who willingly perform their duty out there on the battlefield. Those who do it because they believe in it as well as those who are just doing it only because they were ordered to. They (the ones who are only in it for the enlistment bonuses and the like) made a commitment when they signed up and they are honoring that commitment, even though they may not believe in what they are doing. They are still worthy of praise and honor, because they are out there. They could have gone AWOL or committed an infraction to get an article 15, but they didn't. They are out there doing work that many of our armchair quarterbacks here could not comprehend nor have the stomach for. I applaud all who have the guts to go to hell when called, whether their hearts are in it or not.

I don't expect every soldier to perform super human acts of courage on the battle field, just being there and doing your duty elevates my opinon of you.

It disappoints me when one of our own is shipping off to the front and we are bickering about the few bad eggs that taint our military or the opinions of a few who have a problem with the politics of war. We need to be supportive of our brother here as he is setting forth on this dangerous journey. I know some of you wish to make your idealogical statements against this war and that is fine. Just save the debates and diatribe for when he returns home to us.

That is all.

JavaHead you have my support 110% and my prayers for your safe return.

Stand tall when you can, but duck when you must.

God bless

Ian

To bp01 and all others reading. I'd apologize for my rant.

I tend to be a little (over?)sensitive to this and you caught me on a bad day.

You see, my family is heavily military. My late father was Army 8th Field Artillery 16 1/2 years, his dad fought with the Army 1st Infantry in WW2 (he was part of the Omaha Beach offensive), my mother's father was a fighter pilot with the RAF in WW2 and her mother drove an airfield tanker truck for the RAF in the war. Had I not been so badly injured in a car accident right after highschool I too would have also enlisted. So I tend to hold Soldiers in high regard.

I guess, everyone is entitled to voice their opinion and there are many who are not fans of this war. So, If I was offensive, I apologize.

Not offensive at all, Ian! Firm in your opinion and outspoken, but not offensive. Besides, you are among friends. Even when we don't agree, we can still be amicable.

What I took from your comments was that this forum thread needs to focus on best wishes for Javahead. In that vein, I thank you for your sentiment, and simply add mine -- in wishing Javahead security, health and a safe return home.

Hello The Commoner

There are no "limits on Good Answers" in any thread I am aware of.

You may vote a GA point for each answer you choose. (Remember to Refresh your Internet Browser, for that GA Point to register on your Browser's Webpage.

If you vote a GA point a second time for any answer, the second GA point does not in fact actually register.

Likewise, you cannot vote a GA Point for your own Topic or your own Reply.

Kind Regards....

Nice post,

People sometimes get to emotional about this.

As i am from Europe, My stance on the war is that i disagree with the current Bush administration. Not with the american people.

The Canadian Airborne Division, once a highly decorated and highly trained commando unit, cannot now or ever show it's regimental colours because of an act of supreme sadism on the part of a few individuals who called themselves soldiers.

The unit was disbanded under those shamefull conditions and those good men that were left were allowed to fly the regimental banners for one last time before dropping them on the ground.

It was indeed a sad day for the Esprit du Corps.

Somalia 1992

Since the Airborne was designed to deploy rapidly into "hot" situations, its 1, 2, and 3 Commando units, with attached support – a total of 900 soldiers – were sent to Somalia late in 1992. The operation was called Operation Deliverance and formed part of the overall U.S.-led Operation Restore Hope.

The unit had recently been reduced to battalion size and was still in the throes of reorganization as well as the severe cut-backs by the government at the time. Its positive accomplishments in Somalia have been overshadowed by the torture and murder of Somali teenager Shidane Arone, which became known as the Somalia Affair. The unit was subsequently disbanded.

The Somalia Affair was a Canadian military scandal in the mid-1990s. It began with the brutal 1993 beating death of a Somali teenager, Shidane Arone, at the hands of two Canadian soldiers participating in the United Nations humanitarian efforts in Somalia. The crime, documented by photos, shocked the Canadian public and brought to light internal problems in the Canadian Airborne Regiment that went beyond the two soldiers directly involved. Also of interest are the theories that the experimental malaria drugs that they were taking could have caused some of the behaviour. Questions were asked about why 2 Commando was chosen for that mission despite disciplinary problems at the time. Perhaps most damaging to the leadership of the Canadian military was how it reacted after the events became public, as accusations of covering up the event surfaced.

Eventually a public inquiry was called. Despite being controversially cut short by the government at the time led by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and Minister of National Defence David Collenette, the Somalia Inquiry found deep problems in the leadership of the Canadian Forces. The affair led to the disbanding of Canada's elite Canadian Airborne Regiment, greatly damaged the morale of the Canadian Forces, and damaged both the domestic and international reputation of Canadian soldiers.

The "silly' duck

I kinda figured you might have.

The really sad part was that the high command of the unit tried to cover up at the expense of the soldiers. In the end everybody lost.

Don't listen to the nay sayers. The mission of freedom from tyranny and terrorism is needed around the world. It's not so funny, how so many forget 9/11. I too served in my younger days, but never had to serve in such a capacity. Go forth knowing that you are highly praised by us and we are grateful for your service.

Not to sound religious, but if you have God in your heart, and Peace in your mind, no matter the out come, you'll know it was a righteous one.

A man who is circumspect habitually examines things on every side in order to weigh and deliberate. Maintain a high level of situational awareness and your future will be long and hopefully prosperous.

My days in that theater were successfull due to maintaining a very high level of situational awareness founded on quality training and solid team support.

Best of luck to you and yours.

You sir are a hero to me as my father was in WWII. In this day and age I can think of worse people to look up to as heros. I pray for your, and all others safety. I pray for the courage and strength of your family. A soldier sacrifices a lot more than their spare time. I am one American who is very proud of you and your fellow soldiers. If you get online I hope you will honor this board for your post.

Thank You!!

Not from USA or any of its allies, but from a far away land.. a land which has suffered a lot in the hands of a brutal terrorist called Parbakaran.........from the tiny island called Sri Lanka.

Javahead i wish to add to all the wishes and prayers for your safe return from Iraq.

I only wish people in this world understand only great people and great nations have the courage to stand up to a terrorist. Just because a few soldiers did some dirty acts you cannot disgrace entire army.

When combating terrorists civilian deaths are unavoidable mainly because terrorists are cowards and hide among ordinary civilians. People who pint finger at governments or army for civilian hardships should first point their fingers at the terrorists.

Javahead we look forward to welcoming you when you return safely from Iraq.

Re: A Temporary Sabbatical - Off To Iraq

08/29/2008 10:05 AM

Thank you all very much for you kind words, well wishes, prayers, support, and honest opinions.

Indeed many do not join the military from some purely patriotic quality. In fact, when I originally enlisted in 1985 it was to provide the means by which to escape from an oppressive household and earn money for college.

I served for 4 years in the regular Army; 2 in Germany and 2 at Fort Bragg. Then I served 3 in the National Guard as an instructor. At that point, my life became overly complex with college, a job, a girl friend, and a band. The military was one of the things I weeded out and quit in 1991.

For ten years my life developed and unfolded before my eyes. I was lucky enough to get a well paying job that I loved designing machinery, got married and built my first home. Nary a thought of military service ever crossed my mind; I had signed my discharge papers and never looked back.

Then, on September 11th 2001 my entire life changed. I watched in horror as the events of that day unfolded live in front of me. There was no denying the feeling I had inside of me and there was no alternative to the decision I made. That night I told my wife that I needed to reenlist and she justifiably baulked at my words and said no. So I thought about it for a week and looked at my life. It was a good life... a great job that I enjoyed going to, a loving wife, a nice house... I mean it was a good life. But in that moment, none of it meant anything to me anymore so I approached my wife again, and again she said no.

Before the end of that October my divorce was final, I had moved out of what was now her house, quit my job and was reporting to Fort Bragg with everything I now owned... a car, two duffle bags full of military issue and one suitcase.

Saving you from the rest of my story... I Leave you with these thoughts:

There is no denying that there is evil in the world and that it infests not only those that are deemed to be evil, but also those fighting them.

In law enforcement, there is an understanding that those that abide by the law live in the white, those that break the law live in the black, and those that enforce the law live in the really wide gray area in-between.

Certainly, there comes to question the reasons of why we are in Iraq, what underlying political motivations are there, what other ways could have been used, why we still have not found the person identified as responsible for 9/11.

I can only tell you this... for me, internally I have these same questions, to define what goes on inside of me and every other solder as 'internal conflict' is just the tip of the iceberg. But, as a soldier, you can not let these questions fester or they will eat you alive and torment you for the rest of your life.

Ronald Reagan once said "Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

Once I put on my uniform, and more importantly once bullets start flying, politics goes right out the window. There will always be questions related to the validity of why we are there. What justifiable reason is there for any war anyway? Take away all the facades and all it is are two or more individuals that disagree and whoever has the bigger stick wins the disagreement. Does the fact that they have a bigger stick make them right? Not always.

Jimmy Carter said "War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children."

For me, if I thought our stick was not just, I would not have volunteered to carry it. I've been to Panama, Somalia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan. And I tell you first-hand that I carried our stick with honor and the purpose to bring justice and protect those that needed protected. But, in doing so, I have taken many a life and each night I go to sleep I see their faces and hear their cries and I often wonder if my deeds are misguided and if I have damned myself for all eternity. But this is my choice, and one I have made freely.

As for Iraq, for me, I know why I am there:

My mission is to train Iraqi Police Officers in and around Sadr City, to provide Convoy and Base security, and to provide personnel security as assigned. It is what I have been asked to do, and I will do so proudly and without hesitation.

My original motivation to join the Army was to escape my situation and earn money for college. I wear the uniform now for a different reason:

To protect a way of life I cherish, to protect my friends and family, to liberate others from oppression, not so that they may adopt 'my' way of life, but rather so that they may taste the freedoms that every person deserves, those that so many others have unfortunately taken for granted.

Do I believe that our political system is the best? No, but it works pretty good us. Do I believe that every other country should be a Republic? No. A democratic Republic system only works when the majority of the citizens are middle-class and educated, live in a country with a solid infrastructure and communications system, and religion is not their primary driver. Change any of these and the democratic/republic system will fail.

But, do I believe that all people, regardless of their race, religion, or political system deserve basic rights, security, and freedom from oppression... yes. So much so, in fact, that I have chosen to assist that cause by my profession.

But a 'hero' I am not. Heroes do not bring pain and suffering to others; which I have done though the live I have taken. Heroes are Parents and Teachers... those people that show our youth how to be caring and understanding and give them the knowledge they need to survive in this crazy, mixed-up world. Heroes are health care professional, who have dedicated their waking hours to caring for those that are suffering. Heroes are you... engineers, the people who have dedicate their minds to trying to solve the tangible problems of the world.

I started a side thread entitled "Top 25 - Technological Breakthroughs" and in it I posed a question, what will the next technological juggernaut be that changes how we do and perceive things? What is the next invention going to be that makes the entire world a better place? I do not know what it may be, but I do know that someone on this forum will contribute to it. And they will do it without having to carry a gun, without having to take a life.

The members of this forum are making the world a better place and they do it the way it should be done... with their minds. I am honored to be among you, and your words of encouragement, praise and prayers are received graciously and I will try my best to validate them through my just and honorable actions. Because, yes, I am an ambassador, not just of my country, but of all people that believe in basic freedoms and human rights.

I will try to make some posts while I am in Iraq, but until then... it has been a pleasure to be in your company.

JavaHead, signing off.

JH you are being too humble when you say you are not a hero. In my eyes you are a HERO. What you are doing is not for the sake of your country but for the sake of entire human kind. Actually 9/11 was the real eye opener for the entire world.

I wish you the very best in your future.

I was hoping that it did not come across wrong, but I tend to get a little passionate about this subject.

Too late to catch JavaHead but I just want to say:

May the Lord protect you at all times
May He bless you and everyone you meet
May He touch those who mean to do harm, either to you or anyone else
May He provide for your needs and those around you
May He bring you back safe and sound

'See you soon bro.

Re: A Temporary Sabbatical - Off To Iraq

Good Day Everyone,

Just dropping a quick line to let everyone know that I have returned. This is my first day back in the office so I have a lot of catch-up to do so I will probably not make it back on these forums until next week, after I have had a chance to settle-in.

I am sorry for not posting any while I was in Iraq, but my conditions did not allow for it; I was not in a built-up area. Once a month when we did convoy into an actual base with internet, the limited time I had was spent catching up with my wife and family.

Take care, thank you all for the support, and I will see you all next week when I start reviewing, and contributing to, these forums again.

With kindest regards,

JavaHead

Haha, actually... I did. We flew into Baghdad on a C5 from Kuwait. From there we took Chinooks out to a temporary location. And I remembered your post as we were waiting on the flight line for the Chinook to land. As I got on-board, I was second in line and was sat down right next to a door gunner. Before I sat I gave the door gunner a hug for you. Is that acceptable? He obviously was taken off-guard and gave me quite the look. But I out ranked him by quite a bit so there wasn't too much he could say, haha.

We took Chinooks quite a bit while we were over there. It was about a 70/30 split, respectively, between Chinooks and Blackhawks when we traveled by air.

Ahhhhhh, very Kewl. Thank you!!!! Very acceptable. Well, to me anyway. I can just see the look on that gunner's face.

Brings a tear to this old Hooker's eye and some good memories of hauling troops around.
