He did indeed go to my school (er-hem!). He was a year or so away from me (not sure which way - I certainly don't remember him), & he got hisself fast-tracked to Edinburgh Uni (I went to St Andrews).

Buffalo head falls, traps man snoozing in recliner

June 11, 2010

ISLAMADORA, Fla. (AP) — Most people would only worry about being crushed by a buffalo out in the wild. It turns out the animals can be dangerous when they're mounted on walls, too.

Monroe County Sheriff's deputies say a man in the Florida Keys had to call 911 when a stuffed water buffalo's head mounted on a wall fell on him and pinned him as he slept in a reclining chair. The sheriff's office said the call came in early Friday from the man, who could only yell his address and tell operators he had been trapped.

The man had apparently woken up when the buffalo head fell on his lap. The head was too heavy for him to lift, but the man was able to reach for his cell phone and call for help. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Radiolab episode for the discerning listener that appreciates the subtle diff-

erence between a merely good ape and a great ape.

Also , I believe, that there is a difference between great apes and great Danes.

If it wasn't for almost good enough Danes, poor King Harold might have made a better showing soon after against William the Intruder IMHO.

Apes>minkees

Great Danes? Like Morton Andersen?

As to Lucy: the most horrifying thing to happen to her was her adoption by psychologists. Harrumph.

It's enough to make the geladas angry.

I'm so confused Post

09/03/2010 7:36 PM

So, I was reading National Geographic at the lyeberry.

There was an article about CO2 scrubbers, basic premise ; capture the co2 and flush the device with water, inject it underground for storage.

At the end was kind of a throwaway line , " or combine with hydrogen to make new liquid hydrocarbon".

I had started a thread last year and one of the things i learned from the comments was that the bonds in CO2 are so tight that it takes a lot of energy to break them, hard to convert CO2 to sumpin' useful. Wouldn't this including adding hydrogen to it in order to make "liquid hydrocarbons"?

Think all you'd be doing is wasting energy. AFAIK, you'd have to put energy into the CO2 + some H2 mix to get maybe CH4 plus some O2 (doesn't it just feel so wrong?).

Then you've got to get all that H2 from somewhere to start with.

How about CO2 + 2 H2O → CH4 + 2 O2 ?

Money for nothing ....

Strait, Raitt & Chicken Post

09/03/2010 11:29 PM

Knoppfler and Clapton=double plus awesome

Bonnie Raitt , very much excellent

Both videos, much enjoyed

free chicken article , good, i miss having chickens, a swarm( Rhode Island reds, bantams, a few ducks, one very odd turkey) would follow me around , voraciously devouring anything living under the rocks or boards I would lift up for them.

Revealing furry woodland creatures, who seek to wreck the Five-Year Plan Post

09/04/2010 6:41 AM

License to kill gophers by the government of the United Nations. Man, free to kill gophers at will. To kill, you must know your enemy, and in this case my enemy is a varmint. And a varmint will never quit - ever. They're like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong. So you have to fall back on superior intelligence and superior firepower. And that's all she wrote. Who's the gopher's ally. His friends. The harmless squirrel and the friendly rabbit. I have to laugh, because I've outsmarted even myself. My enemy, my foe, is an animal. In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I've gotta get inside this guy's pelt and crawl around for a few days. So I jump ship in Hong Kong and I make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper? A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice. Major Elkie

Geez,

look at what you've started by posting a circuit with a couple of diodes so an ammeter wouldn't go below zero.

maybe the thing to do post one of those good ol trick questions from beginning dc circuits text?

Used to have it on a 45[1]. Also had "A Hard Day's Night"[2] and "Help". All sadly lost.

Good thing is that I only have to think (not even read) the scripts, and I can hear every last inflexion of each and every syllable.

[1] Or maybe it was an EP.

[2] Thanks for the link

Is this a new shutdown reason?

How can we be sure it has been?

Re: Off Topic Post

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;

If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two imposters just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run --

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son!

Dear Emily,

First of all, that is not a proper WTF. Please use proper off-topic post guidelines.

And if thine testicle offends thee, pluck it out. As far as I can glean from the Fox News pundits, this means change the channel to a station that doesn't have offending testicles or bleached-blond airheads spouting utter horse hockey and annoying the ever-loving ectoplasm out of me.

Love,

little susie howard johnson
