What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

10/05/2009 1:57 PM

I've got some sayings that I use with workmates to help move things along. I'll tell you mine, if you'll tell me yours. Some of mine are original, and some are not.

My Safety Speech, "Be Safe." is not original, but what I start a day with.

Another is: "It's not always how efficient you are, but whether you keep moving or not."

"It's my plan, and I might change it!"

"Progress Through Fun!"

"That's why we call it "RESEARCH!" "

"The view never changes unless you're the lead dog."

"When you've reached rock bottom, quit digging!"

"When all else fails, read the directions."

"God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth. That means we're supposed to listen twice as much as we talk."

"The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese."

"Change brings opportunity to those who are prepared to accept it."

"We'll burn that bridge when we get to it."

"One person's problem is another person's opportunity."

"Don't do a business deal you'd be ashamed to read about on the front page."

It's the benefit of the idea, not the credit, that counts.

There's 24 hours in a day. If that's not enough, work nights.

I can lead the horse to water. I can stick his head in the trough. But I should never ever be expected to suck his backside to make him drink.

You plant corn, you get corn.

What have you done to protect the public today? (nuke plant only)

Work smarter, not harder.

Politics fits into ohms law somewhere (when explaining corrective actions that are pleasing to management but have nothing to do with the cause)

Re: What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

These are some of my own thoughts .......... might be something useful here.....

Keeping score: What you do for yourself is just body maintenance and self improvement. What you do for others is what counts. …….EW

Wealth sought after directly is seldom achieved. The shortest route to the peak is the steepest and offers the most spectacular fall should you lose your footing. …….EW

When objectivity and critical thinking fail we still have our cherished beliefs. They can comfort us in our last hours. ……… EW

The light of media publicity shines indiscriminatly on any who would put themselves in it's range. ……….EW

I have learned the futility of arguing with people who exist in their own universe of beliefs constructed from an alternative logic assembled to provide easy answers to difficult questions." ………..EW

The man who bets his career on one technology or market force is a fool. ……..EW

Environmentalism is an affectation of the rich supported by the patience of the poor and hungry. This is not a condemnation; it is a simple statement of fact. ……… EW

Today I feel like a minority in a ship of fools, shouted down by a hoard of shallow thinkers. ………. EW

Perhaps the day for a return to civility will come when we can pack iron in public. Until then I refuse to suffer fools lightly. ………….EW

Life is what happens to you while you're planning for the future. ……Anon ........ Or perhaps life is what happens while the self absorbed search for perfection. …..EW

If we creative model builders didn't have the phenomena of parallel universes to invent and populate we'd soon be driven mad by the worshipers of logic and the powers of rational thinking. ………EW

Better to learn from a real expert and get it right the first time than learn by your mistakes. …….EW

The universe and the laws of physics have no respect for the limits of human perception. ……….EW

Life is full of potential pitfalls, whether they be connecting with the wrong people, suffering a debilitating injury or something else. Some combination of intelligence, wisdom and street smarts protect us from such pitfalls. If a shortage of such attributes causes someone to suffer a loss so be it. Life is cruel and each of us is the captain of his own ship.

G'morning, all,

Here are a few that come to mind:

1. "Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you."---line from Star Trek: TNG

2. "TANSTAFFL: There Ain't No Such Thing as a Free Lunch"---from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, R. A. Heinlein

3. "Don't worry, we'll burn that bridge when we get to it."

4. "This thing is so messed up MacGyver couldn't fix it."

When you're up to your arse in alligators, it's tough to remember that your initial objective was to drain the swamp!

The Stone Age ended, not due to lack of stones; The Oil Age will end, not due to lack of oil.

The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese in the trap.

"To do is to be" - Sartre

"To be is to do" - Descartes

"Do be do be do" - Sinatra

~

Cogito ergo hum

~

Winston Churchill returns home hopelessly drunk. He collapses at the foot of the stairs. His wife Clementine is at the top.

"Winston, you are a disgraceful dunken sop."

"Yes madam, I may be. However you are ugly, and in the morning I will be sober...."

~

Winston and Clementine at breakfast.

"What would you say Winston if I told you I was having a voracious sexual affair with your best friend?"

"I would say, madam, that you were a lesbian."

It is in the admission of ignorance and the admission of uncertainty that there is a hope for the continuous motion of human beings in some direction that doesn't get confined, permanently blocked, as it has so many times before in various periods in the history of man. -Richard Feynman

Some people are like slinkys. Not good for much, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

It's not an optical illusion. It just looks like one.

There is a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.

There is nothing fool-proof to a sufficiently talented fool..

When all else fails......Punt!

Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.
-- Euripides

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.

One of my favorites on the rarity of true friendship:

Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all right out, just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then with the breath of kindness blow the rest away.

Life is a journey not a guided tour.

Dont treat us like mushrooms, feeding us crap and keeping us in the dark.

It's called work, because it's not fun. If it was fun, it'd be called...uh...fun.

'It's a triumph of presentation over content'

Applied to almost anything to do with marketing, customer service, politics...
Heck almost anything these days.

Jeez last night the BBC news managed to take 10minutes, to say 'the Tories have an Army General on board'... mind they said it very prettilly from 4 different locations with lots of different people saying the same thing.
I don't need 'em to tell me the same thing endlessly...I mean I have a wife for that. (See also 'Yes dear')

A few news agencies want to prove they can provide the fastest service so bad they sometimes report what they believe maybe happening because they don't really have anything to report.

About 20 years ago someone gave me a paper with the "Six Phases of a Project" on it. Over the years I have lost the paper, found it, lost it and found it many times. Often I feared that it was lost for good. I'm happy to say that I have found it again. I'm sad to say that in the last 20+++ years the list has been correct far too many times.

THE SIX PHASES OF A PROJECT

1. Enthusiasm

2. Disillusionment

3. Panic

4. Search for the Guilty

5. Punishment of the Innocent

6. Praise & Honors for the Non-Participants

Re: What are Your Favorite Sayings about Work & Life?

I think I may be out of my sayings, either of my own, or those collected.

Ky suggested that the set would make a good book.

Such books do sell, for I have one of Taxi Driver Truisms, or whatever, it's somewhere in the house.

Some have mentioned where they first heard a saying, and from whom. For every saying I either made up, or cleaved to, I could probably write a chapter.

Late at night or really onto in the morning one night I was with the Captain as we and the Mechanics were trying to get a fuel pump put on a DC 4, for a freight haul out to the islands at sunrise.

One of the most stalwart mechanics flagged and said something to the effect of, "We can't do it in time."

Captain Boy said to him, "We are not here to figure out how not to do it."

I'd use only half an exclamation point, for some things are said well at half volume and passion with compatriots from a real leader.

We found a good pump, and got that plane off the ground with what it needed.

WE ARE NOT HERE TO FIGURE OUT HOW "NOT" TO DO IT.

When I asked someone to print it out, it came back, "We are here to figure out how not to do it."

Such events frighten me.

Take this job and shove it

I ain't workin' here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was workin' for
You better not try to stand in my way
As I'm a-walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more

I've been workin' in this factory
From nigh on fifteen years
All this time I watched my woman
Drownin' in a pool of tears
And I've seen a lot of good folk die
Who had a lot of bills to pay
I'd give the shirt right off of my back
If I had the nerve to say

Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was workin' for
You better not try to stand in my way
As I'm a-walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more

Well that foreman, he's a regular dog
The line boss, he's a fool
Got a brand new flat-top haircut
Lord, he thinks he's cool
One of these days, I'm gonna blow my top
And that sucker, he's gonna pay
Lord I can't wait to see their faces
When I get up the nerve to say

Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was workin' for
You better not try to stand in my way
As I'm a-walkin' out the door.
Take this job and shove it
I ain't workin' here no more

Take this job and shove it

Gee Europium, Sure we ought not get back to physics? I swear I read a few months ago that some woman had the coherence problem on the run.

Jorrie says multiple universes demarked by different constants for the speed of light is fanciful. The great voids don't separate the different universes, but are just holes in it.

Ever heard Two Dollar Pistols?

I suppose I ought to sing it myself, the song I wrote for John Howie, "Daddy Died In A Hotel Room, and I guess I will too, I won't be blaming Daddy, I'll be blaming you."- It goes on, but I thought it was sufficiently depressing for a Country Ballad.

Now I'm off topic on my own blog thread start.

Here's one: I was looking for a job when I found this one.

That saying is attributed to oil rig roughnecks.

"Jorrie says multiple universes demarked by different constants for the speed of light is fanciful."

Just as off-topic as redneck music, but I don't see why different universes - each having its own value for c - is any more or less fanciful than a belief that this Universe is The Only One. We can't prove there are others, of course, but we can't prove there aren't others, either. Heck, for all I know, if there are other universes, the concept of "the speed of light" may be completely meaningless in some of them, or maybe all of them, except this one. If other universes exist, their structure, laws, organization, physics and what-have-you may be so completely alien that they have no counterpart in our universe, even in principle.

Back to redneck music (and boy, do I mean Redneck). I'm gonna make you guess the title and author of this one:

She used to call me 'Baby'... I thought she was such a lady
But my how things have changed since times moved on

I gave her my last dollar... And now all she'll do is holler
Oh my life has become a country song

I've learned she can resist me by the way she always disses me
And comes to bed at night, with that cold cream on

Sometimes I might feel frisky but these days it's just too risky

It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long
All day Long
It goes all day long

If a tree fell in the forest, She didn't hear it, would I still be wrong

I guess I should admit it
She ain't never gonna quit it

It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long

[spoken]
Man I remember when her eyes used to be so blue and shiny
God you outta see what's happened to her hiney
(Her what?) her hiney
Man that thing is big enough to land a small plane on.
(Small plane?) I'm tellin' ya!
I used to roll her in the the clover, (mmm hmm) but my god those days are over
(Halleluia!)

It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out All Day Long
All day Long
She goes all day long

If some day they drop the big one,
I'd say "Sweet Jesus, she's gonna finally leave me alone!"

It's alright if we say it
'cause the radio won't play it.

Now singin' about dogs named 'Ol' Blew' are de rigueur for folk music - and its okay to put them in yer Country tune an' all - but if yer gonna write convincin' Country lyrics, you gotta say something about Mama, trains, trucks, prison and gettin' drunk:

WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MAMA GOT OUT OF PRISON

AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN

BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK

SHE GOT RUNNED OVER BY A DAMNED OL' TRAIN*

... and then if you really wanna put some icin' on the cake, you kin' say something about yer trailer gettin' snatched up by that damned ol' tornado last night.

Good thing you were face down in the barn stone drunk, pukin' yer guts out - as usual. And, by the way, it's a good thing you have a barn. Tornadoes ignore 'em so long as there's a good trailer to be had somewhere nearby (the smaller and trashier the better). Tornadoes and trailers go together, kinda like a hand and glove, cops and donuts, my neighbor and that damned ewe he stole last week.

And you gotta write the song so that when it's played backward, you get yer trailer back, yer mama back, yer truck back, it stops raining, yer mama goes back to prison and you sober up.

Then you kill that two-bit sucker what ran over Ol' Blew.

OK, you are the master of mirth. It'll be a full week before I can stop laughing.. Apart from dead dogs/lost jobs/runaway wives/hurricane hit houses, are there any more country classic themes ? It's not a genre we get in GB (though we do have some fairly shameful stuff). Tell me more - eager ears are keen to hear

*just to make ammends.

My singular contribution (so as not to get deleted) ; "The grass is always greener.." (That may be truer in Cal where I here It's a sizeable chunk of the economy. Given that Cal has one of the world's biggest economies, that's a fair old spliff). Ill be bac....yeah, later man.

I'd almost bet Anthony Burgess did time in L.A.

five consecutive days of Pink Floyd concerts

It was probably only one night, but seemed like five. A damn good five I'd reckon though.

Talking of coincidence, Arthur C denied any connection between HAL and IBM (ie each letter bumped up one), but it is a bit spooky.. One of my fave bloggers, Simon Singh, is currently runing a competition to find the longest encryprtion of that type. I'm surte he won't mind me posting it up here (his monthly newsletter is a great read (and his battle in the libel courts is a must for anybody into free speech and fighting pseudo-science);

7. New Puzzle Competition

Lisa Wadley from the University of Glamorgan is working on a student project and asked me if I knew the longest word that could be Caesar-shifted to form another word. For example, COLD turns into FROG if each letter is replaced by the letter 3 places further down the alphabet. Or DOLLS turns into WHEEL if each letter is Caesar-shifted by 19 places. But can you help Lisa and find a word that is longer than 5 letters long?
Please send your answer to competition@simonsingh.net – put your answer in the subject header and your address in the body of the email. The closing date for entries is October 14 – Lisa's project deadline is approaching fast. The winner (whoever comes up with the longest pair of English words) will receive a copy of "Isaac Newton" by James Gleick.

Cheerio,
Simon.

*********

Bit late of me to post that, but people may enjoy, and his newsletter/website are both well worth checking out.

Several years ago, I got to be friends with people at the local supermarket. One morning I walked in and one of them said "How's it going Bill?". I replied "LOUSY!! My wife left me, the lawn all died, and the dog is pregnent!!".

Couple of weeks later the same person asked me "Are things getting any better for you Bill?" I said "Hell No! The dog had 12 puppies and she left!"

The devil made me do it. Actually, I was single at the time... didn't have a lawn... and the dog had been fixed.

Bill

I like the one about endangered species . . . "The reason that there are endangered species is because they taste good," which just reminded me of an acronym along the same lines. "PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals." That ought to get PETA members of CR4 up in arms!

"The reason that there are endangered species is because they taste good..."

I dunno about that. For my part, I prefer chicken. Tastes just like Arctic Snowy Owl.

Gorgeous bird. Why would anyone want to harm something that elegant?

They eat meat 'rare' in Texas. What was the line in that film...."just de-horn it, wipe it's *** and send it in".

"Shave it an' hold a match under it," is what Gramps always said, and boy did he mean it. Ugh.

Oddly enough, it seems most of our servers are yankees - folks from up north of the Red River (you gotta draw the line somewhere) - and often need a bit of explanation (and occasionally a little less Northern Charm and a little more Southern Efficiency).

One server was a Pheasant Plucker, though, and understood immediately.

She had a great smile, too.

Well, you're partly right . . . Southern charm and efficiency is closer to the truth.

P. S. I agree with your statement about your neighbors across the channel.

History and events not accurately portrayed by Churchillian chauvinism. eg Poles not allowed to march in V-Day parade, Czech air force pilots flying for WW2 effort only recognized recently, Canadian battalion at Hong Kong was last to surrender (Jap war records) not as Brit history records, Royalist Russian army fighting for Brits in Italy sent back to Stalin courtesy Churchill.......etc etc.....French fought bravely against invaders and held rear guard during Dunkirk evacuation (ps all French forces perished holding that line)

You don't need to 'Guest' - I cannot argue with a single word you say. Bravo - my comments were a bit 'tongue in cheek', and not intended to offend anyone. Well said.

The French managed to keep their secret weapon out of German hands for the entire war - the prototypes of the 2CV!

During that time, all the Germans could come up with was the VW Beetle.
