What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

10/05/2009 1:57 PM

I've got some sayings that I use with workmates to help move things along. I'll tell you mine, if you'll tell me yours. Some of mine are original, and some are not.

My Safety Speech, "Be Safe." is not original, but what I start a day with.

Another is: "It's not always how efficient you are, but whether you keep moving or not."

"It's my plan, and I might change it!"

"Progress Through Fun!"

The French managed to keep their secret weapon out of German hands for the entire war - the prototypes of the 2CV!

During that time, all the Germans could come up with was the VW Beetle.

Whatever he was he was determined, and succesfully, I might add, to maintain control of the French franc and French banks as the financial base of his country. Had he not France would have become the target of exploitation and eventual financial ruin. Anthony Eden on the other hand................

Anthony Eden on the other hand................
Generally is made out to be a gullible fool, yet maybe he was clever manging to stall the inevitable war long enough so that England could build up its airforce to protect the country (and Mr DeGaulle.)
But seriously tho' folks I think there are plenty of missconceptions about all the key figures of the time...Churchill wrote his own history to ensure a good press, but my Mum won't forgive him for ordering troops to open fire on miners (I don't even know if she's right...but I'm not about to argue with my Mum!)
I think we and the French have a historical enmity but also a sneaky regard for eachother.

French Military History in a Nutshell

Gallic Wars: Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.

Hundred Years War: Mostly lost, saved at last by a female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare - France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman.

Italian Wars: Lost. France becomes the first and only country ever to lose two wars when fighting Italians.

Wars of Religion: France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots.

Thirty Years' War: France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.

The Dutch War: Tied.

War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War: Lost, but claimed as a tie. Deluded Frogophiles the world over label the period as the height of French Military Power.

War of the Spanish Succession: Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved ever since.

American Revolution: In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare: France only wins when America does most of the fighting.

French Revolution: Won, primarily due to the fact that the opponent was also French.

The Napoleonic Wars: Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.

The Franco-Prussian War: Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.

WWI: Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States. Thousands of French women find out what it's like not only to sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.

WWII: Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.

War in Indochina: Lost. French forces plead sickness, take to bed with Dien Bien Flu.

Algerian Rebellion: Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a Western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare - We can always beat the French. This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Eskimos.

War on Terrorism: France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe.

My point being that Kris unfortunately used poorly chosen words which would serve to offend those people and their families who have fought bravely. The politicos/business leaders whose interests are at stake are well served regardless of who wins or loses.

It's actually a size 12, but I'm guessing such measures vary across the globe. Yah, they be differing !

A carefully considered, well-reasoned and logical response, to be sure. Perhaps the only one possible in light of that particular combination of words.

Naturally one wonders that if the order of Jake's lines had been, say, reversed (whilst maintaining the current word order), should Queens U. have responded by promptly removing the sinks from the wall opposite the urinals or every other left-hand stall panel as seen from the end user's point of view? And what about the knobs on the Hot side of the faucets? They do have hot water at Queens University, non?

And how should King's College have reciprocated?

Kings' College is a military college next door to Queens and is also where the crusty uppity-ups send their chinless embarrasments in the hope of breeding extra bone density into the lineage.

I rather doubt that Kris used Poorly-Chosen Words with that particular objective in mind. Look, if Kris' objective was to be offensive, you can rest assured that he would have carefully drawn from his extensive cache of Well-Chosen Words in order to effect that objective. Both kinds of words are different from ordinary, Non-Chosen Words, of course, and from Un-Chosen Words.

Or so I've heard.

"... once a year people come hunting down your family."

We have wild turkeys on our ranch and, no, Kris, they are not relations.

We absolutely forbid hunting on our property and we have "Posted - No Trespassing" signs indicating as much. In Texas trespassers can be shot - and killed - on sight, no questions asked, but God help 'em if they're caught poaching.

We've got a bunch of other critters here, too - including a trophy buck that hangs around and is probably responsible for the proliferation of fawns lately - and possums, raccoons, armadillos, fire ants, scorpions, Texas coral snakes, copperheads, diamondbacks, buzzards, horned toads (lizards, actually), geckos, salamanders, javelinas, Chuck Will's Widows, screech owls, Texas scissor-tailed flycatchers, great horned owls and one very rare bird that I won't identify for reasons I won't specify.

And, for unwelcome guests, rock salt courtesy of a 10-gauge, double-barrel shotgun.

For the wild turkeys here on the ranch, Thanksgiving is just another day.

What, like on the wall ?

I had to look up 'trophy buck' and I'm still not sure ()- is it a variety of whitetail, so called because they are hunted for 'trophy's? Killing for sport makes me wanna puke. If I were in your position, I'd shoot poachers too.

I'm quite envious of all those creatures you have around (even the nasty ones). Very cool

Hey........likewise my piece o' the patch. No hunting! Bear, deer, moose, lynx, raccoons and a wolf den last few years.

A few years back there was a serious winter die-off of starving deer due to deep snow and too many deer. Presently getting the Indians to hunt them and distribute the meat to food banks.

We were looking at a house on 3 acs last week. The house was built into the side of the hill. The basement/crawlspace had an access door. We came around the corner of the house & startled a Buck, his antlers gouged the door in his haste to leave. We've been back several times & he's been about everytime... along with his harum 3 does & 5 or so fawns. The neighborhood used to be an orchard & was subdivided into 3-8 ac plots. There is also a juvinile bear judging by the tracks & apple peel laden shits. The real estate listing describes abundant wildlife

We live in a similar area bordering forest service or conservatorship owned land.

As far as I can tell the deer are Rats with hooves, judging by the havoc they perpetrate on my garden if I forget & leave the gate open

I thought the standard in Texas for shooting someone was self defense or

Yep....sounds just like my place. Sometimes not sure whether I've fenced the buggers out or fenced myself in.

When I first started doing maple syrup I hung buckets on the trees. The deer really appreciated this and drank most of the sap.

Try finding three reputable people in Texas.

Speaking of Texas...

Q: Why wasn't Jesus born in College Station? (home of TX A&M Univ. 'Aggies')

A: God couldn't find three wise men and a virgin.

My work here is done.

"...and we'll all eat Freedom Fries in the interests of the Bushist WMD deception ? C'mon now..."

And we swallowed that story lock, stock and barrel, just like we always do, didn't we? But it didn't start with GWB's WMD fiasco as an excuse to invade Iran. It started with Afghanistan.

For years the US has been eager to build a pipeline leading from the Caspian Basin's six billion bbls in reserves to the Persian Gulf. The only route was through Afghanistan, of course, but Afghanistan wouldn't have any of it and would not negotiate with us. If they were going to pull it off, Dubya's handlers would have to formulate a different plan, but this plan had to made palatable enough to secure widespread and unquestioning support from the electorate. So we "Burned the Reichstag."

This is an old and extremely effective deception that dates back at least as far as the early Roman Empire. And it works, provided the governed are willing to turn a blind eye to the considerable body of evidence to the contrary, content to denounce as "conspiracy theorists" those willing to look behind the curtain, content to accept the Official Version and more than content to continue investing their blind faith in bad leaders, calling it Patriotism.

Actually the forum was sort of bogged down and I was wondering if I had run out of ideas for fun thread starts similar to my questions of the past, like top ten Sci Fi movies, or Important Books for rebuilding Civilization.

Then the question crossed my mind and I posted it.

Then Ky wrote me suggesting it would make a good book, and I agree that it would, though getting from where we are here, to there, is not clear to me.

I believe I mentioned that my brother used to tell Yankees who asked directions, "You can't get there from here."

Europium, It has been awhile since I shoveled out a horse stall, however it has not been that long since I spent the day digging a ditch.

Truly digging the drainage ditch was alleviated by the radio on my head tuned to a State of Things NPR show wherein Frank Stastio was interviewing some Duke Physicist about the String Theory prediction of the great void prediction of a great void, that had been discovered.

Sometimes it is pretty hard to keep your spirits up.

Truly I wish I was still strong enough to dig ditches or shovel shit.

Truly Europium you and I have sort of known each other for at least three years now and you ought to know by now whatever I know, I learned the hard way.

Some years ago a friend was digging a hole in his yard in order to get to a leaking pipe, or something like that. The hole was deeper than he was tall, and up on the grass next to the hole was his radio, tuned to some religious station.

My friend was very, very discouraged - not only about the broken pipe but about things in general, which hadn't been going well, but mostly about his job, which really (and I mean really) sucked. Suddenly the radio preacher burst in upon his musings with such force that you'd think he was talking to him: "Have you ever felt soooo lowww that you had ta look UP to see the ground?"

Yeah.

.

"...you ought to know by now whatever I know, I learned the hard way."

I do indeed, and I suspect we both have not a few honorary PhDs from the School of Hard Knocks.

All righty then!

Do you think that lady really has any insight into my problem with the coherence problem for my solar panel sandwiched reflecting antenna intended to either ion sail the spaceship, or grab holographically encoded holograms off photons?

(actually I only thought of doing a sandwich to get a phase shift sort of reflective thing in an attempt to figure a way to overcome the coherence problem.)

I've got some doubts about the veracity of the reports.

Freezing temps don't seem likely to me to stop light.

When I got married I got the Bishop to approve of a Special Service, where along with the standard service I threw the I Ching. Got Time of Decrease (Sun 41). Wow. -I had to put a good face on that from the pulpit. -no way out, I asked for it.

Quit going to Church when they wouldn't approve of another Special Service. Have studied the sleep habits of cats and think they have a good idea.

What's up with Jorrie?

P.S. Just to somehow get to on topic on a thread I started about helpful sayings applied in the day with workmates at work: "If you want to work with normal people, get another job."

Work is the little I do between the greater parts of loving the life I was created for.

It's a big show, get on it. -Film set saying intended to spur someone to pay attention.
