Do You Have a Pet Theory?

04/20/2009 10:14 PM

A "Pet Theory" is one that we cannot seem to let go of regardless or all peer reviews, critiques, or known facts.

I have at least one.

No matter what I am always on the lookout for any shred of information that might resurrect my pet.

What ideas, or theories do you find that somehow came into your brain house, and won't leave, no matter what?

Re: Do You Have a Pet Theory?

No - thanks though, I shall read up on it. A very quick scan on the net put it somewhere between barking mad and cutting edge (!), but I haven't had time to form an opinion yet. Without your mentioning it, I might have been a long time in hearing about it, so many thanks.

I was actually paraphrasing a school teacher from many years back. He used the statement as an interpretation of E=MC2. I've still got no idea if such a comparison is valid or pure bunkum ! It gets into that very complex world that folk such as Jorrie can interpret. Not a topic I'm very clued up on, but I will endeavour to learn more.

I found it an interesting read. An interesting Idea and would explain some things if it is true, but i am sceptical of everything

well on a quantum scale we are waves of energy so who knows?

Let me know what you think of it

Fear not, a deity is where you find it. And I don't care if it's last name is Theory or Force or Gaia.

Back in the day a similar book came out called if I recollect "The Dancing Wu Li Masters".

Excellent read and as solid as any other popularized science writing.

Re: Do You Have a Pet Theory?

It's all quite simple really......

"Now what is the message there? The message is that there are known "knowns." There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don't know. So when we do the best we can and we pull all this information together, and we then say well that's basically what we see as the situation, that is really only the known knowns and the known unknowns. And each year, we discover a few more of those unknown unknowns"

I cannot believe you typed all that

I actually wonder, given each discovery spawns multiple new unknowns, whether as our knowledge expands, if our ignorance (known unknowns and unknown unknowns) doesn't expand faster?

And if one were to try to answer the question at any given time - "What do we know about a given field" that the roadmaps are fuzzy indeed.

One of the intimidating things about ever going back to mathematics - I know I didn't know much when I graduated with a Bachelor's, but I fear what I don't know has expanded beyond my ability to even map it.

What about the unknown knowns? The things you know but you don't know that you know them until someone explains them.

After all how many times have you said, or you heard someone say, "I should have known!"

Ya know what I mean?

STOP RIGHT THERE!!!!!!! If you finally find the basic parts of all the unknown unknowns, you will start to unravel the very fabric of the universe. ONCE THIS STARTS, there is no turning back. Touch or remove one piece and it's belly up for all of us. There are certain things one should not know, like what is that cr*p on the bottom of my shoe, or the flavor of the gum stuck under my chair. Beware! Be a-scared, be very a-scared.

Jim's "Ernest goes to,,,,,Jail, Camp, etc." are some of the best slapstic comedy movies you'll ever see.

I don't know that I don't know what I don't know when I don't know it.

Re: Do You Have a Pet Theory?

You recollect correctly, I found 'Holographic Universe' a much easier read than 'Dancing Wu Li Masters' (which I still haven't finished, it just sits on my shelf gathering dust... poor thing) and there is another similar title 'The Tao of Physics' which I also have not yet finished reading but sits neglected on the shelf too (of course at the moment my 'shelves' are boxes thus making it even harder to read their contents)

I agree, deity IS where you find it, and we all DO make our own realities... within certain un-identified parameters... Just don't drink the kool-aid unless you truly believe in the 'salvation' of red dye #3.

I have stopped smoking twice (effectively, 1000 times less effectively!!), once for 15 years, once for nearly 11 years (the last time)...

Its not easy.

If you had seem my Mother take almost 20 years to die properly, you would stop instantly.

Dying is not a problem, its how you get there(and how long it takes!) that can be a problem....

Think about it!!!

Obsessive jogging is, overall, bad for health. They never smile, get chaffed nipples, and look like hamsters on a wheel. Charity fund-raisers excepted.

Cats are more powerful, but unwilling.

I had a friend decide she was going to harness her cat for walks - a leash.

Never got past the putting it on stage - cat rolled over and acted possessed until with much rending of flesh (mine), I removed it.
