Not to be confused with the measure of average force per
unit area of a surface, the stress in this case refers to what makes you
exhausted, irritable, and unable to concentrate.
Symptoms of Stress
Since no two people are identical, it makes sense that no
two people respond to stress in the same way or with the same intensity. The
American Institute of Stress has a compiled list of 50 common signs and symptoms.
Stress can range from a minor reaction, like frequent blushing, to more
pressing reactions like having difficulty breathing or experiencing hives. The
effects of stress can attack every area of your body. You may lose your hair,
experience headaches, irritability, insomnia, muscle pain, and more.
Ways to Reduce Stress
There are a variety of ways to reduce stress, but
just as different people exhibit dissimilar symptoms, different people also
react to uniquely given certain strategies. Some helpful stress reducers
include jogging, meditation, yoga, tai chi, massage therapies, autogenic
training, self hypnosis, and acupuncture.
Preventing Stress
It is much easier to prevent problems before they occur than
to deal with them once they have risen. Make sure to maintain a proper diet,
get enough sleep, avoid overdosing on caffeine, and take time to relax.
Identifying the sources of stress in your life is the first step to avoiding
the stressor or reducing its impact on your stress levels.
Some prescription medications have been found to reduce
stress, but long-term use of can result in dependency and can interact with
other drugs that you may be taking.
How do you deal with stress? Do you focus on prevention or
the cure when it comes to stress?
