Give Me a Name!

09/08/2010 11:20 PM

Two months ago today, I started this thread about motorcycle safety. As that discussion evolved, I found myself thinking "What kind of vehicle might give riders a similar sense of excitement and freedom, while giving them greater visibility and safety.

My creative juices boiled away for a while and then over the last two weeks I've poked away at creating the following. I think it is an interesting blend of styles and themes, from antique car racers, to jet fighters, to street legal quads, and animalistic power shapes.

What I'm looking for, other than your welcome comments (positive or not), are your suggestions for names, and any ideas you have for improvements or changes. (It's not perfect. I had trouble with my dashboard.. so that's missing..and keys, light switches, etc.. I was going to put on.. but they are missing for now.) Even though the fuel fill cap is on the right outboard side, I'm imagining it as piped to a tank in the lower center of the vehicle, so the tank is safest in a collision.

I've imagined the steering mechanism to be a wheel that turns 30 degrees max, and it has a combined accelerator/brake system, controlled by the forward/backward motion of the steering wheel. Internally, the whole thing could be 'fly-by-wire'... (hey, I'm not as much of a mechanic as I am a designer... but those details can be worked out if it ever got prototyped) I have put in a 'srpinger' style suspension... just for fun, and to have a bit more 'old school' feel to it.

Enjoy,

Chris

That is awesome! (I'm pissed hahahaha)

I see many of the same influences I had put in my vehicle, plus "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea"

great job on the suspension too. I like the aircooled heads.. it looks like a mature design, and makes me wonder if it was real somehow... I may have to ask.

I wrote to James Chung, and received a reply.

Chris,
Thank you for your kind compliment.
Porco's Savoia racing car was loosely based on combination of the fuselage of his Savoia and Lancia D50.
How did you come across my portfolio? Are you in the entertainment industry as well?

How about calling it "Christhor" like in Tractor.

Combining 2 religions in a vehicle. Thor being the German god of thunder and Christ the, well, you know who.

The Kristor tames it a bit but still a dead give away. Buy the way, Tor is what the Germans yell when they kick a goal. Just another useless piece of information.

It will still be shorter than an SUV, with the same footprint.. why would it be dramatically influenced? weight?.. maybe.. but I wouldn't expect it to go out of control. I'll see what I can do about a render with the sail chopped off. It is mostly a visual thing anyway (with a bit of safety for the rider, and visibility)

you have a tri mast the wheels being the centerboard(s)

crosswinds are one of the reasons you don't see bikes with fully enclosed [dustbin] fairings.

I'm disappointed the Squibble/VisiGuest concept of having the centerpod tilt didn't gain any traction [so to speak]. Have the center pod tilt & move some of the weight to the inside of the corner....

Hi Garthhy,

the centerpod tilt has a lot of traction with me.. I'm actually on the fence, so it has 50% traction. Images are in the works... but it will take a while.

whereas the following changes were easy, although 4 renders takes a couple of hours on my old hand-cranked computer here... (not perfect though) ps... if you want larger versions again.. pm me.

Re: Give Me a Name!

I personally think it would be more appropriate, and technologically easier, to just lean the central body, and to leave the wings and outriggers orthagonal. that makes the lean mechanism just a couple of cylinders and a central hinge..

If the power for each side were local to those wheels, and not in the central body or able to be transmitted by cables, and the steering was 'fly by wire' , then the 'lean' could actually be a translation on a pair of shafts.. so that the entire weight of the central body moves centripetally with the turn. simple actuation for this too..

the images I have shown would be a nightmare to create mechanisms and linkages for. (especially if steering is included)

in response to your comment, I was thinking of simply making the 'wings' (horizontal component) thicker... thick enough to cover the parallel arms... and thereby not limit access any more than it already is.

maybe some 4wd/steering

some hybred regenerative action front electric, rear ICE a mere 25hp per wheel...

Re: Give Me a Name!

you send the sketches... I'll see what I can do to build it.

on a separate note (from the vehicle design of this thread)

I was trying to work out some 3 axis wheel stuff that could lean 45 degrees, and steer, and obviously roll.. all with the axes at the wheel center... I still think it can be done.. but I'm not sure that the wheel needs to tilt, if the body tilts.. I think it would be better to leave the the wheel (and suspension) vertical. that way you don't need rounded tires either.. flat profile tires also gives a broader contact, and actually makes it easier to accomplish a central steering axis (kingpin)

waiver. these images are just exploratory.. conceptual. they sorta work.. but not quite. I would love to be able to design an electric wheel.. that has power, braking, steering, and rolling (and possibly leaning) all in one package..

I had a complicated "sliding box frame within a box frame" system in mind to go with it, to enable... no drawings.

what do you think... anyone?

NOW you have my attention- only I am probably thinking a bit bigger than you. Switch modes- unicycle. The cockpit is in the center, gyro-stabilized. If we close the sphere, the entire spere becomes our single "wheel" and we can turn or roll or tilt at any desired angle (even upside down- whatever bakes your cookies). I once saw something like this for calm waters, with a bicycle inside to provide power...

I'm just saying there is a difference between leaning the central body ONLY, and leaning the central body AND the outriggers.

Squimvie.... ummm no. I just googled that too.. no references... so you will have to provide the reference and explanation for us slower moving mammals. If the "Squi" refers to Squrriel.... well I don't understand how "mvie" refers to cat?? shouldn't it be CatSqui or SquiFeli? (reset)

On April 25, 1928, Lockhart's Stutz Black Hawk Special streamliner (named for the Indiana town that was home to Stutz's factory [2]) turned a warmup run of 198.29 mph (319.1 km/h), with his first official pass at 203.45 mph (327.40 km/h), [2] well below the 207.552 mph (334.007 km/h) mark set earlier in the year by Ray Keech in his 81 litre (4178ci) Triplex Special. [2][3]

On Lockhart's return pass the Black Hawk Special cut a tire (probably on a seashell), went out of control and tumbled violently across the sand, throwing Lockhart from the car and killing him instantly. [1][2]

Here's a link to John R. Bayer's website. He's researching the story of Frank Lockhart.

http://stutzblackhawk.tripod.com/index.html

Click on "Frank's Story". Interesting read. Seems to bear some similarity to our chrisg. Both good looking creative young guys with a crazy streak. Watch out for seashells, chris.

Oh, yeah. Back on topic for a moment. How about "Blackhawk's Ghost"?

Ed, 34point5,

Thank you.

very interesting stories and history. I love it.

I think the Golden Arrow has some features (outrigger style) that is also very similar. I love the streamlining...

I'm thinking we should have a thread on the art and science of vehicle stability... any interest?

Yes. A serious subject for land speed racers. Generally dealt with by brute force (aerodynamic downforce) methods or ever trickier shock absorber/spring technology. Fine for the F1 and track racing folks,I suppose. But I'd like to hear what other folks are thinking or have discovered on the subject. Particularly with respect to active suspensions and other methods based on control system theory. Also the effects of aerodynamic and road surface imposed forces where there appears to be a real dearth of research.

In 'land speed', I think you only need to look at Donald Campbell's Blue Bird approach compared to Craig Breedlove's "avoid all that" approach. One is a "car" and the other "fast".

Interest? Yes, absolutely! Time? Well, you can imagine how I am struggling for that at the moment.

Drive a Citroen D21 from the seventies and you will get an idea what I call vehicle stability. Ice, snow, rough terrain or speed combined with comfort, I'd have one if it would still be around.

The Maserati collaboration must be one of the most beautiful cars ever built. You never know, I might have one one day

Looking at it helps Eff all, just get into one and enjoy, Ky.

probably true... how about a blue lizard? more my favourite color.

I don't doubt they found some orangy lizards... but I will go with the crocodile evidence. I think that earth used to be much more watery, and subsequently, all the lizards should have had 'swamp skills' and swamp coloring.

Re: Give Me a Name!

Always early, never late.

I thought you were referring to this one:

An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess."
He bent over, picked up the frog, and put it in his pocket.
The frog spoke up again and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn back into a beautiful princess and stay with you for one week."
The engineer took the frog out of his pocket, smiled at it and returned it to the pocket.
The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want."
Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket.
Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?"

The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that's cool."

You know who, Ky.

Re: Give Me a Name!

09/27/2010 2:11 PM

we both received this one last week... (the above joke was #8)

Understanding Engineers:

One (my favourite)

Two engineering students were biking across a university campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?

The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike, threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want." The first engineer nodded approvingly and said, "Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit you anyway."

Two

To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

Three

A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!" The priest said, "Here comes the green-keeper. Let's have a word with him." He said, "Hello George, what's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?" The green-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. That's a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime." The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight." The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything he can do for them." The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?"

Four

What is the difference between mechanical engineers and civil engineers?
Mechanical engineers build weapons. Civil engineers build targets.

Five

The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?"
The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?"
The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"
The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

Six

Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body.
One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints."
Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections."
The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"

Seven

Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

the frame would probably tie itself in a knot, the 1st time you cranked the throttle hard

I had a 500 years ago, it felt like it had a hinge in the middle, then when you would let off it would do a nasty headshake. I quickly learned to be either on the gas or the brakes
