What Is This Device?

10/30/2010 11:55 PM

I found this device while walking my dog. It was lying on the ground, red LED blinking. It's about the diameter of a dime.

It blinks only in daylight and quits at night. Seems to be some sort of uv detector.

There is a black or dark uv-colored LED on the board on the edge opposite the red LED. I presume this the sensor.

It's powered by 2 x 3V CR1220 batteries.

Anyone know what this might be; and why is it self-contained with it's own power supply?

P.S. sorry for the crummy pic, it's a function of a crappy camera.

(C2H5)2O. Is a highly flammable liquid with a low boiling point, a characteristic odor and was once used as a general anesthetic.

Recreational use

Ether, mixed with ethanol, was marketed in the 19th century as a cure-all and recreational drug, during one of Western society's temperance movements. At the time, it was considered improper for women to consume alcoholic Squibles at social functions, and sometimes ether-containing drugs would be consumed instead.

A cough medicine called Kris/Del Drops was marketed at the time as one of these drugs, and contained both ether and alcohol in its capsules. Ether tends to be difficult to consume alone, and thus was often mixed with Del like ethanol for recreational use. Ether may also be used as an inhalant.

In the 19th century and early 20th century ether drinking was popular among Polish pheasants . It is a traditional and still relatively popular recreational drug among CR4awl. It is usually consumed in a small quantity (interweb, or "dot") poured over bath water with sugar or orange juice in a shot glass.

(note; steps to minimise plagiarism have been taken in the above)

no wonder I don't understand...

I don't consume any accelerants... except Timmies coffee.

on another note... while perusing the map between bristol and wherever... I wondered; Why isn't there a big canal connecting east and west... in a straightish line? I see a big highway (M4?)... but the canal system doesn't seem to quite make it all the way.. or maybe I just got lost around fairford airport (dunfield?)(military airport?).

IMHO, straight is pretty boring (but don't quote me on that ).

Regarding the link: don't know whether you get the same as me, but if I'm on a map I get:

... and clicking Link gives ...

... a ready-made link to copy & paste into a post:

(somewhere in Alberta by way of Illustration)

Regarding the condition of the water - it's clean (not "Mountain Stream" clean, but pretty clean). I'd happily eat any fish I caught[1] in the Thames, the Kennet or the aforementioned canal.

[1] There are some pretty strict rules, but sadly not enough enforcement.

  • You must have a rod license (need to pay for this)
  • You must have permission to fish the particular stretch of water (may need to pay for this)
  • The fish must be big enough[2]
  • The limit on the number of fish taken in a session is not exceeded

[2] Here's the Envioronment Agency minimum fish size list for Thames Valley region:

• No person shall take away from any waters within
the area any fish of a kind and of a size less the
following:

Barbel 40cm
Chub 30cm
Rudd 20cm
Bleak 10cm
Gudgeon 13cm
Tench 25cm
Bream 30cm
Perch 22cm
Brown Trout 25cm
Carp 30cm
Pike 60cm
Dace 15cm
Crucian Carp 18cm
Roach 18cm
Grayling 25cm

Hi John,

thanks for the excellent info...

here is me. although I've learned not to park at this T interesection as I've been run into twice while parked...

Me, I did not get the fishing genes in the family. (I can hardly spell fish let alone catch one ) . My brother owns a fishing lodge in Northern saskatchewan, with about 30km by 30km gov't lease... 2 lodges actually, one here, and one here. (extremely remote if you ask me.) it is an epic journey to travel there overland... (boatride at end)

I'm more interested in having water to drink when the world comes to an end in 2012. (tinfoil hat)

Maybe it is a "shocking device" as in the price of those button cell batteries is shocking.

Maybe it was part of those attractors used in grocery stores, that project out into the isle, blinking away to notify you of the coupons or savings offered (with the exception of button cell batteries).perhaps they shut down at night when the store is closed and all the meat is sleeping.......

Well... this turned out tougher (and funnier) than I figured. But for me personally an education -- grammar, aliens, time travel, ied's and iud's, all from a little circuit that blinks only in light. Who woulda thunk it!

But in my search I did come across an interesting simple to use online circuit emulator. It's at least inspired me to try my hand at circuit emulation.

Find it here, enjoy.

You're welcome.

Btw, it took me a while to figure out how to save a circuit even though it was explained in the directions. I finally figured out you gotta go to file >> export, then copy the series of numbers & letters which appear, then paste them into an application (I used Notepad), name that file and save it.

To recover the saved file, copy the saved data from Notepad, and using file>>import, paste it into the java applet.

It simply was a matter of overcoming a pre-conceived habituated method of just naming and saving a file.

Has it been finally 100% identified?

If not, I still think my (early) guess was on the mark......anyone agree?

Re: What Is This Device?

I for one, maybe the only one, would be interested to know what the object is. I am not learned in electronics, so the first thing that comes to mind is a receiver to turn on a ...radio?

Then comes to mind... Why all the ridicule? Am I not in tune with the true meaning of this forum? I enjoy some of the joking but why not joke and give an on-topic answer, too?

I would like to see the comments separated as on-topic an off-topic as determined by the one submitting the post. Then when I am interested in comic or science I could choose.

it doesn't have the right parts for a receiver. It has the right parts for powering the led and making it flash, as well as sensing the uv light. that is pretty much all it can do. (Unless there is hidden circuitry somewhere.) The only question is, why would you want to flash an led in either light or dark?

Its a "Throwee/Throwie" as has already been described by someone else here.

Built sometimes with, sometimes without a magnet on the back, depending upon whether its to be used on a steel sheet or on a lawn or other non magnetic surface....

Simple circuit, can flash for many days with new batteries.....sounds like this one was wrongly made with the resistor and the light detector reversed, as it should only flash in the dark and not in the light!! Maybe thats why it was thrown away......

There is enough info on the web for anyone to check this out.....

I don't think it's a "throwie". Unnecessarily complex. I have made many "throwies" and they typically consist of just a 10mm LED taped to a battery. Just sayin'.

I have e another suggestion for your consideration. In the larger food stores, there are shelf displays that offer you a coupon to save some money on a particular item. In order to draw your attention to the coupon dispenser, they have a small slow flashing red LED to catch your eye. This would do exactly what your device does. No need to have the light flashing away at night when the store is closed, and lights are off. I'm just saying.

It could be some sort of alert signal for owners of white dogs. A gadget that fixes to the collar. White dogs are hard to see on a bright day, but it wouldn't be such a problem at night.

Was anybody with a leash but no dog (or maybe just 'lost' looking dog) seen in the vicinity ?

Well I must commend you back !

This is most excellent; For years our government have blathered about 'dangerous dogs' (Pitbull and the like <well cross-like, which makes them hard to define>), and what to do. Having them wear brightly coloured balloons would be an excellent way of warning the public. Filled with hydrogen it would also mean they could not chase people, and has the added advantage that any stray floating dog could be dealt with by means of a cigarette lighter. Expect a new item in the KrisDel™ Spring Sale !

That's the EU for ya, Poles everywhere. Not quite true, many of those working in Britland have gone home because the money is better and the people a bit nicer. Bad enough that we don't get cute Ozzie gals in bars anymore, but losing Poles is rather crushing .

I'm not on first-name terms with the local fishing warden, but as far as I'm concearned you can visit Hythe canal and fill yer boots. Damn big things at the right time of year, though a tad boney. It'd be better to try a spot of mackrelling - dunno anything about fishing, but in season it's amazing how many people can pull out; line goes out and they whip back half a dozen..again and again. It's awesome how much free food you can pull out, and because it's sea you don't even need a rod license. The surface of the water shimmers, there are that many fish shoaling.

erm...enjoy cod & chips from the local chippy tonight

The local fishing around Auckland hasn't been too bad recently, particularly as we are having these lovely warm days for a change, as we head towards summer. Most of my mates who weekend fish are usually the tag and release types.

Here is last weekend update;

Now there's a very good reason to translocate (emigrate) down your way (the fishin' ).

I'll eat any kind of fish[1], but I won't take undersize fish from any water.

[1] Except those known to be toxic - AFAIK, there are none to be found in UK inland waters.

Can't argue about that scenery. Pity about the wait for the whole vid to load before starting to play on the Speight's site. Good enough, tho'.

Can't come over for a few days - gotta give my elder daughter away first. (Prolly have to sell the other one to get the air fare).

It was left there for you by a secret agency.( So secret they do not even know what they are doing).
They knew when and where you walk your dog.

The blinking lights were just to get your attention.

When you touched it,it injected a nano sized tracker under your skin, and you cannot detect or remove it.It will migrate to the core of your brain, where it will anchor itself.

Attempts to remove it will be fatal.

You will be tracked to within millimeters for the rest of your life.Get used to it.

All of your thoughts will be analyzed for any potential violent content, and a sharp headache will result, causing you to lose the thought process, and a calm peaceful memory will replace it.

And this is just a small part of what it will do.

Of course m,I am just being paranoid, none of that could ever happen.....??

Yea,Yea.I know; I ought to write sci fi stories.
