So what's the story behind your Avatar?

05/22/2008 12:25 PM

So what is the story behind your avatar, anyway?

Here's mine.

Its a little girl playing in a fountain. I have no idea who she is.

Look at her face. She's filled with the joy of the moment.

She doesn't know how the fountain's pumps work, or how the rebar supports the structure. She doesn't know what the shafts or flanges for the pumping and piping underneath are rated for, and if they passed the test. She doesn't know that I and my crew tested the mechanical properties and or proof tested the piping.

She doesn't know that the steel used in the electricity generating plant, high voltage poles, structural bolts and balance of plant have test reports with my name on them.

She doesn't know that parts made from my products are on that airplane high overhead.

She doesn't know that the bolts that held her car seat secure or the engine into the vehicle that drove her to the park today are properly heat treated. Or that I signed off on the macroetch, inclusion content, tensile results or the like on the steel used to make them, as well as the springs, half shafts, injector bodies, weld studs, fasteners or a host of other parts like air bag detonators.

She doesn't know how those fittings that get machined and crimped that make up her daddy's car's brake or power steering system are fabricated. And that I was part of the decision to optimize the chemistry so that they would machine economically but still crimp successfully without cracking.

She doesn't know that I and my crew confirmed the melt chemistry of the products that hold stuff at high temperatures and pressures where her daddy works. Or that I approved the application of the material for that overhead crane and its hoist and rigging that he has to use from time to time.

She is just happy to know that daddy came home from work today and took her to the park, where she can do what's important to her, lay down in the fountain, and smile.

In her world, there is just the joy of the moment.

Because, as an engineering professional, I did my job.

I did it Right.

I did it for me.

I did it for her.

And I did it for 6.6 billion of her closest friends, who all want pretty much the same things, regardless of where they live.

This is for me what Florman describes as "the existential joy of engineering."

http://www.amazon.com/Existential-Pleasures-Engineering-Samuel-Florman/dp/0312275463

In the first place, do no harm. That's the story behind my avatar. I won't be changing it anytime soon. It continues to inspire me.

Whats the story behind yours?

milo

We farmed with mules when I was a boy and I grew to a grudging respect. They're smarter than most people, prettier than most of my family, and smell better than the girls I dated in school. So, when I found one in my favorite work posture, well....

There's only one problem with them. They will work very hard perhaps 6 to 8 hours a day and that's it. You cannot work a mule to death. They are not well suited to our modern pace of 24/7. Oh, and they have a terrific memory; if you use the whip on a mule today, he'll wait maybe three, four months till you've forgotten and then bite the devil out of your arm! Come to think of it, those might be good attributes for us.

So interesting facts. I knew about mules only they are incredibly stubborn and enduring. That's all.

I've skimmed this news article just yesterday. And of what I was astonished is how much could be price of this pair of mules (it should be rare ware for nowadays industrial society). From where they could get ones? Who had been running mules' trade business? Maybe as pets? Hmm.

They also can become very attached to their owners. My uncle was a sharecropper all his life. Before he died in a car accident he had begun every day for the previous 15 years going to the barn before daylight to feed his mule. The day after my uncle died family members went to the barn and found his mule dead.

They're still used for garden work. My dad kept one all his life, even though he gave up farming in the early 1950s. Used to ride the mule around in the back of his pickup. The mule loved it but the state troopers were always aghast.

Hello Nigh

If you are using Firefox and have upgraded to AVG Free v8.0 this "Format Loss" of the CR4 webpages will occur periodically.

it is caused by the avgsrx.exe 24/7 shield, an excellent Security application, which removes some files it rates as "compromising".

Remedy:

If using Firefox, go to: Tools > Clear Private Data, and remove all except Passwords.

Then re-log-in, and you'll have the proper CR4 Formatted page/s available.

Set up to correctly do the above:

To firstly ensure Firefox is set up to remove all except Passwords, when the above operation is carried out, go to Tools > Options > Privacy > Settings - and tick all boxes on that except the Passwords box

Refer the picture below:

The problem of "Lost Webpage Formatting" does occur with certain other Forum Webpages, not just CR4 Forum.

Kind Regards....

I was accessing CR4 from home & don't use AVG anti-virus although I do use AVG anti-spy & anti-root-kit, do they have the same problem? The browser is the Windows version of Apple's Safari. I don't visit CR4 from home very often & the last time I did I would have had the AVG products in place but was probably still using IE7 for browsing.

Hello again Nigh

It appears to be a problem with a function in AVG, and it is an auto-removal of a possible security problem.

It is not restricted to CR4 Forum, as other Forums have the same problem.

Not to worry about it, at least there is an easy work-around.

Kind Regards....

My avatar is a photo I took of some children watching over a barbed wire fence while our group drilled a water well in a very poor village called Santa Mathilda, Nicaragua. (A village of survivors of Hurricane Mitch whose villages and townspeople were washed away from the flooding). The children were our constant companions as we drilled and installed the well. The youngest little boy (we called Adam) because he was generally without any clothes on. This picture shows him wearing only a diaper.

Immortals.

We belong to an elite group of genetically gifted (mind, body & pocket) individuals.

We believe in eugenics and the foundation of a new order.

We are not racists, but socialize only with supermen.

We are the future.

Hi Milo,

Thanks for telling us what yours was. I you can tell, I am a Star Trek fan. Scotty is an engineer, and seems to give me credibility (just ask Roger Pink). I was in the National Guard and like the uniform. I have also used:

Data with a sense of humor. Like him I try to be logical and more human.

Data as Sherlock Holmes. He finds the logical solution to a problem. I had a couple more relating to my interest in cosmology, but can't seem to get them uploaded.

Hello MarkTheHandyman

In the absence of response from StandardsGuy, the electron tube pictured is a 4 element Tetrode.

The Tetrode has 4 effective elements, but was soon overtaken by development of the Pentode, which had a Suppressor Grid to reflect back to the plate, any otherwise stray electrons.

Read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vacuum_tube#Tetrodes_and_pentodes

Kind Regards....

Re: So what's the story behind your Avatar?

I chose this eagle picture because I like eagles. Here in the great northwest I have been fortunate to see them in many natural settings. They seem to possess a sense of serenity that comes from a secure knowledge of their place in the hierarchy of the sky. Their eyesight is so keen they can see a mouse in a field from a great height and their strength is so great they can dive from that height to pluck that mouse from it's hole and soar away, prize in claw. It is majestic to behold.

The bald eagle also represents this great nation of ours, the US of A. As a nation composed mostly of sons and daughters of immigrants from many nations and by many different means. We are a diverse nation with a seemingly split personality. In the larger sense between conservative and liberal but in many other ethnic and religious ways as well. The eagle represents this as well in that, though they prefer fresh meat, they can be found eating carrion with the vultures to whom they are related.

Dear Milo,

That is a very close to heart description of an engineers job and thanks for sharing it with us. I will most definitely use that in my own shape now and again when some rat arsed bull shitter tries to diminish me or my job.

On the other hand I am sad you took the mystique out of your avatar as I always thought the "lady" in the shallow water was actually quite tasty, now I am embarrassed by that thought just as you would be when you drive in your car and you think you are looking at the backside of some nice young lady only to find out when you drive past that it is a bloke with long hair.

Maybe it is only me and I should seek assistance.

My avatar means not much except as a statement that if you want to achieve something you probably can. That picture is my own built leaning sidecar combination which now has done over 25000 miles in safety. All that without any government check up or regulators perusing eye ever. Just proper engineering with my families safety in mind. They used to call that common sense but it is not so common anymore (sorry to the member who has that as his or her signature, forgot who it was).

I have another one too but that is just a dream. I would love to build my make up cafe racer but money shortage stopped me. Who knows in near future

Take care,

I designed this for a business card when I was in skule. Had some friends who had a complete commercial photoshop for postcards, posters, business cards, etc., and they were kind enough to lend me computer space and expertise as I came in for a few nights to do the pic. Just found a batch of them in my desk drawer, and decided that the picture of the sailing ship with the moon through the sails would make a really neat avatar.

(Fortunately, the crease where the card was scored as a folded business card doesn't show in the avatar.)

Hi, Milo!

Thanks. I could'a used a modern sailer, steamer or a diesel ship, but they never seemed romantic to me. Good thing I wasn't born back in the days of sail, so I can view this type of old dame through eyes of romantic nostalgia not jaded by its realities.

Mark,

Your Schooner is nice but I prefer the Yankee Clipper, probably because it represents the last great hurrah for commercial sailing (with actual sails, that is).

I found these on Wikipedia.

Hi, Shadetree!

The Yankee Clipper was the forerunner of the steamer...too close to modern for my taste.

But the real truth of choosing this ship was (a) when I was a child, I used to draw these with a poop deck, so I wanted to do something familiar (b) I wanted to show all the rigging, which I find fascinating (c) I wanted something to stick a moon in behind so I could play with the shadows on the sheets...shadows of shadows of shadows, etc. (d) when I saw the picture of this vessel that I wanted to draw, I was intrigued by the aft lantern and the opporunity to show the light and the stars against the sky and the sea (which was great fun to create).

Since drawing it in 1992, I have been looking for good definitive work on the physics of sail design; and found some interesting stuff.

There's so much that the curriculum of the Marine Engineering does not cover, especially in the realm of esoteric physics. The faculty needs to add two to three more years onto the graduation requirements to ready us for sailing in space.

Thank goodness for CR4 and the links/clues provided by the participants to new information. It's like an ongoing education.

Mark,

I actually have a 3D plastic, gold-tone, wall-hanging about 16x16 inches of a ship very similar to yours. I have too many other pictures (mostly of wolves) to hang it. It also doesn't match my current decorating scheme. I would happily send it to you.

A thought that occured to me when reading one of the recent news articles on CR4. This article was talking about the ion wind flowing from our atmosphere which appears to be ejected from the poles. The thought was of harnessing that wind for solar sailing.

Hi, Shadetree!

Yes, I would probably like to have the hanging. I have various pictures, etc. of square-riggers up around my office space, and it would fit in nicely, thanks. Please email me about how we might do that.

When I read the article on the changing magnetic lines at the poles being responsible for the various combinations and permutations of boreal colours, it reminded me of the "Guest" with the magnetic motor who writes in from the Waterloo University area about magnetic vortices spinning off the corners of magnets and harnessing the changing lines to create work. I thought that perhaps something similar in the way of changing lines of force was being illustrated at the poles.

Without a doubt, solar sailing is a viable (or almost viable) alternative to space travel, coming out of science fiction in the late 1950's and 60's. There had been a couple of posts from enquiring minds about certain technologies that made me think they were considering solar sailing propulsion.

http://cr4.globalspec.com/blogentry/5619 and others using keywords "solar sail"

and postings by [Harold.goldbaum] that looks suspiciously like he's working on something like solar sailing.

It's closely to me as what I always did [with my boyhood's friend] was drawing everywhere ships with sails, planes and cars. Grown up in steppe land I had been seeing an ocean for the first time at mine late 20s. I've not seen yet a big sailing vessel. It remains for rest of my life either to next one.

Hi, caramba!

I'll see if I can find a historical "tall ship" anchored not too far from you for you to visit closer than the Pallada at Vladivostok .

If you can find the email address for the ship, you can email the Pallada's captain Nikolai Zorchenko on board the ship and ask him if they plan to sail up the Volga to the Caspian Sea over the next few years. The Pallada was designed after the Kruzenshtern, the original ship designed by the tsar to protect Russian's Caspian Sea interests, so it would not be a foolish request. She's a beautiful recreation of that original tall ship.

Every year, historical sailing ships from all over the world visit many ports so people can see what they look like. I don't know if they get close to Kazakhstan, but I will find out if they go to Turkey or Russia.

Thank you so much, Mark,

It's so kind from you. I'm aware about both these ships, not so much as you're but something palpable.

I am wondering that there could be even considered any plans to sail such a ship to Caspian Sea through Volga. It's news for me.

I can't afford this kind of ship-hunting for while but I hope that I'll be able to meet one(s) occasionally and maybe step my foot on deck.

Thanks a lot again.

P.S. BTW it seems Kruzenstern had been built in Gemany then she has been taken over after WW2 to SU as contribution.

Sorry to be late to the game, but I missed this thread when it was new (medical problems). My avatar changes with each 1,000 posts to represent the only real constant - change. What it represents is usually either my current thinking, or simply an attractive (to me) image.

It looks suspiciously like a molecular model of the active ingredient in my favorite addiction(s)- bromphrnol (chocolate) or Caffeine (via Pepsi cola).

Clse?

Caffeine it is (currently)! This is the fourth morph, and there'll be a fifth shortly. Or maybe a full quart - haven't decided yet.

Organic chemistry 30 some years ago, those fixed tetrhedral molecular models, and the fct that I have the sketch of Theobromine(Not sure why I typed bromphenol in earlier post) on my mug right here on my desk.

If the Blue balls represent Nitrogen (Now theres a sentence to be taken out of context!) its a great match for there are two nitrogens on the 6 atom ring and two on the attached five atom ring for theobromine. I rremember caffiene looked damn near like this...

WHICH MUST EXPLAIN MY PARTICULAR ADDICTIONs!
