12v 20AH gel Battery

07/06/2008 4:43 AM

The battery in my golf trolley didn't make the 18 holes yesterday.
I've ordered a new one...but what can I use the old one for? It still has a reasonable capacity, any good (or hilarious) ideas?
Or does anyone know a magic way to revitalise one...magnets & garlic tied to it?

It's all that zag zigging down the fairway Del! When your handicap comes down, that battery would probably do you 36 holes!

Actually I played well for a change...shot well below my handicap (90 of the white tees..Ok it ain't Tiger Woods but my best ever was 87 off the yellows)

If you don't zig zag down the fairways while playing you don't get your moneys worth out of using the course.

I have a 6 & 12V pair of batteries here recycled from a fixture lifter from a TCIL system, makes a great door stop, much better than the previous transformer with the wires hanging off so someone can trip over it.

Maybe, if your into deep sea fishing, plastic dip the battery (seal it up good) and use it as a fishing sinker, mount a cataput/trebochet on your small boat, and out cast everyone around.

Del,

Enter it into your own Junkyard Battery contest!!! It now qualifies as junk, it's a single piece and will drive a heap of LEDs for ever!!!

I think that would qualify you for the 10,000 GOOZ cards that you could send over there for humanitarin work that seems so desperately needed.

Use them to charge an electric fence to scare off burglars. Times are getting hard we have a lot of sneak theifs running around espically on moonless night. Wire up an transformer to the batteries and run a electric wire fence around your property.

When you hear that late night scream of pain just unplug the battery and let them go. I wire mine in series and use a solar panel to keep them charged. It keeps the horses in sneak theives out so far.

I know this would not stop an old country boy but for city people it works good.

Re: 12v 20AH gel Battery

I had a heap of batteries taken from a mobile Xray unit (changed yearly) used a couple of them to power an old UPS. Usually new batteries for a UPS cost more than the UPS. The Xray batteries didnt fit into the UPS casing, but they did the job. They could keep my computergoing for hours, which is more than I can say for the correct type of battery for the UPS.

Another suggestion for the battery is to leave it on charge, and rig up some emergency lighting around the home

Actually there is a technique to squeeze more life out. Sometimes cells short and it has been said, not that I would tell you to try this and certainly not if you don't have some successful experience doing dangerous things and surviving, but it may be possible to burn out the shorts in the cells by charging a large capacitor and discharging it across the terminals. It isn't a permanent fix but can make it functional for a while longer.

Of course you should never try this or many of the other things I've done but it has been said to work sometimes.

If the failure cause is sulfation of the plates you may can revive it using one of the newer type battery chargers that can reverse the sulfation build up. You can also find circuit diagrams on line for building your own reconditioner if you are so inclined. If you have a shorted cell due to plate debris collecting in the bottom of the cell I'm afraid your are out of luck.

Charge the battery and keep it in your cart. The present battery if gets descharged during the Course, replace with this stand-by one. It is fairly easy. This way you can prolong the time for buying a new one again.

The battery can be given for a slow charge of long duration, and then it can do better after a full charge. Since ir is a gel battery you need to have it work 25degree C or above.

One way to know battery capaicity better, is to light a 10 W , 12Volt lamp with it ( or a lamp from your car) and see how long it takes to get the battery discharged.

Being this is a gel cell, I doubt sulfonation will be a factor. That's a symptom of the sulfuric acid in a lead/acid battery, while gel cells are usually (but not always!) an alkaline electrolyte material. However, I have seen some "gel cells" with H2SO4 in a fiberglass mat.

Thanks Guys,

Some good ideas for me to ponder..the emergency lighting could be a good winter project for the hovel...(Ha maybe I can charge it from my Electric Eel offsping once I've done the Amazon trip)

It might be interesting to try a 'reconditioner' and see if it works...

Didn't you notice something here?

While your cart was powered, you possibly ran your average on the course.

When you had to drag the lump around part way cause the battery went flattery, you improved your game, imagine how good you'd improve if you had to drag it the whole 73 holes.

Re: 12v 20AH gel Battery

The answer guy on the wrong side of a question?!?

I've had some luck restoring them by tapping the terminals with a reverse voltage a few times, (I usually keep tapping until I can detect a slight temp increase) then putting a lamp on it until there is no more glow in the filament, then slow charge it for a couple days. if it works you've got an extra battery, if it doesn't, it was no good anyway, so you've got nothing to lose, unless you blow up your garage :o. The reverse voltage has something to do with blowing off the ions that have built up on the plates, robbing them of their electrical potential. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does - it just depends on the battery.

Keep it in the cart. When you're on a downhill part of the course, switch it in. When going uphill, switch back to the new one.

Alternatively, you can use the battery casing for a foot stool; a step (to reach things that are just out of reach...like the neighbor's new satellite dish); an ammo box (for your arrows); a sandbox (which cat's use to...you know); a storage box for your golf balls

Del,

While you are deciding what to do with that old battery, I would suggest putting it on a trickle charge. ( these are gel batteries - right?) If you use a well regulated supply that stays within the manufacturers specs it will probably maintain what capacity it still has and maybe pick up a little. I have a couple that I use for analog circuit testing and portable power. The battery manufacturer recommends a trickle charge of 13.6V to 13.9V. The manufacturer of the equipment they came in supplied a little power cube with a diode for a recharger and recommended running it clear down before recharging. Using the battery manufacturers constant trickle charge, I estimate that they have retained 25% to 50% of their original capacity.

I have heard of restoring dead Ni-Cd batteries with over voltage and reverse polarity charging. I think this was due to the Ni-Cd failure mechanism involving whiskers of electrode metal growing from one plate to another. The extreme charging voltage would vaporize them and restore cell operation. I don't know how effective it was - but it sounds fun.

There are re-vitalizers around, I use them as standard before a battery "needs" one, but many swear by them.

Here are two examples (click on each link in turn) of the type of units I am talking about, there are also schematics on the web to allow you to build a similar unit for yourself. These are just two examples of many such units available....

http://www.batterystuff.com/battery-restoration/12-volt/PP12L.html

http://www.batterystuff.com/battery-restoration/12-volt/OBD-12.html

Just attach a small charger (1 amp or less) and one of the above units to the battery concerned and leave it for a month and see if the recovery has taken place. If a cell is internally shorted (difficult to find out on a modern battery with hidden cell to cell connections, or use a drill first and very carefully in the right places!!!) then nothing will help it at all......

There are several methods to revitalize an old battery. Some, as mention in Answer 13 are "shock treating".

Many years ago, in semi-war situation we have done this with Melex carts.

From the nominal 4-year life expectancy we got another 2-3 years, but...they had to be with caps over openings so we could replace their acid by a new or re-filtered one. Not so clean job. But... you maybe more Independent when Nuclear Plants will go on strike or hurricanes disconnect the overhead transmission lines. It is wise to rethink after Independent Day July 4th

Use it as a pendulum for an electric clock. Then, write to CR4 and explain that you've discovered perpetual motion. Then, use battery to hit yourself over the head for ever having written a perpetual motion post on CR4.

The Eliminator intelligent battery charger can revitalize old batteries. It depends on the type of battery. I picked one up at Canadian Tire a few months back. Works great.

Giraffes seem to be unusually common in and about London. Odd thing, that...

How about a cat house?

We use box's, but just imagine the strength gained with what you got there. Could even be used out doors.

What if you just wired up the batteries in series? You could get from hole to hole that much quicker...Wouldn't do much for your game though... But damnit you will look cool zipping around the course

Cheers

Hi "Cat"

Use the battery to electolyze water to make HH & O so you can use the HYDROGEN in a fuel cell to drive the motor of the golf trolley (cart?).

Nothing could be more simple minded. (:-()

Maybe if I bolt a magnet to the front of the trolley and then dangle another magnet in front of it on a stick

If he arranges it so the magnet being dangled can be flip-flopped, he could even have a reverse gear...
