What do you do when you are not on this Forum?

Posted May 26, 2007 6:30 PM by photonicgirl
Pathfinder Tags: careers hobbies interests jobs

Hello all.

I belong to several online forums and it's alway fascinating to hear what people do for a living and in their spare time. The most frequently asked questions are, "Where do you work, what's your specialty, do you have a dream job, and what you do for fun?"

Do tell all!

Jules

"...Tanquam ex ungue leonem..."

A.- Just as rubbing (smearing?) a lion?

B.- Just as dressing a lion???

Please make yourself clear!

Ab ove maiori discit arare minor. Res, non verba!

Here is one account of the "...Tanquam ex ungue leonem..." quote, should you have the patience to read:

"...Of unequaled mental ability during his entire adult life until his death at age 85, Newton's powers are legendary. It is often told, for example, how later in his life a problem in mathematical physics posed by the great mathematician, Bernoulli, was forwarded to Newton from the Royal Society. The problem, to determine the curve of minimum time for a heavy particle to move downward between two given points, had baffled the famous 18th century mathematicians of Europe for over six months. Receiving the problem in the afternoon, Newton solved it before going to bed.

Although the solution was sent to Bernoulli anonymously, he is said to have exclaimed upon reading it, "tanquam ex ungue leonem -as the lion is known by its claw" in reference to his recognizing Newton's method..."

- There (Newton Vindicated: Sir Isaac Newton and Einstein's Theory of Relativity).

"...Bravado accounts for little in the realm of fact..."

If you insist then .Yuval isn't around to figure who was interested in Brachistochrone (he would recall me mentioning it ). I was having fun to see how easily people can spot me with minimum writing in a post. 'Guests' had been puzzling me for some time , so I was wondering how easy it is to spot writing style (if there is no major intent to deceive). It's reasonably possible , but not exactly 100 % , so is in effect of no use as intel (?). Even if things like spelling mistakes are repeated a 100% ID can never be made. Such absurd diversions of thought amuse me. It's kind of like DNA testing for forensics. Did you hear the recent case about 2 guys involved in a paternity case - ID was not possible because they were identical twins ! Ha. Things like that illustrate the weakness of DNA proof. The odds of mis-identification are not so long as we are led to believe. It's the weekend so I'm feeling more trivial than usual.

Yes, but the number of identical twins is so small that it's just background noise. On the other hand, in Texas, if one was accused of a murder, they'd execute them both just to make sure.

Conjoined twins would be a problem (Texas excepted )

So at 99.9999% accuracy , about 50 people in the UK alone could pass for me !!

"Guest"

What about choosing a name, and start participating in the forum?: you are welcome!

Once you have signed in, please explain me what the heck the statemet "Broken Line 2 - optimal solution in the class of two-link piecewise lines with free breakpoint (two-parametric family" means.

Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm a doc and only learned the ABC's in Maths!

I have drawed a curved line between A point and B Point, but it was said to me this is not the shortest way netween both! Is this true?????

S-u-r-p-r-i-s-e ! Just me fooling about.

Once you have signed in, please explain me what the heck the statement "Broken Line 2 - optimal solution in the class of two-link piecewise lines with free breakpoint (two-parametric family" means. = Purple and Yellow.

The ball will reach it's target quicker if it rolls along a cycloid curve. The broken lines (sorry , purple & yellow ) are a stage ahead of a straight line ramp - They are simpler to analyse than a curve , and more readily prove the fact that a straight line is not the fastest path. Th curves shown in the simulation take no account of friction etc.

I started a thread some place on the topic. If I go now looking for a link I may loose what I've just typed. Wah. Check my profile or search 'Brachiostochrone' (I mis-spelled it I think )

Dear Guest (or is this a bouncing hairball in disguise?)

Bernoulli said ungue, when he should have said unguis (claw, paw, nail).

No wonder he could not solve the mathematical problem!

"...Res, non verba!..." - Was plain rude of you, and artificially stuck there.

I'm not sure if asking "for facts, not for words" is very rude, or artificially stuck

Nemo me impune lacessit ! (No one provokes me with impunity)

Good night!

Yuval is definetively wrong: there is not a single F*## Labrador genes in his body!

I did not map his genome. It may be a pure Schnautzer that only looks like a mixed-labrador.

Don't take it personally.

It's only a Schnautzer-Labrador-mix looking mutt.

Yup, by your reaction, it comes clear across: Your mutt is probably a Labrador with some little Schnauzer mixed in it (Let me guess: Gene-Spliced by Plasmid-Culture?).

"...It is 22.30 down here: what time is it in Israel? 5 AM???..."

It is 2007.

Is it that in Argentina you're all sent to bed at dusk by the authorities?

Here in Israel, we are permitted to sleep whenever we feel like it, an some are even allowed to surf the web at night.

The web! At night!

Who would have ever thought it to come true one day?

Were you told there that in other countries it had already come true?

"...It is 22.30 down here: what time is it in Israel? 5 AM???..."

It is 2007.

My guess was only 30 min wrong: when 10,30 in BA; it is 4,30 in Tel Aviv. Only problem is we are 1 year ahead!

The web! At night!

Local authorities are very kind to us, they let us surf from 8 to 10 PM, provided we do it in the "God save Argentina" official website. Here we can see how happy all of us are, as well as how stinky world outside our boundary's is!

After 10 PM lights are switched off and all of us go to bed (before falling asleep is is advised to say a prayer wishing long live and wisdom to our beloved rulers). Our rulers stay awake to protect us from any harm.

(By the way have you seen the film Brazil -ca. 1980)????

I can´t recall if it was in this forum or at The Lancet´s that I was asked to explain relationship between prostate and frequent night micturition.

I´ll check this and will be back asap.

Hi Europium!

Not a single word of what I stated is true!

This is just cause Yuval has been provoking me (see reply 265), by saying the most weird things (both of us are just kidding). As his statements are crazy, mine are even more.

Sorry. For a moment I thought you were speaking...

Well, about some 30 years ago we resembled one of those republics (during military dicatorship). Things were not as bad as I depicted it on the weird "chat" with Yuval, but pretty close.

Now we are allowed to go to bed a bit later! (this is another stupid joke!)

Best regards, Cosme

The guy with the unibrow is Bert the straight man, not Ernie the top banana.

You're absolutely right. OTOH, judging that Bert & Ernie are practically inseparable, Max was probably the product of a Ménage à trois.

Yes, it is an Uzi. One of several, in fact. Lefty collects guns. All kinds. And dogs. All kinds. Has a great taxidermist.

I'm also a Southpaw, and I can vouch for him. He really is that good. He's ambidexterous, in fact. Here he is as a mere youth, making sport of the the neighbor's shitzu:

Hi Europium,

THIS way of discussion is totally unfair: I cannot compete with your excellent pic's

This is the only "funny" thing I can manage to do with an image (provided what I did is funny!)

Wow Kris,

you are my hero! How did you manage to do this??? Have you already got the Beta version of Corel Photoshop 2009?

Did you take private lessons with Andy Warhol?

Is this his famous polarization technique?

I need your advise: do you thing I have any chance of getting an image of Max targetting at a pucky cat made by Europium, provided both of us do him some sweet talking?

Believe me , I really know nothing of graphics etc. I just copied the dog to windows paint and presses the button for 'Invert Colours' . There are people round here who could have him doing all sorts of stuff - morphing , talking, walking etc. Just chuck a copy into a basic art program , press the buttons and see what happens . Personally I would kidnap Lefty into paint and do something simple using 'hand' drawing tools. Not that I would ever suggest mischief of course . . Best ask the owner first if you do that. Perhaps Max could be cut 'n' pasted into the cockpit of a really cool fighter jet ?

Hmm...how can we be sure that these guys aren't sent by Yuval? Suspicious..

Sorry guys , but I am far to fly to stay in one place. Morphing sure messes up references to my avatar ! Ha ! I must have some kind of sixth sense cos I changed before looking in here. I do always dress though - some of the Guests are fairly transparent though. Matching phrases and mis-spells can be fun , but it always leaves an annoying bit of doubt. Only the good Admin folk know for sure. Oooh ! CR4 meets room 101 . How about members who sign in as 'guest' and write in the style of another .. Naauuughhhty. Believe me , I really know nothing of graphics etc...

I KNOW!

'was just pulling your leg with the Beta version... No clue if such program will EVER exist!!!!!

I spent hours and hours working on Max's image, and only got a ssttrreecchheed dog image

Life is unfair, here it is 7Am, just got up to have my breakfast, while you are already ready for dinner! Yuval is probably having a drink at a terrace of a fancy hotel looking at the read sea, and Vermin is still sleeping!

Here is something definitively wrong!

I will propose to move Greenwich to Ascension Island: this way we will be less hours apart! Can this be a subject for a new topic?

If not in Ascension, it just could be "somewhere" This new time measurement system would become a bit confusing at the beginning, but mankind will certainly adapt to it soon (ie: depending where a given person guesses this zero time zone is, it could be 3 AM or 2 PM in the same city (quite convenient, isn't it?) Imagine you are late for arriving home at a party: when you angry wife complains at you for arriving a 10 PM, you simply say: baby, I use Kalamazoo's time; therefore arrived 2,15 hours earlier than you asked me to!

Please let me know you thoughts!

The 2009 did sort of make my leg feel a slight pull. I have a hopeless ability with dates , and times are a complete irrelevance to me. These things only exist in my confused mind as 'Kris time + x' . I am somewhat diverted by Viennese construction work. I don't like gondoliers, bad songs , or cakes , or badly made ice-cream products. Thus my confused brain has to link different sorts of things together in an apparently mad way. The beautiful whole will be so sublimely built you will never know the detail because it works so well.

There are some rocks in the Atlantic. I say we let Disneyland have them . They'd surely find some use for them , and would change time zones to suit all with their corporate might. Two bald men/women have no need of a comb hmm ? One can only hope some dreams come true.

It's not a 9mm, as the size of the rounds make for a gun that's too big for a cat. But there's more than one way to skin the dog, so to speak, so Lefty bought himself a machine shop and built his own heaters from scratch. Even had a few gold-plated just for photo-ops. But he really had to innovate with the ammo. Like DU sabot rounds, copper-jacketed hollowpoints filled with metallic sodium, and water-activated incindiaries, to name a few. It's pretty fun to watch.

Why be expensive when you can just let loose non-pollution, low-cost predator to do the job..

It is even eco-friendly. A green solution every time... just watch out, they bite.

Not Falklands - the Falklands are islands some distance away owned by the UK (where Brunel's SS Great Britain spent many years as a hulk).

Terra del Fuego is owned jointly by Chile and Argentina.

Dear English Rose,

"apparent" confusion from Yuval between Tierra del Fuego and Falklands (Malvinas) is just a joke from this guy to pull my leg; as he knows I am an "Argie"

Best regards, Cosme

Re: What do you do when you are not on this Forum?

06/04/2007 8:11 AM

Well I guess this it is high time for me to answer the original post, I guess I kinda got caught up in other's conversation .

Well, I am a research assistant working in a research and development lab specializing in palm oils, though recently we have been diversing our operations into aerochemicals (chemical waste management) and biotechnology.

My specialty is doing whatever needs to be done from experiments to repairs of equipments. It's funny really, my qualifications is in mechanical but somehow I got into chemical engineering.

My dream job is to built a home-built gas turbine and attached to my car or house . For those who have seen the effect of 747 backwash, I can't wait the moment when someone comes to tailgate me again...

Now what do I do for fun..

Building RC planes from scratch..

From the plans, down to the final rigging..

Though just one has successful flight history..

When I'm not on this forum, I guess, I'm either working, eating, sleeping (a favorite past time for me recently), reading online comics from Japan, or playing Neverwinter Nights.

I guess that isn't anything worth mentioning.

Oohh.. I know, one more thing, I like to chase some poor cat..and squirrels too...

P.s. can anybody spot the plane in the second pic?

Yup he's a fellow aenar dropping by on his way home, but not long he starts to claim that he feels left out cause neither the plane or me would allow him into our "conversation". So he left soon after.

It's actually nice to be able to say if you fly a model aeroplane in the Silicon Valley, you run a risk of getting it snatched out of the air by a raptor. They're making a marginal comeback.

There's a very wide, empty field behind where I work. The field is loaded with chubby ground squirrels, and these two red tailed hawks (about the size of eagles) that have made it their hunting ground. They will soar in and then hover, perfectly still - no movement whatsoever. Then, the dive del las muerte!

You are now carrying my child - don't ask, it is zee mystery of zee dance!

Lovely plump ground squirrels perhaps.

You'e so , so dark , dark and mysterious. Like a .bat. No , not the pretty flighty creatures , the ones pawed by numerous sweaty hands on pitches all over the world. You're love child will be cherrished - I am a slut and adore maintainance payments. We are so well matched my little fluff-ball. Your monthly invoice is being prepared darling. Kris

This thread seems to have gone esoteric.

For example, is there any benefit in using stale urine instead of fresh urine when filling one's boots? And is the stale urine necessary only due to the fact that it might take several attempts to actually produce enough personal urine to fill a boot? Could not one line up a few friends to provide sufficient fresh stuff?

Hmm. Intersting. What else you do when you are not on this forum?

Mark ,

I think the thread started off esoteric ! I notice that some people would like to see this thread 'serious' , but (to use a phrase ) you've got to be joking. If I wanted to go to some mind numbingly crass 'networking' place I'd have to ask the boss if I could wipe my brown nose first. Then I'd have to figure who was 'better' or 'less' than me. Also I'd have to puzzle over whether a person was who they claimed to be. Boring. Better to exchange information and learn etc without bothering who anybody is , and have a laugh along the way. Taking things too seriously would be like the pompous suggestion a while back of having a minimum qualification for membership (I joke not) -presumably the proposer had their own level in mind.

Not having a go at you Mark , I just found an excuse to get something off my chest.

Guess what , I still never gave anything away !

There is a local building , curiously called a 'Pub'. I am told that it is run by a poor fuller who wishes to collect raw ingredients. I try my utmost to provide my bit , but he insists on charging for the copious amount of ale I have to drink in my charitable endeavour for him. The strange thing is that he already keeps numerous ready made stocks labelled 'Lager'. Life is a mystery.

Kris
