What's the Best Vehicle for Carrying a Load Through Deep Mud?

02/02/2009 2:50 PM

We have vehicles for every application. I've only seen one that seemed like it would be any good at working in mud. It was a russian made swamp vehicle with helical rotating pontoons. Are there any other mud designs that can carry say 5 tons, and not get bogged down?

I like the leveling system and I plan to keep it attached, like you said, great way to change tires, and great way to level the RV when camping. I expect there will be a lot of interesting applications for all the normal fire appliances, and the aluminum will defiantly be recycled into the build.

Maybe a JD 9030? Or 9030T?

The JD 9030 would "definitely" float, and maybe even stir and progress in any given bayou, pond or puddle of mud.

Man, look at the volume on these tires:

Nope, saw one of the first stuck to the body pan on a farm near here, the D-8 they sent in to pull it out ended up in the same situation. Gotta love Canadian wet clay.

Do you mean a "Duck" or LARC-V or DUKW or LARC-XV, yeah great stuff but heavy deep mud would present a huge challenge to either if these machines.

It's hard to beat the Icelandic off-road racing series for sheer lunacy. There's more here, select 'videos' at the bottom of the page.

A caravan or convoy of vehicles first being a mud plow followed by a series of gravel laying /grading equipments followed by ground tamping equipments then more gavel grading then heavy load bearing off-highway equipments (Western Star).

I don't suggest putting five tons on it but some many years back we converted a JD 4wd Alligator to run on old snowmobile wide tracks.

Let the air out of the tires, jack it up, fit the tracks over them and re-inflate. Time spent ...5 minutes. Not the fastest gizmo but pretty good in deep snow and muskeg. Went places the Unimog couldn't.

Well I don't know what you are talking about... (do you have pics?) but I wouldn't ride one, and I can't see that they would be good in the snow. I can see that they get places they shouldn't though.

Just fill 'em up with anti-freeze and a saddlebag and they'll follow you anywhere.

John Deere made a six wheel 'golf cart' thingamabob that had on-demand allwd in the rear four wheels. The 'Alligator' version was quite amazing in rough terrain. More so when chum added tracks.

I'll see if I can find some photos. I'm in Dorset at the moment.

in Idaho , i saw a Ford pickup..each wheel was an independent track system ,

the mud was ..it was damn muddy...no problemo.. glad i wasn't on the out side...

i wasn't on the inside either , but far enough away..just inside 100 yards or so..

est speed 10 mph...at least 2 inches of mud higher than the axle...( at the deepest pockets )...

with time and other factors .. rough estimates on speed , but the axles did get covered and kept on ticking..this sight amazed me..

that one has been making to round of the off road internet for some time. Interesting idea but way to heavy and all that former earth mover parts and chain drive stuff is far to unreliable.

very interesting vehicle never the less

What about replacing the sprocket and chain drive setup with hydraulic motors in each wheel. Then the engine only needs to drive a hydraulic pump. The trailing arms would then able to be articulated in a vertical plane also. You would then have adjustable width also. Any value to that?

Hydraulic drives in the wheels would make a big difference, far better control at each corner.the weight issue would have to be investigated, and I suspect aluminum could be used, however I suspect his budget is rather small for such changes.

Interesting exerciser in any case.

If hydraulic drives were used, how would differential action be handled on turns? Would all of the wheels turn exactly the same amount, or could there be a way of proportioning power? That part is still a mystery to me.
