A One-Word Phrase For Putting Into Use A Part

01/16/2011 7:55 AM

Hello Ladies & Gentlemen,

this time it's my turn to ask a question: I'm looking for a one-word phrase for the description of taking an obsolete or rejected part and performing on it some machining actions in order to put it to use again. I was suggested using the term "salvaging", but it looks too "humane". Without getting into the linguistic ramifications of the meanings, I also thought about refurbishing or recommissioning, but both don't seem very appropriate.

Please help.

The term 'rework' (or past-tense, reworked) has been around for a long time.

Companies that have a strong quality assurance department will usually allow a defective part to be put back into the production flow if it can be 'reworked' to meet spec.

Depending on the extent to which it has to be 'reworked' perhaps it would become 're-manufactured'

Call it "jewelry". That will give it the best resale value.

Re: A one-word phrase for putting into use a part

I think the key question is:-
Is the new purpose the same or similar to the old or an entirely new function?
So reconditioning a cylinder head, is...well reconditioning. Using it as an artwork is simply re using scrap material.
If it's sawn in half and used as a cylinder head for some totally new 2cylinder design then you are re-utilising it.
I know, this is a trick... you're all ganging up on me to try and make me agree that 'repurposing' is a legitimate word and not a b******ization of the English language...
Well I won't stand for it I tells ya.

Hello Roschach of Texas, I'm speaking of the Mechanical English, which may be the British, the American, ze Deutsch or the Latin. Maybe there is not such a one-word phrase for my thesis, but generally I'm looking up several languages' ethymologic dictionaries, and I hoped some mechanic professional will make my day. There are several good answers on CR4, but, at least for myself, I'll have top make up my mind which looks best proffessionally: linguistics, machining, etc.

you may want to use a "thesaurus" if you encounter this problem again. it is a reference manuel that contains synomyns, or words with simular meanings.

The company I work for uses the term 'refurbish' to put the part back to it's original use. I think the OP is also thinking along the lines of making the part usable again for society in a broader sense which may or may not include the part's original purpose.

At the risk of being pedantic the expression "a one-word phrase" is a contradiction in terminology since, by definition a phrase is two or more words. However, a single word that meets the posited need is clearly RECLAIM. This, since the definition was that the starting item did not meet the requirement.

I would think the word should be (updated) because that is what the modification probably has done to the part.

ROTABLE - describes a part that can be refurbished and reused eg a brake mechanism with worn pads.

No doubt the poor english language can be mangled to produce a new set of words for this idea eg ROTABILISATIONABLE, ROTABATING DEROTABED.

"Re-Manufacturing" There you have it, turning something from Unserviceable to Serviceable. We use this term in the aviation business, especially for engine parts which truly need re-machining to place them back in tolerance (when suitable, key is the process of inspection, planning, adding material by processing, maching to Net Size, inspection, acceptance and certification for receipt into storage and re-use). Hope that fits the bill. Bob the Farmer

Sorry Night Manager, but by definition, a phrase can't be one word. However, for your application "Cannibalize" springs to mind! Strictly speaking, this refers to the equipment you robbed to get the part, but if you're going to perform major surgery on the said part, it seems apt. "Recover from Scrap" and rip the living daylights out of it!! Shalom!

Hi Zadok, Shalom! With your kind permission I won't be ripping anything, since I generally do not rip things. .. Maybe after second try... Actually I needed a word for Hebrew "hantzala", if yiou get my drift. It means to save, but with a hint to "make use of something". The Academy suggested salvaging, but as I pointed out, this phrase looks and feels something of the Humanities, not Mechanics. The surgery will be my next step...

I have frequently used the term "reworking" a part or "upgrading" a part. Both are accurate and appropriate. I personally like reworking because it describes that the part is being reworked to make it suitable to put back in service.

What brings you to these parts?

And if anyone wants you to help break apart an old bathtub, run like hell!

Welcome to CR4.

In the steel casting foundry industry, a casting which has been inspected and repaired is said to have been "upgraded". This process can involve welding, Radiographic inspection, ultrasound inspection, die - penetrant inspection, etc...

That's a very creative way to describe bringing a defective part into specification.

  • given to the overuse of long words; "sesquipedalian orators"; "this sesquipedalian way of saying one has no money"
  • a very long word (a foot and a half long)
  • polysyllabic: (of words) long and ponderous; having many syllables; "sesquipedalian technical terms"
I learned it from Mizuti (one of the moderators). See how edumacational CR4 is?

economy must be slow, so many answers from so many people, when the first 4 of 5 were on the money. The Cat is right, why corrupt the language with made up words when several existing word modifications fit the need properly.

It does seem to be a combination of refurbish and repurpose.

refurpose?

repurbish?

repurposh?

(In any case, the person saying these new words doesn't sound like he is sober enough to be reconditioning parts anyway)

How about recondition and recommission?

(oops, mixing those words just doesn't work... recondission, recommition?)

"taking an obsolete or rejected part and performing on it some machining actions in order to put it to use again"

If the obsolete or rejected part is useless due to non-compliance with design specifications and can be re-machined to bring said part within design specification parameters, how about re-spec'd - put back into or modified to acceptable design specifications.

Pronounce: respect (emphasis on "re")

Use: This case of dumifadgers has to be re-spec'd before they can be shipped.

probably arse backwards but just a though

I'd heard the word in a recent presentation:

Wait for it....... Upcycling.

The part is still good, not worth trashing/breaking down to recycle, but reused in a newer, improved configuration

Rework, Re-Do etc etc all meean to repair

Some of manufactureres are using the term Re-Furbish but this is done in their facillities and they use new assemblies from their stores so this also do not fit here.

It is a process of bringing some possible quantity of faulty equipment [may be only one] from a lot of faulty equipments by taking some working parts/ assembly[s] from ones which is/ are either the same type of equipment or using the same component / assembly to be used in another equipment.

Upcycle is the word.

It was used/coined at a LEED forum here in NYC. You heard it here first. From me.

Not to toot my own horn, but the password is "upcycle"

Before I try giving myself a "good answer" I'll wait for you all to do it.

Upcycle.

Please refer to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannibalization

Cannibalization in Wikpedia

Maintenance

MaintenanceIn maintenance of mechanical or electronic systems with interchangeable parts, "cannibalization" refers to the practice of removing parts or subsystems necessary for repair from another similar device, rather than from inventory, usually when resources become limited. The source system is usually crippled as a result, if only temporarily, in order to allow the recipient device to function properly again.

Cannibalization is usually due to unavailability of spare parts, due to an emergency situation, long resupply times, physical distance, or insufficient planning or budget. Cannibalization can also be due to surplus inventory. At the end of World War II a large quantity of high quality, but unusable war surplus equipment such as radar devices made a ready source of parts to build radio equipment.

Diminishing Manufacturing Sources

Main article: DMSMS

Sometimes, removing parts from old equipment is the only way to obtain spare parts, either because they are no longer made, are obsolete, or can only be manufactured in large quantities. In logistics, this is known as Diminishing Manufacturing Sources (DMS).

This is often the case in the military, and ships and aircraft, as well as other expensive equipment that is produced in limited quantities. Such is the case with the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk, the sole survivor of a class of three ships built during the early-1960s. The ship herself is over forty years old, and having manufacturers build individual custom replacement parts would be highly impractical, and thus decommissioned ships, such as the USS Independence, have been utilized for the necessary parts to keep the Kitty Hawk in operation.

Another example is the Union Pacific's 4-8-4 locomotive 838 is used as a spare parts source for 844 since the type has been out of production for decades and the builder itself is no longer in existence.

One strategy used to combat DMS is to purchase additional inventory during the production run of a system or part, in quantities sufficient to cover the expected number of failures. This strategy is known as a "lifetime buy". An example of this is the many 30- and 40-year-old railway locomotives being run by small operators in the United Kingdom. These operators will often buy more locomotives than they actually require, and keep a number of them stored as a source of spare parts.

Happy to Google but before it to "wweb32.exe" the THESAURUS I am using to improve my English to find out the correct spellings of cannibalize.
