Challenge 7

04/14/2008 7:36 AM

Good morning! I've found a picture of something that, so far, has not been identified! (Although there is a theory)

What say you?

In the meantime, this one was identified by a 13 year old, No-one else got it!

Photo 1? Um, er........

Photo 2 could be the sole of a sports shoe or the surface of a table-tennis bat, depending on dimensions, though the surface of a table tennis bat is more regularly-patterned, so probably not.

Very entertaining, these picture quizzes! Keep 'em coming!

Photo #1 looks like some form of paddle, as it looks like its made of sterilisable metal I wonder if its used to make food substance?

Maybe for making butter from milk? But what is the lever poking out of the stem doing? does it move the paddle up and down?

Photo #2 Not sure about.... but it maybe some form of anti-slip mat or sole or sommit?

John.

Is photo 2 a close up of a basketball or netball or other sports ball?

#2 is almost certainly a basketball.

#1 is very interesting indeed. PlbMak, do I understand that you're saying that even you don't know what it is? If so, this really does make for a good challenge then!

I may know...but I'll have to delve deeeeep into the archives to see if I'm right.

Until then, I don't suppose anyone has suggested that it's a really super-efficient rotary spatula? You can flip significantly more burgers per second with it.

Arrggghh. Number 1 is driving me crazy. Even more so than usual than usual. It seems so familiar.

I keep thinking it's a wire or rope bundling tool. Does the toggle-lever looking thing midway up the shaft actually toggle? Would you wrap to the toggle with it in the "toward handle" position and then flick it down for the wire/rope to slide off?

Still...what would the other 3 tines do?

Re: Challenge 7

Silly me. The number of tines you wrap around would control the finished diameter of the coiled wire/rope/yarn/string/pasta. More trips around more tines = bigger diameter. Along the wind you taughtly go from tines to toggle (in the up position). Then when you're done you flip the toggle down and that bit slides off, releasing the tension. Ta-da...you have your neat coil.

A possible side application would be to wrap, say, yarn around it then dip the whole lot into a dye.

Heck, if this ain't what this tool is for then I'm building a factory to make a coiling tool just like it! Who wants to invest?

#1 Would make a nice catapult projectile, the little stub would catch nicely on the elastic...the fins are self evident...and the 'warhead'...well 'nuff said.

I've informed the security services.... so get ready for the knock on the door...

Number 1 is obviously one of those weather mapping tools where the forecaster would aim this at a map, push that little trigger thingy on the side, then the X blade is ejected by spring action to mark an X on the map.

Number 2 looks like a water membrane used to seal concrete foundations just below the grade line. You can buy this in rolls from Home Depot.

Still thinking about photo #1.... could it be a hydrophone?

You know a microphone is in the head the side toggle is where its towed and the rear inbetween the fins there is a hole for a wire??

#1 i now think is a close up of a basket ball or other ball with the mottled finish...

#1 my guesses are, 1. a tile spacing installation tool, 2. a heater for a bucket like roof tar or something like that, or 3. some sort of paddle mixer for hand use.

#2 I'm with everyone else, either a basket ball, or a Nerf ball of some sort.

#1 is a paint stirrer, possibly battery powered and motor dirven. The lever on the side is a toggle switch lever.

#2 is an American football.

The American game is indeed football. It starts with a kick. Most times when a team turns the ball over to the other team, they do so with a kick. Many games end with a kick. Many games are decided by a kick. Kickers are often the highest scoring members of their teams.

You claim has been kicked down and kicked out the door!

I'd say #1 is the actuator for a wind direction sensor, except that those don't usually have fins for vertical velocity. Maybe this one is for use in a wind tunnel.

The irregularity of #2 tells me it (or the original) was made by hand in China. I have to agree with the others that is is the surface of some sport object like a football or basketball...

I can't be certain owing to my vantage point at the time, but judging by the shape of the silver object I'm fairly suspicious that a similar implement was employed with what I still feel was chillingly careless abandon during my last visit to the proctologist.

This device was patented in 1987 by Dr. A. Nal, an avid skydiver and practicing proctologist, who had difficulty staying on course during free-fall. The function of the device was to add aerodynamic stability via the projecting fins. In application, the device was ... ur ... ah ... inserted ... and the trigger release was tethered to the rip (pun intended) cord so the device would be automatically removed at the correct moment.

Unfortunately, during its first test, the release mechanism did not function as planned, and Dr. Nal, making a perfect 3-point landing, did not survive.

Subsequent to Dr. Nal's demise, the patent was purchased from his estate by an adult toy company in Brooklyn, NY.

Film at 11 ...

Photo #1 is clearly a hardwood table. I can't seem to make out the wood species because of the fizzle-dicker somewhat blocking my view, but it appears to be Beech. It could, however be Hickory based on the whitish stripe and the mineral streaks. If I had a better view of the table legs, I may be able to ID the period it's fashioned after.

#2 appears to be an extreme close-up of a synthetic basketball.

#3 is, without doubt, a metal (possibly German silver, but could be pewter or zinc) finial.

If you've ever used one.....you have to be part hydraulics engineer/artist, with patience, to get everything "flushed".

Not like our "flush it and forget it".

That's looking favorite at the moment, it's stamped Henckel, a good quality cooking utensil brand.

As to the 'knob', I'm surprised no-ones got that yet...

Re: Challenge 7

The second is a basketball, and the first one is much like me, an enigma wrapped in a question mark.

So to guesstimate, it at first glance looks like a possibly electric powered stinger or heat dipped "cattle pronged" instrument. I can't tell if that is a lever, switch, or release switch.

If I was to be spacing vertical sheets or panels to a wall for instance, and that was a sliding lever, then I could fasten four sheets against a wall tightly together, and use the sliding lever to pull or snap the tool out of such close tolerances.

I see that the handle is insulated (heat ? elec ?) so perhaps it is used to either handle, push/pull, or carry hot trays or something just heated or hot in general.

#3 looks familiar? may be a handle on a lid, such as on tea pot or coffee pot or some thing like that?

I think this has been covered in other posts, but, maybe not quite accurately enough for you. #1: is it the paddle out of a bread making machine?

You had me going there for a while..............that's with Bugibba..........Had no idea where it was. I had a few guesses before I looked it up on the web.

I think that is even more outrageous than having the same in Ozz, at least we are renowned for throwing another shrimp on on the barbie...........what about a Mongol stir fry???

No I thought it may have come off a Mongolian four poster bed!!!!!

Not that they have them in their traditional gers

OR

It could be in this bed chamber somewhere???

Well, Mongolia used to be considered an obscure locale, so I figured "Bugibba" wasn't well-known enough to detract from the imagery... And yeah, just about anything could be hidden away in THAT bedchamber - including Pibmak's pinball machine!

Re: Challenge 7

Hello PlbMak

Item 1 is easy.

What everyone assumes is a handle, is not.

So the article is a part from an automatic leek transplanting machine.

The supposed "handle" is the part which is rapidly plunged into the ground, then withdrawn to allow the leek plant to be dropped into the hole.

The square fins or vanes, are to allow for correct orientation of the hole.

Kind Regards....

If you didn't say #3 'the knob' is around the size of a handle from a tea pot my guess would of been a button on a pair of jeans or something around that size.

My second guess would be the thingy that holds the shade on a lamp, but I would't expect that to have the dimples as it would be threaded.

With the tea pot handle size in mind, I'm going to guess its the fancy end part of a towel or curtain rod, and that's my final answer...for now.

Wow haven't seen a Real Pin Ball game in Ages. Do they still have Pin Ball games in Arcades these days? Thought they all got replaced by the electronic video games.

Even the hole in the wall bars that I hang out at only have electronic games.

BTW - about your tag line - I've always preferred this:

I've searched through a lot of listings for Henckel's products, and didn't see this item. It probably is some kind of stirrer, but I doubt those rounded edges could chop much. Maybe it's an item Henckel doesn't make anymore, or they sell it only in the UK.
