Puzze Pic: What Is This Thing?

03/20/2009 9:24 AM

After much demand, OK, I had one e mail, here is another pic of a thing, the use for which I'm not saying. It's a small section of the item, if no-one has any good ideas after a few days, I'll post an image showing more of the...device.

I think this is a really cool one! Knowing the level of geekiness on this site, I would expect the correct answer in about, oh; say 35 minutes?

I bet its something to do with injecting the jam into a doughnut or something??!!!!

well it looks like its made out of stainless(?) the handle looks like it could be hollow up to the needles..... the doughnut is squashed in to the space and the handle inserts the needles to inject the jam.....

I give up!!!!!

"Item is to be held in left hand, lockdown screw is tightened with right hand"

... don't think this is significant, as it looks like a tool is needed to lock the position. I'd have agreed if it was a knurled knob, or similar.

PlbMak,

Could it be a canvas stretcher for placing a canvas on a frame to get it ready to paint? I was a little overwhelmed by all the posts, and I apologize if anyone has already guessed it.

That is my guess too...........from the "clue"............don't confuse the arts with art.

We know from post #10 its something having to do with art from PlbMak's statement

"Come on guys! You should be thinking in the area of the arts. NOTHINGS illegal there!"

I think its something like this tool used for felting, although it looks like the one we are guessing about is some sort of pliers which would only be useful around an edge on something not so thick. That is all I got, hope someone else has a better idea, or we get more clues.

That's exactly what the nurse used recently to make the holes in the skin before the doctor did the stitching.

But it looks more like the sensor head of a moisture detector probe for wooden poles or handles?

This thing might be used to graft limbs of fruit trees. This holds the graft in place while the wrapping is accomplished.

It is a 'droop begone', the thought of using it cures the problem.

Why does it prick the object it holds with a pattern a bit like this:-

In case the object is small enough for the pins to reach the adjustable plate. Hmmm.

Nope: the pins are aligned above the solid part of the movable plate.

The pattern of holes is really puzzling. The six pins led me to think braille, but there is no braille character with that pattern. If the pins were there just for traction, then the pattern would not need need to so strange.

I'm for the simple solution -- we lynch PlbMak.

That's really weird, even for 1988 ! Around 1986 I actually saw a little old lady ask for cutlery (meaning metal knife and fork, not just a stick for stirring coffee) in a McD's. The look on the face of the kid at the counter was a hoot ! I was expecting a camera crew to pop up from somewhere, but the nice little old lady was entirely (though somewhat naively) serious. It certainly left me speechless, which was a bit of a first.

Thanks to all who took part, I must say it has been enormously satisfying to find something that you lot couldn't identify. After all, there are one or two quite clever people out there.

And now, the answer!

It is in fact a piano tuner's voicing pliers, used to pierce and hence refresh the piano's felt hammers to improve the tone. After a lot of use the felt gets compressed and the piano no longer sounds like it should.

I think if there was a prize for getting closest, it would have to go to frankd20, he was heading in the right direction!
