Looks kinda like 'street furniture' of a squirty variety, or maybe a thing for filling Victorian bathing pools.

Ya put one on the end of each flexible pipe from a Hooka, and half fill it with water (or wine). That way when you've forgotten everything else, no one will be yelling at you to put the F'n clamp on your hose.

I think it's an old siren. Possibly of the crank variety.

Either that or a linguini extruder.

Or...possbily both.

Roll titles and opening credits. Cue theme music.

Imagine a world where PlbMak, Randall and a few others are desperately scratching around in their sheds and garages to see what the weirdest object would be that could ever be posted on CR4. The scene wipes to a dingy carrot barn in a field somewhere to the west of Costessey on the western outskirts of Norwich.

"PlbMak?"

"Yes, Randall?"

"Woss this funny thing you've brought in?"

FX: rattling and clanking noises.

"Oh, English Rose was chucking that out. I thought it 'ud be a rare ol' thing for the CR4 Friday afternoon picture quizzes."

"Well, I've got one like it. Look!"

Randall opens a tattered, stiffened leather suitcase of some vintage and unfurles a similar, strange-looking object wrapped up in an old potato sack. Shaking hands hold it up closely to a non-EEC compliant 40W tungsten light bulb dangling from the ceiling rose on crumbling rubber-insulation twisted twin flex. A large spider scurries away into a corner. A fine cloud of dust rises from the object to be caught by a sliver of sunlight coming in through a gap in the planks in the door. A Breckland draught swirls the dust around as the two gaze at the object in wonder.

"It's beautiful". The two voices are as one. Two spines shiver as the lamp suddenly goes out. PlbMak is first to the electricity meter with a 50p coin.......and then.....

the mood? the suspense?... humf....

who is english rosie? whats that draught thingy, and where do you get a coin operated electrical meter? was that a wartime thing thats sentimental for you kids? I think its all a 'be there' kind of thing.. I mean... squirrels that do math, cats that shoot bow & arrows.. hidden worlds in the closet, and the meaning of life is 42... and how does a cat or squirrel have a stiff upper lip anyway, when its split? what you critters think is funny.. I don't get. I guess I'm more of a Buzz Lightyear kinda guy.

Sounds like you need about five minutes with that inhaler.

You've never fixed a blown fuse with a penney! Just what are your credentials?

English Rose is a respected contributor.

Yes, this is the craziest party I've been to.

Your blow fuse theory is an interesting twist, but I believe the 50p coin in the thriller was to be inserted in the coin slot of a pre-payment meter (something like this:

).

The one shown is a modern version, accepting £1 coins. We all have them in the UK. I suppose you colonists pay with glass beads.

No, no, no. You don't use the coin to PAY for electricity. You unscrew the blown fuse, insert coin in the socket, then screw the blown fuse back in...Then watch the barn burn down.

Who is English Rose?
<flump thud>

Long long ago...she wrote a funny blog which wove in each weeks challenge question...and she is a ....drops voice in reverence... a girlie...her avatar morphed between a Rose and a Pic of her shooting a Korean Recurve Bow <doffs cap in deference>.

She still can be found in these parts when the chilly East wind blows and there's a full moon.

chrisg288 - look at http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/1848/Episode-One-Shocking, and also look up her page. The blog entries will lose something due to [lack of] context, but suffice it to say that English Rose did a great job (IMO) of taking bits and pieces of several then-current threads and weaving them into tapestry.

Aww guys. You say the sweetest things. I have some (now very) out-of-date unpublished episodes that I could type up. It would take some finding of the right Challenge Threads to continue my tradition of linking though! Blimy, I hadn't realised it's nearly 2 years since I last typed up an episode!!!

Now Del <hands over the rest of the salmon>, I know it's lovely sunny weather and the moon is between 3/4 and gibbous (I was born under a gibbous moon), but I thought it was time I checked it to make sure you're all ok and behaving. Is Kris getting enough nuts?

Is that thing some sort of filter. I'm sure I had one on my 1904 Bentley.

I'm with you on the fire hydrant, or maybe a water sprinkler of some kind.

i agree that it resembles a sump. I also seem to remember holding one of these in the palm of my hand a very long time ago but, I may be mistaken.

Regarding scale, I don't think that it is very big perhaps 1~3" this I would guess as it is cast aluminum and any larger, weight would be an issue. As for what it is or what it could be used for, the only logical use I can see would be for misting something like water, at the back there appears to be a connector of some sort. Or depending on what temperatures it could handle maybe it mists pressurized fuel for burning in a furnace. Crematorium furnace nozzle?

Re: What's That Then? (03)

its some sort of steam trap, separator, vent thingy.. pipe goes in the back side there.. maybe a vertical pipe too.. and the air/steam escapes the front port. And to judge its size, because there is reflections on the shiny parts, it can't be too small, and the size of the obvious wear & tear on it, its heavy enough to take a beating... and the hex might just be for holding while pipes are threaded on... there is not valve stem in the top, so it doesn't look like a hydrant.. unless its aluminum, and is a shipboard bilge port. for putting the bilge water out to sea... I dunno.

Could it be a version of those medical vaporisers where in days gone by you might use a small oil lamp to heat a small dish of breathe-easy medical liquid, say Vicks, which then permeated into the surrounding air. If not could be turned into a neat 1-cup coffee percolator!

Re: What's That Then? (03)

Thanks! I had already seen #8 from snygolfgs and #21 from Jaguar (though I'm not certain that it takes an aerosol can), and their answers agreed with an inkling that I'd gotten when I first saw it. So, I simply Googled "shaving cream dispenser" and clicked "images". I had to go through multiple pages, but kept seeing more modern-looking items that could easily be descendants, so I continued. This method was even more successful than I'd hoped!

Guess I'll have to post a couple of items myself one of these days . . . but be warned, I have some things that I cannot identify, myself, and that I have had no luck with elsewhere when posted.

I know what that is. It is an early square. Large stones were put on the table (which was level) the sides of the stone were chipped away untill they were flat against the hanging stone. The result was a 90* angle on the stone.

I have three of them in my old workshop.

I think you might be on to something! thats quite a reasonable time saving device.. something similar to a drop hammer.. what's stopping the mason from using a chisel between the stone work and the swinging stone.. sounds reasonable. good thoughts.. What would the drop stone have to made of to make it a good hammer? granite? that would cut & chip limestone pretty easy wouldn't it?

Very interesting gadget, but we're stuck on the translation. You may know enough to decipher it. Nobody is exactly sure how the darn thing is used, so Ron was making a complement/invitation.

I've developed an unhealthy interest in finding a picture of one in use; Pickles/Mustard/Herrings.....I just have to know now what type of jar it was used to open (non twist, but there must be more to know), and what was in it !
