What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

10/05/2009 1:57 PM

I've got some sayings that I use with workmates to help move things along. I'll tell you mine, if you'll tell me yours. Some of mine are original, and some are not.

My Safety Speech, "Be Safe." is not original, but what I start a day with.

Another is: "It's not always how efficient you are, but whether you keep moving or not."

"It's my plan, and I might change it!"

"Progress Through Fun!"

Was Sparkstation one of them? Naaa.....

He would have

1. Asked for the wall thickness

2. Who was the manufacturer?

3. What is the floor on which it stands made of?

4. etc, etc.

He would have included an animated bath tub braking device and it would have been over in a flash. Him surrendering? Naaa.....

Word sez Sparky now heads-up a state-of-the-art, animated-GIF studio at a remote, undisclosed location somewhere in beautiful downtown KiwiLand. Black Projects, mostly, and it seems he's discovered a way to create highly-selective GIFs that drive only certain people insane - cyberterrorists, mainly - rather than ones that simply drive everybody insane, like the ones he tested on us.

I think it was Basil Fawltey who quipped (with ref to "a womans work is never done"); "a womans work is never delegated". He was, naturally, being sarcastic.

What are Your Favorite Sayings about Bath-Breaking Technique

10/23/2009 1:40 PM

Before you break your next tub, first practice on your car.

If you happen to like your car, then practice on your brother-in-law's car.

If you happen to like your brother-in-law's car, then practice on your brother-in-law.

Or you can start with the last step and simply keep the cars. You can always sell them on eBay.

Australian opossums are a bit different from the possums around here in North Carolina, US. I forget exactly why now. They are definitely strange animals in all cases. I've written or spoken of this before, but it was really weird to me how our cats accepted them as good company.

I mean I found a possum and our killer cat sitting on a bed together in the quest room as if they were bosom buddies. Their equanimity was shocking. I mean it was disturbing that I was the only one upset about the visitation.

It was like I was supposed to get them some snacks and tune in their favorite TV show so they could hang out and discuss common interests.

Do all cats and possums get along?

"Why can't we all just get along?"

No country ever taxed itself into prosperity.

It's a great life, if you don't weaken.

We are all only "temporarily" able bodied.

The world wasn't made for "You".

Feelings aren't facts.

Deal with it.

Re: What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

"Work with gravity, not against it."

Explanatory note: I have had many jobs, and worked with many people, and have sometimes been baffled by either designs, or factory floor systems where workers were required to work against gravity.

It is no wonder many dream of living in a world where there is no gravity.

Still, we really need it, and need to know how to use it.

As far as trips to Mars and out into Space, I am baffled that while protection from Cosmic Rays is addressed, the need for gravity to maintain our bodies out there is not recognized as a problem to be solved if we are to actually be successful at living and working in the Solar System.

In fact I consider it a torture of astronauts that they are subjected to longer periods of life without gravity, than is healthy for their bones.

ATTENTION ALL EMPLOYEES

It has come to management's attention that people are dying on the job and failing to fall down. This practice must stop as it becomes impossible to distinguish between the dead and the natural movement of the staff.

Those found dead in an upright position will be dropped from the payroll.

Sign in Montgomery Inn's men's room, Cincinnatti, Ohio - "We Aim To Please. You Aim Too, Please!"

Professionally hand-lettered sign in truck stop men's room, Julesburg, Colorado - "Please Do Not Throw Cigarette Butts In Urinal. It Makes Them Soggy And Hard To Light" (Note: I wouldn't know. I've never tried to light a urinal)

Sign in motel room, Pecos, Texas - "Please Do Not Use Our Towels To Clean Your Guns. Bring Your Own Towels"

Scrawled on a stall door in a truck stop men's room, Fort Collins, Colorado, lamenting the incredibly, unbelievably tiny stalls - "I Don't Get This Close To My Wife Even When We Make Love"

Sign evidently intended to conceal a well-worn spot on wall directly above urinal at a Ready-Mix plant in Houston, Texas - "Bang Head Here"

Fellowship of the Unashamed

"I'm part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have Holy Spirit power. The dye has been cast. I have stepped over the line. The decision has been made. I'm a disciple of His.

"I won't look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still.

"My past is redeemed; my present makes sense; my future is secure."

"I'm finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed visions, mundane talking, cheap living, and dwarfed goals."

"I no longer need preeminence, prosperity, position, promotions, plaudit, or popularity."

"I no longer have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded."

"I now live by faith, lean on His presence, walk by patience, lift by prayer, and labor by power."

"My face is set, my gait is fast, my goal is heaven, my road is narrow, my way rough, my companions few, my Guide reliable, my mission clear."

"I cannot be bought, compromised, detoured, lured away, turned back, deluded, or delayed."

"I will not flinch in the face of sacrifice, hesitate in the presence of the adversary, negotiate at the table of the enemy, ponder at the pool of popularity, or meander in the maze of mediocrity."

"I won't give up, shut up, let up, until I have stayed up, stored up, prayed up, paid up, preached up for the cause of Christ."

"I am a disciple of Jesus. I must go till He comes, give till I drop, preach till all know, and work till He stops me."

"And, when He comes for His own, He will have no problems recognizing me -- my banner will be clear."

["Written By A Young Afrikan Pastor And Tacked On The Wall Of His House," Distributed By The 'League Of Prayer', P.O. Box 4038, Montgomery, Alabama]

With God's precious promises in my heart, I shall die by that motto if that is God's Will.

However, I want to remind everyone in the LGBT community that I have never threatened any person and never advocated any violence toward any group. I simply wish to draw LGBT people to the loving cross of Jesus Christ, Who can forgive all sin and deliver you to Heaven.

We seek to draw you to the love of Jesus.

However, I want to remind everyone in the LGBT community that I have never threatened any person and never advocated any violence toward any group. I simply wish to draw LGBT people to the loving cross of Jesus Christ, Who can forgive all sin and deliver you to Heaven.

How nice of you!

By making this distinction are you trying prove your tolerence?

"I no longer have to be right, first, tops, recognized, praised, regarded, or rewarded."

Wasn't the 1973 TV series "McCloud" filmed at Loch Shiel? I liked the bar scene in one episode where Bond asks Lurch, "Hey Trebeck, what's the difference between you and a mallard with a cold?" Lurch shrugs. "Well, one's just a sick duck and I don't remember the rest of the joke, but your mother's a whore!" Or am I thinking of Dennis Weaver and Will Ferrell in Shawshank Redemption?

Never been to an orgy myself, but did like the line from a Steely Dan song: "While the poor people sleeping, the Stars come out at night. They don't give a f*** about anybody else." Steely Dan was the name of a certain sort of dildo.

As far as the graffiti on the Portland Maine bathroom wall, it was very likely written by a sailor, and not some hollywood actor.

There is intellectual graffiti now and then. I gave an example, of the best I had seen.

I come from sailors and priests and have some awe of all of life that is a gift, so recognize a good saying when I see it.

Re: What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

10/31/2009 2:08 AM

My all-time favorites are from my Dad. They have each saved my life.

"If you're not under it, it can't fall on you." Given as instruction on safe auto tire changing hand position, and applied throughout my life resulting in close-calls that would have been deadly otherwise.

"Test it, watch someone else test it, or don't touch it - it's your life."

The main event involved being fired for refusing to work on a 4160V switch just because the 45 year veteran who "knows this stuff like the back of my hand" said it was safe - but not tested. My response was that since I was fired, I could do as I chose to do, went and brought the 'hot-stick' in with the tester on it. The foreman was on an aluminum ladder ready to rest his arm on the buss to install a knock-out punch in the hole he had just drilled. When the meter a foot from his face went to full scale, he had a bit of trouble getting his knees to work as he descended the ladder. He tried to re-hire me dozens of times in the next few minutes, but I decided to let well enough alone.

If asked, I will certainly name my father as the wisest man I have ever known.

Regards, CJMcGill

"Insanity is the number one disease."

"Food is the number one ingredient for peace."

Don't fight with strangers.

-somehow these go together.

I was over there in the other thread I started about Top Ten Diseases. Next up: Challenge Question: Gravity Machine needed for our spaceships. Bone breaking is a problem. Big pay offered. Anyway, I'm wondering if a "Gravity Bath" is the solution. We got these Astronauts going to Mars and spinning the whole ship on cables is unwieldy and hard to steer and land. So then how about on the ship you have a "Gravity Bath", so AstroCosmos can get in and get a Gravity dose? Couples could go in there and have sex maybe, and keep their bones inshape at the same time.

What do you think?

-by the way, the courts say I'm sane, everybody else is suspect, really, I've been through the mill. Certified sane! Bet you can't say that.

Not really sure what a Gravity Bog is since the link was not blue. Please explain why you now prefer it, over the Gravity Bath, which no one would really need unless they are living in outerspace.

I was prompted to look at the Bath Breaking Thread and noted there was no prospect ever that this thread would ever go into that number which is into the thousands.[]p] It is right up there in posts, up into something like 39 hundred.

Dogs are reported to understand 250 words, or phrases, so I doubt that we need more.

Here's to US!!!!

No matter what our kids and the new generation think about us,
WE ARE AWESOME !

OUR LIFE IS LIVING PROOF !

To Those of Us Born
1930 - 1979

At the end of this email is a quote of the month by Jay Leno. If you don't read anything else, please
Read what he said.

Very well stated, Mr. Leno.

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's, 50's,
60's and 70's!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered
With bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no child-proof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes -
We had baseball caps,
Not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children - we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires, and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter, and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid - made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were OKAY.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill,
Only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's,
No surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones,
No personal computers,
No Internet and no chat rooms.

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We would get spankings with wooden spoons, switches, ping-pong paddles, belt/belt-buckles, or just a barehand and no one would call child services to report abuse.

We ate worms and mud pies
Made from dirt, and
The worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't make the team had to learn
To deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility; we learned how to deal with it all..

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives "for our own good".

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?

The quote of the month is by
Jay Leno:

'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us..go ahead and delete this.

For the rest of us...pass this on.

Plus we rode our bicycles in the DDT Fog on oil soaked dirt roads watching all the Moms smash sunning snakes flatter than paper with shovels and wondering why people in suits dying in the Edge of Night on the Soap TV coal mine weren't dirty.

Once we were safe fear ruled the land.

We did not have Play stations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, No surround-sound or CD's, No cell phones, No personal computers, No Internet and no chat rooms.

WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

I predicted 30+ years ago (before X-box, etc. was even invented, but after hand-held calculators were) that we were rearing a generation of "button-pushers."

Kids don't know how to build things like go-carts, they don't hunt and fish, etc. as much as their parents' generations, and that's a shame. We should take some responsibility for that though -- after all, we're (us folks over 40) the ones who reared them, and we didn't teach them the stuff that we so enjoyed as kids.

I spent my summers sleeping out in my treefort, fishing, swimming, cutting lawns for money, and riding my bicycle everywhere. I knew the woods around my parents' house like the back of my hand for miles.

Until I turned into my middle thirties, I believe I had spent just as much time outside as inside, and only because I was forced to attend school and later, work.

<YAAAWWWN>

That's been doing the email rounds for about 10 years (I have a copy from at least 9 years ago), along with the one about "those entering Uni this year were born after the CD took over from vinyl" etc etc.

Go to bed sleepyhead...

It being old don't change a thing as they say the more things change the more things remain the same and we'll always have old-fuddy-duds around too
