It's only about a 5% addition to the mostly wood pulp absorbent pad.

SAP does not readily biodegrade, so in the soil improvement context, an advantage. But the questions remaining are if the nappy % and SAP type is suitable/useful, and such as; there may be dioxins in the chlorine bleached wood pulp variety.

Interestingly, there seems some 'dispute' as to if the "bio degradable" nappy's will - due to the level of 'food additives' - meaning preservatives - in the 'load'.

Spooky World when diaper + kid shit = toxic waste

Have you ever changed a diaper/nappy? Some of that stuff could power the ITER.

As my wife would say

Well you could do that..

the logistics would just kill ya [have you priced a barge trip to Haiti lately]

what color would the recycling bin be?

no reason you couldn't just shred the whole shebang & adjust the ph with a little sulphuric or koh & spread it out in the sun.

Irradiation is really cool but would probably be a little pricey.

Would that kill the toxoplasmosis bug ? Mind you, as the French already have 80% infection rate, you'd have no worries shipping untreated stuff there.

Actually several farmers in Bakersfield have made a thriving business of composting humanure

The "biosolids" are sourced from over the hill in LA [sewage treatment plants]

There can be issues with the heavy metals

I learned this from a local nursery & articles in the local news

This is the brand

I can Identify the product in the store by looking at the ingredients list: recycled biosolids

One potential area for end use would be Haiti,

How prescient of you, given the current troubles there.

It's 46o, raining, gray and dreary,I feel like I've just landed at Newark. Which means, IT'S PICTURE POSTING TIME!!!!!!!!

I'm so f***in' lazy I might not even get the energy up to caption them. We'll see. No, I'm not going to number them, just pretend they're shiny mersenne primes or some other math mumbo-jumbo.

Nice sea turtle tats. Had a backyard full of box turtles in New Orleans; the ex is in charge of them now. Some may find it difficult to reconcile having pets and eating the same beastie prepared elsewhere. I have no such reservations. Will try anything and will eat anything (stop right there, Pack), except sea cucumbers.

Weather Report Post

01/09/2010 1:21 PM

It's snowing in the Orlando area, two hours north of my twenty.

It's in the forties here and has been raining continuously since 9:00PM Friday

On 01//1977 it snowed in West Palm Beach, the only time on record that it snowed in the Bahamas. Robert E. Lee's Birthday and another person's birthday, so guess.
That winter was cold here , I know they had gynormous snow drifts in Buffalo, massive influx of yankees , no not Thurman, next year.

I've warned the neighbors and the family that it might get down to Donner Party cold here tonight, advised them to use discretion, they HAVE been warned , supposed to be possibility of snow here tonight at 2;17AM.

If it snows I'll get the neighbor to take nekkid pictures of me throwing snowballs at the police, will post after my release.

A horse* enters that same bar, and asks the barman for a shot of whiskey. Drinks it, asks "how much", answered "five bucks", pays, and turns to leave. As it is near the door, the barmans says "Excuse me, Yo, Horse, excuse me". The horse turns, and the barman says "You know, I serve in this bar for thirty-five years, and this is the first time I see a horse drinking whiskey". The horse replies "With your prices, it's probably the last time you'll ever see any of us here"

Sorry, I don't do quick. I'm an old sixties hippie.

Must be Hengland, they're driving on the wrong side of the road&speaking cockney

I just wanted to alert all members to the danger of leaving yard maintenance machinery and musical instruments unchaperoned.

And at 9:08 in the vid, the stewardess asks the pilot about the size of his organ.

Result of riding lawn mower f***ing a Hammond B3 organ.

How uncanny! This topic just appeared in the January issue of GlobalSpec's Environmental Technology newsletter. How clever of the writer.

Diversions . . . This Car is Planed

This dandy little sports car is street-legal in Japan, has a top speed of 80 km/h, and is made from wood. The Maniwa is hand-built by wood craftsmen and features a motorcycle-like handlebar steering system. The single front seat is for the driver but two passengers are accommodated on a bench in the back. It costs $44,000 U.S., and you probably wooden want to smoke in it.

A joke is the right answer, to the wrong question, or the wrong question to the right answer.

Off topic is like: Can I stick a Mac Harddrive, in my HP, and get a Hybrid?

To which someone might rejoin, Lettuce on a Big Mac, is wholesome.

From Innocentive, Inc. http://www.innocentive.com/

Lightning as an Alternative Energy Source(#9127673)

We seek ideas for capture, transfer, switching and storage of electrical lighting discharges as a potential alternative energy source.

The four subsystems will be judged separately and a portion of the award will be dedicated to each subsystem. Solvers are eligible to address one or more of the subsystems for the award on each.

This is an Ideation Challenge so your creativity and experience qualify you to participate in this Challenge. Responses are expected to be about 2-3 written pages not including figures, however there is no strict limit on length.

Deadline: April 19, 2010

Reward: $30,000

Funny that,

I saw that challenge a couple of days ago

I remember a discussion about this subject somewhere around here?

I don't think the density of energy is very good

what location has enough lightning strikes in small enough area to harvest enough power, to make sense.

I seem to remember that while there is a buttload of voltage, the duration very short & consequently not as much power as one would think

conversion of a million volts to something that can be thrown on the grid, is gonna be expensive. & scarry as hell

I suppose you could just throw a really tall tower up & harvest the potential of the atmosphere. I suppose this would be something to think about when constructing a space elevator.

There was also a discussion of how much harvesting wind energy would slow down the rotation of the earth.

LIGHTNING BOY Post

01/26/2010 10:46 PM

Two things:

1) as Garthh mentioned about the space elevator, it seems a natural to generate or transmit power, especially if it's made out of those carbon buckyballs. One of the shuttle flights demonstrated the "potential" for generating electricity by dangling a wire, not sure of the physics involved.

B) Florida is the lightning strike capitol of the world, if you look closely at the seal on the state flag , you will notice it represents a 9-iron melted onto the forearm of a golfer.

And another thing; I know, I know I said two things, but I wanna make sure I get a frickin' Laser on my space elevator, dambit.

Wow a shuttle and wire - an' all we had previous was a kite, key and jar

LASER is a big ask Lightning Boy - the central cable and all.

But if you had one you could conceal in a clear plastic bag.......

Or maybe in a Coke bottle?
