CR4 Activity History?

12/14/2013 5:19 PM

Hello there CR4,

How can I find some information about how CR4 participation has been increasing or decreasing over the last year or so?

Participation by posts, or membership?

You can go to members: http://cr4.globalspec.com/browse/members

Active members have always been outflanked by unregistered guests...as long as I've been here.

I was surprised to find that there are a relative few of us that post regularly.

I suppose we would be considered the entertainment.

I hang out here, because, while I have friends, none of them are mechanically inclined or possess the mind of an engineer. To them, this entire site would be the most boring, stupid, waste of time on the internet...which is exactly how I feel when I'm listening to them complain about their wives, lives, etc.

Nicely put.

Only, I think the regulars post here because their wife is the boss and doesn't let them talk at home. This is the ultimate bridge for survival. Please correct me if I am wrong, so I might consider changing my statistics. Most of us oldies (and some goodies) want to secure knowledge and hard earned experience to the younger generations in countries that are less spoiled contaminating industrialized. Would be great and those are the values that keep any solid forum alive. I am just shocked at so many of the oldies who spit all over posters so they can rack up their 24,645th one liner posts and few posters come to mind.

This erodes confidence in posters, particularly new posters and will and likely has resulted in reduced participation in CR4.

Sometimes I feel that admin should step in to reign in some of the posters who regularly post and act in ways not aligned with the ethos of CR4.

It should be "rein in" rather than "reign in", and not even bothered with.

You lost me.

I enjoy the freedom to talk about whatever we want, and the lack of moderation has led to a more civil site. We self regulate, and even have an OT section.

If there are members here that you have a problem with, I would suggest that you post as yourself, and air your grievances in the OT section.

Don't be such a chickensh*t wimp, and you won't feel as if admin has to step in and protect you.

Punk!

Re: CR4 Activity History?

Membership participation... as in the number of overall posts?

Well, I would select some date structure to review, every 30 days for example. Then, go to CR4 member lyn (you may have read some of his comments) and look at Posts and comments by lyn. Select a comment from each day of your selected time interval and open it. Within the URL address is a unique number, this corresponding to the number of the post. Make a note of that number, and repeat the process for as many time periods you wish to review. This will tell you how many comments have been made over any selected time period.

I also wish to share with you my umbrage. I have a feeling that I am not the only member bristling over your offensive remarks.

Regarding the anonymous poster thing: do you enjoy anonymous phone calls, freely sharing with the caller any information he wishes to have?

Please, let us know if there is any more we can tell you about CR4, so your experience here will be more to your liking.

Doorman,

Yes I can look at individual users but I am looking for some macro numbers.

My gut tells me that activity is declining based on what I used to see when I was more active on this site. And please don't take umbrage but what I see as an outsider is a few users running amok unrestrained to the detriment to this great forum driving users away, particularly new users.

It would be nice to find a location where the number of posts per day or month are listed.

The comment number to which Doorman was referring in not associated with any individual user - it is site global and uniquely identifies any comment, so can be used to calculate the total number of posts in any time period.

Hey wait a minute, I resemble one of those few posters! Why are you hiding behind an AP handle? And if you've followed this forum for any amount of time, you'd know how most of us feel about AP's and especially AP's with home work questions and those how are to lazy to do their own research before posting on CR4. Would you be one of them??

You must be, you want someone else to do the research for you ......

Re: CR4 Activity History?

My wife hates this site.

I'm guilty of straying far away from engineering; however, I value the opinion of the engineering mindset...be it whatever; from car talk, fixing a lawnmower, politics, relationships...

I'm just happy to know that I'm not the only one that thinks this way. Nobody else around me does; and nobody cares about what makes things tick.

It goes beyond machines.

Agreed and generally so do I.

I quote, from your last post where you responded to Fredski in this manner "Ahhhhh (eyes rolling), It's always great when the first one to respond adds such intelligence to the discussion, which seems to be a syndrome here on CR4."

By the way, your question still resembled a homework request.

You could spend all day looking at the 'Who's Online' listing.

Seriously, I quite often have a look. Apart from being a quick way to find discussions that are currently hot, it's interesting. You'll have to figure why by doing so. Word of warning - be careful about posting Anon when not many people are online. Eventually somebody will spot the common denomenator. Just playing with you.

Might I ask why you want the info ? The question you ask seems more interesting than any possible answer to the question (and I suspect you know that you'll not get detailed data).

Not sure if it helps, but I'm posting to this discussion because I can't get to sleep. No need to worry though, I lack concentr

I am interested if participants in CR4 are increasing or decreasing in activity, is this a growing community or a declining one. There must be stats somewhere.

I'd say that participants such as you can only diminish participation by legitimate members wishing to participate in meaningful discussions.

You're now doing research for an anonymous poster with a superiority complex and an attitude?

Man, are you gullible, or what?

This has sunken too far into pit of absurdity for even me. Think I'll take another break and let the psycho keep ranting.

It's all because of you Lyn!!!!

Thank you!!!

Aw shucks, twernt nothin'.

If I cared, I might study the relative merits of posts started by AP's compared to those who were not afraid to identify themselves, instead if hiding behind anonymity.

But this vendetta is a total joke anyway. Speaking of a participation killer. Need a better example that this?

I'd try for an answer, but the responces seem to say a lot.

People (just my opinion) seem to enjoy some banter and weekend silliness. By and large such stuff is seen by members as usual weekend play. So far CR4 has a good mix of self-regulating serious and silly.

Nothing wrong with the question asked, though it's maybe easier to just think 'what the hey' and get on with it. Enjoy the serious and silly at the same time. Posting AP has diverted the question, maybe.

The Anon posting does have some value. If I wanted to seek technical opinon on my piles, I'd hardly...oh crap. That was invented for illustrative example only.

I don't think anyone should be complaining, considering that collectively, we are a bunch of people that man the site on a strictly volunteer basis, are always ready to promptly answer questions that pertain to our particular area of expertise, and happen to drift off into silliness, politics, or whatever, in between answering questions from people we will never know.

Anon probably didn't bother looking, but when Lyn isn't yelling at someone, (that fully deserves it), he is giving up his time to do google searches for them, and posting the relevant information.

I happen to ignore those threads, and if not for Lyn, I think most of them would get zero responses.

GA from me too. That's well put kramarat. But I too, have a hard time trying to understand why some people can't or won't do their own basic research before posting a question, or those that pose a question that's straight up school test question, or some one who claims to be in upper management and can't do their own analytical research. The best one was the guy who wanted someone to write his Engineering Thesis for him.

And then these people get pissed off at Lyn, because he pulls their covers off? I don't think you can accumulate 919 GA's screaming at people.

I did post as AP #2, just to see Anon had it in themselve's to wonder who AP #2 was.

Oh yeah!! Welcome to CR4 Anon #1

I just hate whining.

Anyone that has been in engineering, or just about anywhere in the working world for any length of time, should have already had their feelings hurt, crushed and abused, so many times that Lyn wouldn't even register on the scale.

They need to get over it. Real life sucks more than anything they will find on CR4.

Re: CR4 Activity History?

12/15/2013 6:43 AM

I am relatively new here, but this does requiire an answer, though not IMHO the one you might be expecting. Wherever you get your data, be sure to correlate participation with the decline / increase in the number of idiotic / abusive / inflammatory / uncivil questions, where most of the NON-respondents would simply say "oh, not again" and move on, not desiring to waste time on tripe and trolling.

I among others admit to not suffering fools nor animals lightly, and have too often sunk to the level of the poster, who no doubt enjoyed the process entirely. No matter what the personal problems and motives of anyone else are, I will keep trying to remain true to my own; those are the only ones truly in my power to change.

I also have not looked at the statistics because I frankly do not care about them. It is the content of the site and the opportunity to share and learn from others that attracts me, and will keep me on, despite leading questions and occasional abuse. The content may be changing due to the relative numbers of interesting versus useless ( IMHO ) questions changing, but sooner or later I hope the less useful contributors to this site will end up on ANSWERBAG and leave the really intriguing and thought provoking questions here for US to enjoy.

Alas there will always be flamers and trolls, as most of us here understand, so we will tolerate the children ( sometimes less cicvilly than we ought ) until a better solution to the ongoing issues is found.

MY solution would be to require that ALL posters submit a valid identification which would be known to the ADMIN and moderators only; and all posters would then know that even as AP's they would still be subject to the same rules including banning that the rest of us willingly accept. Outside the application of those rules, the privacy of the poster would be upheld. Perhaps a ban on an individual would be accompanied by their identity, that's an intriguing thought but probably not in keeping with the ideals here. I would not really care who they were except that they were gone.

Perhaps when everyone is subject to the same scrutiny and consequences there will be a better increase / decrease statistic going forward.

I thought about posting this anonymously, but it occurred to me that my voice, if I was to lend it to any discussion, deserves the honor of being identified as being mine; because it will be a voice ( mostly) in keeping with the intentions and ideals of the creators and ( most of the ) users of this site. Beyond that, I can choose like any other user of this site to be involved or not involved with any thread, or to sit on the sidelines and watch the show. > unsubscribe< does not necessarily mean >unfollow<.

Humbly yours,

L-I-T.

Admin has the IP addresses, email, etc. of everyone that posts. Anon is not anon to admin, only to us. So if someone decides to abuse the anon feature, admin can kick them off the site, whoever it may be.

It was really bad, back when unregistered guests could post.

I'm a little jealous of Lyn...he's had at least 3-4 threads dedicated to him.

Maybe I'm being too nice.

Re: CR4 Activity History?

Since this is a completely useless thread spawned by an arrogant unknown (to us) poster, I've decided that there is no reason not to participate.

Dear AP#1, I would have never entered your self-serving post on CO2 had you not insulted Fredski with your childish demand that you would determine the suitability of the responses given to your homework question.

I find it difficult to believe, absent any explanation on your part for asking the question in the first place, that your question was just for personal enrichment.

So, judging by past experience, that leaves us with students doing term papers or writing dissertations, reporters working on a story or someone hired as some type of consultant or paid researcher who would come here and ask us to do the research for them.

This statement, "I'm ideally looking for 3rd party references please in addition to your thoughts on this." In other words, please include the source of your research, so I don't have to bother verifying it.

The point being that your supposed insistence that only well reasoned, verifiable, intelligent answers be given would save you the effort of verification and having to separate the wheat from the chaff.

And finally, since you use the cowardly AP name, there is no way for anyone other than Admin. to look at your history and determine your relative worth to the forum, if any.

I, at least, stand directly behind all of my 24,546 posts, by name, so that the world may see who is responsible for them!

Why not go bother some other forum, or at least come out into the open, like a man and explain the reason for your vendetta.

Finally, after all this BS, the truth comes out:

From: Value of a 10% CO2 Reduction for the Coal Fired Power Plant?

My company is working on a solution to abate CO2 and I am just trying to get a value on the revenue side and then work on the cost side.

As I said, so much for any grand cause, he's in it for the money and using us to do his leg work.

Too bad a little disclosure up front was too much effort for this free loader.

And, we have no way of knowing who this loser even is.

All the more reason to do away with anonymous posters.!

I just had my first casualty from quitting smoking.

I usually use a plastic Bic lighter to open beer bottles, and I didn't have one handy, so I used a metal pair of toenail clippers.

Long story short....I didn't notice, but I broke the top of the bottle off with the lid.

When I took a sip of beer, I sliced my lip open. Bleeding like a stuck pig.

It took about 40 minutes, but I finally got it fixed by layering little pieces of toilet paper that were covered with clear wet/dry pool repair adhesive.

Saved a trip to the doc and a stitch.

It was a fresh Becks, and I had to throw that one away, just in case glass fell in the beer.

Lyn:

I'm a painter. I just grab whatever is in reach to open beers.

On a happy note...the pool repair stuff worked awesomely. I can talk, drink beer, smile, etc. Now that it's set up, it's waterproof and completely flexible.

My brother did that once at a meat processing plant. Too bad he is a Butcher and not an Engineer, he used WAY too much and to this day has cured glue beneath his skin that has migrated to the surface a few times!

Everything is good!

I don't dare smile real wide, but the cut healed together overnight, and my pool patch bandaid came right off.

I'm glad I found it. I went for superglue first, and the tube was dried out.

Just FYI...it was Loctite flexible adhesive for vinyl, fabric & plastic. (and now lips).

Quitting smoking makes you stupid?

You didn't have a plastic lighter, so you used a toenail clippers? I've got a fair imagination, but I can't picture how either of these implements would help.

I have callouses on my thumb and forefinger from opening beer bottle for the last 20-30 years.

Then I almost drank the glass shard!

Oh, I must be persona non grata to you.

You should spend this time with your family. They, at least, know who you are.

Happy Holidays!

My you are the most active unsubscribed person I have every seen, guess that one took you to 24560 posts I believe, impressive.

Here is entire post so it is not taken out of context:

Gavilan,

My company is working on a solution to abate CO2 and I am just trying to get a value on the revenue side and then work on the cost side.

But I agree with your comments, the world will not get greener unless there is an economical way to do it.

As the cost of hydrocarbon fuels increase and as governments monetize the adverse effects on the environment to the user there will be a crossover point with some new or existing technology where the savings / revenue outstrip the costs.

When I know more I'll post it on this thread.

"I have every seen,"

It's "I have ever seen".

Not sure what you mean by "unsubscribed person". Is that anything like the unwashed masses? If so, guilty. Don't be so testy. It's unbecoming of someone of your stature.

Rest assured that the members here, with identities, are able to think for themselves and will make decisions accordingly.

You have provided a modicum of entertainment, sometimes, but some up front honesty would have done you well here.

As someone with no identity, you must take what is given, without dictating the conditions under which it is offered, even if they are, "ways not aligned with the ethos of CR4" as you demand.

I'll stay "subscribed" now because I enjoy a good laugh now and then.

Cheers.

Lyn,

Thanks for the correction, I am not being testy and certainly not "snarky" as you are frequently described.

All I am saying is that you (speaking of spending time with the family) certainly post loads on CR4 and statistically you have the highest number of posts, but not the highest quality, that award goes to Tornado.

Anyway one would imagine that you would take how you respond to posters a little more seriously since you have the time to carpet bomb every forum here. In other words from a volume perspective you set the tone and from what I have seen over the past couple years the tone is being eroded by unwelcoming and rude posters such as yourself.

It would be interesting to know if CR4 is increasing or decreasing in user activity, that is my point with this thread.

It would be interesting to know why you don't have the courage and honesty to post as someone who would accumulate a retrievable history, as the legitimate members here do.

Until then, save the rebukes for those who know from whence they came.

As far as I am concerned you have no stature here and no right to preach to anyone for anything.

Let's just leave it at that.

I am glad you brought that up.

Why do you think the Admin leaves the Anon option on after repeated requests to remove?

Because there is an unfortunate cadre of "participants" to the forums who are rude and unwelcoming and there is certainly not a open culture on this site as there used to be. Therefore some questions either new, from the humble perspective of learning or just in left field will be stillborn unless there is an Anon function, then look what happens when it is used. So your behavior Lyn is partly why anon is still around.

When a select few feel like just because they post every 13 seconds they own the place (that was your 24,564th post, again hats off to your ability to dedicate so much time to an internet forum). That's when new ideas, new thoughts and new users tune out and go elsewhere. And the death spiral starts, more negative the culture, fewer users, less innovation, fewer people going out on a limb and then you pass the point of no return.

My impression is that CR4 is in decline primarily because of un-neighborly behavior such as yours.

Stop posting for a moment and start reflecting: your behavior clearly makes you somehow feel important in this little microcosm of society but is your behavior good for that society or just good for you?

I disagree. I for one will remain on the site because of my own desire to assist in any way I can, either from proposing a direct answer or suggesting an alternate approach to the OP. My reward is personal satisfaction in the knowledge that I tried to be positive and help out, and not diminished by anyone who does not care for my opinion.

Having said that, Its my opinion that CR4 will go on in its way, regardless of anyones hurt feelings or poor attitudes ( not referring to LYN, all due respect ). A decline or increase in participation is much more likely to be the result of an admin change to the format or working of the site that makes it less interesting or harder to use than it is now. ( take for example answerbag ).

On the contrary stand to your assertion that LYN drives people away, I've enjoyed his verbal jousting with idiots, but it IS your utter waste of bandwidth and time to satisfy what has to be a personal easter-egg hunt in favor of shutting him (or others you deem like him) up which would drive me away.

But since I find LYN's answers to you (along with others of similar ilk) amusing, I put up with your transparent stupidity just to see what the next exchange of long bombs brings. And so far, I'd say you are batting zero for anything EXCEPT flame-baiting. On that score, you are doing very well, having attracted more flames than anyone I've seen on CR4 in a long time.

And as for your view that if you used your own name you'd be driven away, you deserve to be driven away. It's only our inability to reach through your self-righteous shell that has kept us from doing so.

Get lost! Or get some guts!

Clear enough?

The right shape of overbite will solve this problem, if it didn't result from it in the first place.

This thread sounds like a lot of about nothing.......

And now I added more of the same.
