"What? Oh, yeah; car problems."

"...Well the engine is flooded and I can't get it started."

"Yes, I called triple-A. And the Coast Guard... I'll explain later."

I realise that many of the leading economic experts were warning us all, about a "wave" of cheap Chinese auto imports comimg upon our shores in the near future, but I didnt think that they meant it so literally, or so soon!

(Damn this new, green crop of wannabes in the 'synchronised driving on a barge' competition.)

If we want to make it to the next Olympics in this endeavour, as an exhibition sport, we have to at least make it past the regionals.

Hi, Tornado;

I just did a brief Gooooooooooooooooog.... search for "Rodin redux". Still wondering? - please explain in 404,274,985,121 words or less, AYC

Got some snuff on his artistic portrayals and expressions, but not much more.

Loupy

PS - I know that Rodin is a "famous" painter/sculpter.

Perhaps Auguste Rodin's most famous sculpture is "The Thinker," whose pose resembles that of the man in the picture. "Redux" basically means "revisited."

23 words << 404,274,985,121.

That Thinker guy makes you think a little bit, don't you think?

Thank you for responding and giving me the lowdown on the Rodin "revisited" quip. - GA

Re: Caption This for 08/13/10

Yes....

The original marble sculpture resides in the Musée Rodin in Paris. There is a replica (in bronze, as I recall) in the Maryhill Museum near Goldendale, WA, USA. This is about 80 miles from where I grew up, and is where I first encountered this work.

There is a middling length story about this, which I will share if there is enough interest.

Tornado, perhaps you should post the outcome of our brief discussion, here on this "caption this" blog postings - perhaps into a comment posted by you on "General" category, re; Rodin's "Thinker" - if it has not already been "redux".

I've only "talked" to you a couple of times on this posting, although it should be considered as "off topic".

My own interest in the subject has been somewhat rekindled since your last post, and I will re-investigate it as an adult, and not as an ignorant, brash stupid school-kid, dismissing and placing aside, anything that resembled history, or philosophy or science, as I did when I was a child - Loupy.

I sacked my Lawyers long ago. This way it is more fun. Coming to think of it the original is about that size. A troubled man could easily hide behind it, as I did while and after creating it.

Good one Chris. I'll be in touch, Ky.

Several readers have expressed interest in some further story about "The Thinker" and Sam Hill's Maryhill Museum. I just did a page or so on this, but when I tried to insert some supplemental links, the main post vanished. I apologize for the delay, but will attempt to reconstruct it.

"The Thinker" at Maryhill Museum

Samuel Hill (often called Sam) was a lawyer/engineer who worked for a time with James J Hill's Great Northern Railway. This fascinating individual had many cultural, travel, and engineering interests. He married James J's daughter Mary, who thus became Mary Hill Hill. The marriage was troubled, and Sam later had acquaintances, affairs, and two more marriages with other women.

After leaving Great Northern, Sam Hill moved west. In the early days of automobiles, he became an advocate of good highways. Near the south middle of Washington State, along the Columbia River, he built an experimental road with seven types of paving systems, including pioneering asphalt (macadam) types. He also spearheaded the origin of the Washington State Department of Highways.

A short distance west of where the now Highway 97 crosses the Columbia, Hill built a mansion named Maryhill after his wife, but it was never used as a residence, perhaps owing to the breaking marriage. In his travels, Sam became acquainted with Loie Fuller and Queen Marie of Romania.

Loie Fuller was an American stage-lighting inventor and modern dancer (Fire Dance, Serpentine Dance), who flourished in France in an art/literary circle that included Stephane Mallarmé, Toulouse-Lautrec, Isadora Duncan, Auguste Rodin, Queen Marie, and many others. She suggested that Sam turn Maryhill into an art museum, which was later dedicated by Queen Marie.

This rural treasure features memorabilia of Fuller and Marie, a collection of ornate chess sets, and a collection of about 12-inch fashion dolls in costumes of the time. The "Thinker" replica that resides there came from Loie Fuller's connection with Rodin. (The original marble one is in the Musée Rodin in Paris.) I have enjoyed a traveling Dale Chihuly glass exhibit there, too. Sam's old experimental highway (lying just east of Hwy 97 as it rises from the Columbia to Goldendale) has been refurbished. It is now known as "Maryhill Loops Road," and is a venue for road rallies, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and skateboarders.

A Google or Wikipedia on "Loie Fuller", "Maryhill", "Maryhill Loops Road", and "Samuel Hill" will tell you much more.

Sam Hill also designed the Peace Arch monument at Blaine, WA, USA; and a Stonehenge replica in memory of the Klickitat County war dead in World War I.

Thank you kindly.

Someday I might tell the story of the Russian student choir waiting in line at the Goldendale Observatory (in the same neck of the woods).

Now let me think - what could have caused this. Was it arrogance? Gluttony? Greed? Or did the ferry just have to take a dump?
